The bazar was given over to the ba
bies yesterday a fternoon and for an
boar tboeo infantilo prodigies, their
doting mammas, anzions nnrses and
distracted judges held high carnival
there.
AH the pretty babies in town were
not there, bat something less than a
hundred of the finest came to the show
and made Rome howl. It wonldreqnire
the wisdom of Solomon and the cour
age of Dewey or Caesar to desoribe
their finepoints, and ye scribe possess'
ing neither—
Wet), perhaps the least said the bet'
ter from a saloty standpoint.
Dot the babies were up for prizes and
three drnmmers, strangers within onr
gates, were called upon to pass on
their fine points. Cheoking their bag'
gage, and with magnificent courage
and plenty of life insurance in case of
errors made, they boldly stepped into
the ring.
Selling goods to a miser was a picnie
in comparison to the job had
unwittingly undertaken.
Two olasses of prizes were offered to
the prettiest and handsomest babies
over one year of age, and also the pret
tiest and handsomest nnder one year,
making a total of four prizes given.
After surveying the improvised nur
sery with its eqaalls, and probably an
ticipating a “squall” within the ranks
of possibly disappointed mammas, one
of the judges looked fervently towards
heaven and then at the ground ontside,
mentally calculating. But he didn'
jump the game.
They then looked the babies over
carefully and announced a verdiet.
Yonng Henry Lnmpkin and young
Mr. Bragg were given the prizes for
the prettiest and handsomest baby
respectively nnder one year of age,
while little Miss Newell and Miss
Hooks, the latter-the daughter of Mr,
W, W. Hooks, were awarded similar
prizes for babies over one year of age.
The .two little kings and two tiny
tneens were indeed among the finest
in this human deck, and the three Sol'
omons who made the award of prizes
were congratulated upon their conr
age and wisdom.

A SUDDEN DEATH AT SUMTER.
Prominent Young Man Succumbs to
Fever.
Mr. James Webb, one of the best
known vonng men in Sumter county,
died of homorrhagio fever Monday
morning at the home of his father, Mr.
Thomas O. Webb, several miles south
of Americas. Mr. Webb bad been ill
for a week, bat it was hoped that bis
case had taken a tarn for the better.
Monday morning he grew rapidly
worse and the end eame in a few hoars.
The deceased was about twenty-three
years of age, and bis untimely taking
away is greatly deplored.
Tenderness or aching in the small of
the back is a serioas symptom. Tho
kidneys are suffering. Take Prickly
Ash Bitters at once. It is a reliable
kidney remedy and system regulator
and will eure the tronble before it de
velops its dangerous stage. Dr. E. J.

BOUGHT MiLL AND PLANTATION.
Another Sale of Country Realty Yes
terday-
Mr. L. A. Thomas purchased yes
terday the Davison mill and 200 acres
of farm laDd adjoining, paying fi,& )
therefor. The mill property will be
oveibanlcdtnd very much improved.
Tbe property lies some ten or twelve
miles from Americas and was owned
by heirs of the late Mrs. P. V, Wesson.
Today the “battle of ballots" will be
fought to a finish at the polls, and the
democratic voters will tbas determine
tbe selection of mayor, three aldermen
and elerk for the next two years.
For weeks past the campaign has
been warmly waged, and interest now
is at highest tension. Eleven good
citizens have offered for positions of
honor and trast in tbe administration
of affairs municipal, and it is to be re
gretted that there is not room for all
these aspirants.
The high position of mayor is to fill
ed for the fall term of two yeare, while
three members of the council and a oity
olerk and treasurer are likewise to be
chosen for a like term of years.
For the ofiice of mayor there are three
entries, Messrs. John B. Felder, W,
F. Clarko and W. P. Wallis. AH aro
well known, upright and honorable
men, and whoever may be honored by
the democratic voters today the inter
ests of Americas are safeguarded and
the people satisfied.
They have each made an aotive and
aggressive campaign and are equally
confident that sacoess will be theirs at
at the polls.
Next in interest comes the seven
sided aldermanio contest, and the man
who can prediot the result in this race
is entitled to the Presidency or any
other offico he may desire.
The entries hero are Messrs. W, E.
Brown, G. W. Glover, A. T. Oliver,
Lynn Fort, J. E. Cameron, E. A. Lock
ett and B. H. Mayo. That’s tho list-
seven of ’em—and the yoter who can
not pick three good men from this
number would indeed be hard to please.
Good men they aro.
Bat only three can be chosen of the
seven who were “called.”
City Clerk Davis has the only real
snap, and being the only pebble on
that beaoh is sure to go in. He well
deservos annanimons vote.
The polls will be opened at 9 o’clock
and closed at 4 p. m. Justice Graham
will preside, with Mossrs. W. D.
Haynes, F. A. Hooper and J. T. Cot-
hoy as managers, and Messrs, E. A.
Nisbot, E. L. Gnerry and E. J. Mo
Math as clerks.
Now go to the polls and help tho
voters pick the wianers in this race.
