THIRTEEN FAILURES
REPORTED IN LONDON
:v Several Big Firms Are Forced
to the Wall.
BIG SENSATION ON ’CHANGE
Suspension of the London and Globe
Finance Corporation Is Followed By
the Announcement of the Other
Fullnres—Stock Market ATt-cted.
London, Deo. 29.—The Loudon and
Globe Finance corporation, limited, has
suspended payment. When the brokers
yesterday delivered stock purchased on
Recount of tl.e London and Globe asked
•ir payment they received checks which
* 3j» dishonored. Tho suspension of
London and Globo Finance corpo-
\ hasbocu followed today by the
incement on the Stock Exchange
ie failure of 12 firms as follows:
gard 4fAles-Pixloy,Gft.-le&Driver,
..uuuglos, Jri7& Oo., Corufot Bros, F. A.
Cohen, Blockey & Biokingham, Gunn
& Aubrey, Richards & Slopor f> Barno”
& Aubrey, Richards & Slopor, Barney
Smith, F. C." Watts & Co,. Flower &
Co., F. Bouilly & Co.
Tho first named is * big firm with
foreign connections. It is feared a num
ber of small jobbers will be adected.
While the dieffiulties of the flrnu
closely connected with tho London and
Globe divisoti were largely discounted
the repeated fall of the hammer this
morning caused a great sensation. It
is feared tho full list of failures is not
, yet known.
Some trouble was disclosed on tho
Orient stock exchange yesterday in tho
West Australian markot, resulting in a
considerable fall in the shares of the
London and Globe fiuanco corporation,
limited; and LoRoi Mining company,
limited. Seven firms had' chocks re
turned by the clearing house. This does
not imply failure, however, as it is ex
pected that the usual period of grace al
lowed will enable the firms to meet their
engagements. •
The chairman of the London and
Globe Finance corporation, limited, is
the Marquis of Dufferin and Ava, the
former governor general of Canada and
British ambassador at Paris. The fail
ure of the concern of which he is the
bead adds one more sorrow to the clos- (
ing chapter of his life, for he is today
preparing to start for South Africa, in
company with Lady Dufferin, in conse
quence of the serious condition of his
son, Lord Frederick Temple Blackwood,
lieutenant in the Ninth lancers, who
was wounded Monday at Glenfontein.
It is scarcely a year ago sinco Lord Duf
ferin lost his eldest sou, tho Earl of
Ava, who died at Ladysmith. He is
now encompassed by family grief to
which are added these serious financial
troubles.
Lord Dufferin's fellow directors are
Whitaker Wright, who is well kuown
in connection with many companies;
Lieutenant General tho Hon. Somerset
Gough'Cnlthorpe. who has been colonel-
in-chicf of the Fifth Dragoon guards
since 1802, and Lord Polham-Clinton,
master of tho queen’s household and a
son of the former Duke of Newcastle.
'Lord Dufferin holds 5,000 shares of tho
London and Globe.
The thirteenth fnilurc of stock brokers
was announced before the close of tho
exchange. It was that of Bartholomew

Failures Have a Serious Influence
tile Market.
* London, Dec. 09.---Almost tho whole
interest on the Stock Exchange today
centered in the western Australian mar
ket, the condition of which sympathet-
I ically affected the others. AH the shares
qf the London and Globe group toppled,
thpeciallv Lake Views and La Roi No.
2. The shares of the latter were yester
day quoted at 25, but today they are un
saleable at 4. The Loudon and Globo is
also universally involved in the British
colouial market.
The situation is not cleared up, as the
rumors of arrangements to assist the
,, London and Globe ore uot credited iu
well informed circles. There is the
greatest indignation against Whitaker
Wright, who is the fountain head of the
concern, and others of the London and
Globe group. There was some recovery
in Lake Views siuco last evening.
