benehtted, too.
The country mnle came to town in

his new suit of chains and collars by
the mule haberdasher, preparatory for
the year’s work.

a new day, a new month, a new year

Abbeville is going to have a carnival,
and the Amorions Light Infantry has
been invited to come next Friday and
contest for a prize with other military
companies expected.
E. A. Nisbet, who is assistant city
clerk and treasurer, will hold down the
duties of that position satisfactorily,
having had large experience heretofore
in such clerical work.
The egg market was smashed yester
day when holders of the hen frnit in
the country brought in a bountiful
supply. It broke the “corner” and
ptices dropped to ten cents.
Carpenters took down yesterday all
the carnival pavilions remaining in the
streets, and Bosco, theooochee ooocheo,
the big snake and the wild man are
only nightmares of the past.
It is said that there is considerable
smallpox in the vicinity of Colnmbns,
but as everyone in Americns was
vaccinated a year-ago people here will
feel but little apprehension.
The scarcity of game in the it cal
marke', tepeoially bird*, is unite no
ticeable. It is the rarest thing that
one sees a string of partridges or birds
of auv kind offered for sale here.
An old maid residing on Lee street
takes more exercise daily since kidnap
ing has become popular. If some one
will run away with her they get the
reward and keep the property,

country negro and a Contral railroad
freight train met on the Cotton ave
nue crossing here yesterday. The
train escaped without any damage,
Mr. J. 0 Ronoy, who for several
years haa traveled for the Americus
Grocery Co. has severed his connec
tion therewith and may enguge in busi
ness in this city, where he resides.
The plant of the Virginia-Carolina
Chemical Co. in Americns is now run
ning on fall time and turningoet the
Lest grades of fertilizer. It is one < f
the city’s most important industries.
Our neighbor, Monteznma, imposes
special license tax of $100 per day
upon each cockpit “where bat one
tight a day is to lake place.” We are
fearful for our friends over the Flint.
M". James Livingston, who went

Years ago, returned here yesterday
upon a visit to relatives. This is his
first visit here in more than three de
cades.
Americas is anxioas to be on the
proposed Brunswick k Birmingham
Railway, and onr citizens will pnt
forth every effort to induce its build
ing in this direction.
Pursuant to the call of Mayor Fel
der, quite a number of representative
citizens met at the council chamber
yesterday morning for the purpose of
discussing ways and means of secur
ing this new enterprise. It was well
attended by prominent business and
professional men.
Mr. L. G. Council, one of our lead
ing bankers and cotton factors, was
invited to preside as chairman.
Mayor Felder stated the object of
the meeting and spoke strongly of the
advantages of Americus, both from a
commercial and geographical stand
point, and expressed the belief that
the proposed new company wonla give
this dne consideration in mapping out
its route.
Americns is cqui-distant from Bruns
wick and Birmingham, and would be
divisional headquarters. Shops would
probably be located here, and benefit
derived therefrom.
Mr. Thornton Wheatley and others
spoke upon the same line.
The seeretary read a letter from a
prominent oitizen of Buena Vista, pro
posing co-operation in securing this
projeot, and likewiso a letter from
President Maohen to Judge Bull, of
Talbotton, setting forth the purposes
of his company and the desire for
heartv friendly aid.
A free right of way, a few crossties
and general good will, Col. Maohen
said, would be worth more now than
would the plaetng of a thousand of the
bonds at a later date.
Upon motion, a committee of seven,
consisting of Chairman L. G. Coun
cil, Mayor Felder, Crawford Wheat-
ley, J. W. Fnrlow, Thomas Barroid,
Judge Fort and James J. Hanesley,
was appointed with plenary power to
take snob action in the premises as
was deemed advisable.
This committee will meet at the
Planters Bank at 8:30 o’clock thiB
morning.

Mr. J. H. Evans is to succeed Mr.
Frank McGee as master mechanic of
the Fourth Division of the Seaboard
System, and in that capacity will have
oharge of the
Americus.
The announcement of Mr. EvauB
appointment will give pleasare to^ his
numerous friends in this city. Until
three months ago he was general fore
man of the Amerions shops but was
transferred to Montgomery and put in
charge of aflaire at that end of theline.
Mr. Evans came over yesterday
morning to assume his new duties.
He is rated one of the best machin
ists in the state and will prove a wor
thy successor to Frank McGee. Like
the latter he is universally esteemed.
It is not yet known what other
changes wtll take place here, though
it is quite probable that some of the
clerical force will ask permission to go
to Portsmouth with Mr, MoGee, who
will have a large clerical force there.
This is one of the many evidences of
his popularity among his eo-workers.
As told in yesterday’s Times-Re-
corder, Mr. McGee is promoted to the
position of general superintendent of
motive power of the entiro Seaboard
Air Line System at a salary of $4,200
per annum. His hundreds of friends
heartily congratulate him upon his de
served good fortune.
Mr. Ad J. Poole, of Americns, a com
petent engineer and maohinist, it is
said, will sucoeed Mr. Evans as gen
eral foreman for the Seaboard at Mont
gomery.

larged.
Mr. Richard F. Sams, superinten
dent of plants of the Virginia-Oaro-
lina Chemical Co in Georgia, spent
yesterday in Amerions. Mr. Sams
a former resident of this oity and has
many friends litre. He says that it
certainly’is the intention of his company
to rebuild the destroyed acid chambers
at its plant here and mako other exten
sive improvements ns well. This, Mr.
Bams says, will be done in the Spring,
when the rash of business is over.
The plant here, now in charge of Snpt.
Rov McKenzie, is being operated to
its capacity and will manufacture
10,000 tons fertilizer this season. Whou
the plant is overhauled in the Spring
and the aoid obambers restored the ca
pacity will be increased to 15.000 tons
annually.

Davis, of Weston, will be united in
marriage. Numerous friends of the
brido and groom will witness the nup
tials and extend heartiest congratula
tions. Miss MoLendon is a cultured
and charming voung lady and the cen
tre of an admiring circle of friends.
Dr. Davis is a well known physician
of his town, where he takes his pretty
bride this afternoon.
Board Meets For the First Time This
Year.
The board of county commissioners
met Monday morning, this being the
first regular session of the new year.
Mr. M L. Laokey was again eleoted
road overseer, with Foreman Morris
again in that position. Mr. J. E. Sul
livan was eleoted elook keeper for the
year. The usnal batch of bills were
paid and routine matters passed upon

Mr. Frank McGee, for several years
master mechanio of the Seaboard Rail
way and in charge of the company’s
extensive shops here, is to be trans
ferred to Portsmouth shortly.
He has been made general tuperin-
tendent of motive power for the entire
system.
Mr. McGee was summoned to Ports
mouth two days ago, and the an
nouncement of his promotion was Wheatley & Ansley,
made yesterday at the company ’« shops J
here, and is aathentio, beyond doabt.
It is not yet known who will suc
ceed Snpt. McGee as master mechanic
of this, the Fonrth division of the Sea
board System.
Mr. McGee is a most effloient rail
road man, having at one time occu
pied a similar position with the Cen
tral of Georgia before coming to
Americas with the Georgia k Ala
bama.
While congratulating him upon his
deserved promotion. Americus will
regret to lose Mr, McGee and excel
lent family.
