Brki.au, Nov. 10.—Emperor William
was the object of all attempted outrage
today, which, however, failed.
As he was driving iii an open carriage
to the Cuirassier barracks, accompanied
by the hereditary prince of Saxo-Meniu- I
gen, a woman in the crowd hurled at !
ax at the carriage.
Thu rapidity with which the vehicle
was passing saved the occupants. Tile |
ax. or hatchet, fell just behind tho car
riage. The woman was immediately
arrested.
Tho missile it developed later was a
short hand-chopper.
Tho woman is believed to be insane.
The woman’s name is Selma Schuapke.
She occupied a place in the front rank
of tho spectators, on the sido furthest
from tho emperor. The hatchet, it ap
pears, struck tho carriage. A crowd of
people who witnessed the act said tho
eftrnged crew threw themselves on his
majesty’s assailant, but the prompt in
tervention of tho police saved the
woman from injury.

ILLNESS OF CZAR OF RUSSIA
It 1b Stated lie It Ouly SufTerluff From
u Mild Cate of Influenzu.
Yalta, Russia, Nor. 10.—Persona
about the court say of tho czar’s illness
that it was merely a mild case of influ
enza, caught from his well known care
lessness in sitting about rooms with tho
window’s wide open.
On the other hand it is remarked that
tho Ruftsian ambassador to Turkey, M.
Zinorieg, who came from Constantino
ple, has been waiting for ten days with
QUt obtaining the audience for which ho
was specially summoned, and also that
the czar has been much worried and
anxious at first over Chinese matter!
and second over the illness of tho czar
ina. Although tho latter is from na
tural causes, yet it is rather worse than
normal.
The result is that the czar passes all
the timo with her, and is scarcely seen
at all, even by his family.
