Mr. Benjamin M. Wheeler died at
his borne in Amerious on Sunday night
after a brief illness, some heart trouble
being the immediate eanse of his de
mise though he had not been very well
for some time. Everyone in Americas
and Snmter county knew Mr. Wheeler,
who esjoyed the distinction of having
been the first white child born in Snm-

and all of his three-soore and ten years
were spent here. He had known
Americas since the first log hat was

ABOUT THE DEPOTS. E
In Instance In Which Figures Do
Not Agree.
According to the directory of Ameri
cue, mat issued, this city has a popula
tion of 8,202. That number of names
appear ia the directory, and the street
address of each resident appears oppo
site of his or her name. If they are
not here the fact could easily be as
certained.
Many citizens bave all along believed
that the population of Americas ex
ceeded 8 000, and the directory figures
substantiate this belief.
Mr. H. Wetterotb, supervisor of the
late census, does not think this count
correct, in that it does not correspond
with the report of the three (numera
tors who took the Federal census, and
one of whom afterwards made a can
vass of the eotire city securing names
for the directory.
The Times-Recorder does not pre
tend to say whieb count is correct.
According to figures furnished ns by
Mr, Wetterotb, the actual ennmeration
for Americas was 7,074. By wards the
count ran: First wsrd 1,035; second
1,423; third-3,530; fourth 1,087, This
was an increase of 1.290 over the offi
cial count of the census of 1890.
The actual ennmeration of this mil
itia district, the 789tb, according to the
recent Federal census, was 10,552
against 8,905 in 1890, a gain of 1,587 in
popnlation.
