Relates the Ilazlng of Cudets MucAr-

I’uutsh the Offender.—Authorities
Tried to Dreuk Up the Practice.
West Point, N. Y., Deo. »>.—Lien-
tenant Colonel Otto Hein,. superintend
ent at the United States Military Acad^
cmy, was the first witness called tfl the
stand today. Colonel Hein produced tho
superintendent’s sick reports, which
showed that Cadet Booz had only re
ported sick once while he was at the
academy. He was excused on that occa
sion from one drill, as ho was suffering
from an acute attack of diarrhoea. The
records made it clear that Booz had
never been absent from breakfast, din
ner or supper while he was a cadet at
West Point.
An extract from tho records was pre
sented which showed Cadet Booz had
availed himself of the Saturday evening
privileges of going anywhere within tho
reservation on Saturday Aug. 0, the day
of the Baoz-Keller fight. Booz reported
his going away at 1:58 o’clock and his
returning-at 3:18 o’clock in the after
noon., In reply to General Clous the
witness said that in tho summer of
1899, through anonymous letters, the
brutal hazing of MncArtbur and Has
kell came to tho knowledge of the acad
emy otlicials. An immediate investiga
tion was orderod, but no facts could bo
elicited from Any of those examined,
among whom were MacArthnr and Has
kell. .The regulations prohibiting haz
ing provided puishineut for bazars and
hazed alike.
In telling of the agreement made by
the fourthclass men in 1899, among
whom were Cadets MacArthnr and
Grant, not to submit to hazing, Colonel
Hein said:
“I called the class together and ex
plained the rules and regulations of pro
hibiting hazing. I told them if they
would agree not to submit to hazing
and promise not to haze any one them
selves they would rid tho academy of a
foul blot on its reputation. Soon after
ward they applied to me to be released
from this agreement, but I refused.
‘•I also heard,” continued the witness,
"that candidates preparing at Highlaud
Falls were being hazed, and I made an
investigation, the outcome of which was
the severe punishment of the gnilty
cadets.”
The remainder of tho commandant’s
testimony was mainly an explanation of
the actions of the authorities and meas
ures taken by them to suppress hazing
at the acadomy. The punishments were
increased and the number of cadets
found guilty of violations of regulations
in 1899 were greatly in excess of the
previous year.

Louisville, Dec. 29.—W. W. Parrish,
proprietor of the Phenix hotel, was
tried, convicted and expelled from Livo
Oak camp No. 5, Woodmen of tho World,
in Louisville last Wednesday night on
the charge of conduct unbecoming a
brother.
Sylvester Breeden, tho prosecuting
witness, said that Parrish had insured
his life for $8,000 and subsequently had
caused him to become a confirmed ine
briate by keeping him supplied with in
toxicants. He also testified that Parrish
kept him in a room at the hotel and kept
a loaded pistol lying by, inviting him
to commit saicido when ho should grow
weary of life.
Breeden said that if some of tho lodgo
members had not discovered him and
taken cognizance of his condition his
death would certainly have resulted
from the life he was leading.

United States and South America, por-

Washington, Dec. 29.—The United
States seems likely to stand at the head
of the world's list of exporting nations
in the year 1900. One by one the groat
nations have fallen behiud iu the race
for this distinction until during the
past five years only the United Kingdom
and the United States could be consid

of being the world’s greatest exporter of
articles of home production. •
