previous,
For indeed a sainted one bad gone
to receive her reward on high.
A concourse of sorrowing friends
paid this final tribute of respect to one
whom they loved so well iu life and
the services, both at the home and at
the cemetery, were most impressive.
Mrs. Slsppey was 04 years of age, and
in her brief illness exemplified the
beautiful life of the true Christian,
For fifty years she had been a consist
ent member of the Methodist church
and had ever served her Master.
She was a daughter of Capt, W. B.
Stewart, once one of Sumter's promi
nent citizens. Forty-four years ago
she blended her life with that of Mr.
11. H. Slappey,‘.and the union was a
happy one. He, with three sons and
two daughters are left to revere her
precious memory.
These are Messrs. Charles, William
and Thomas Slappey, and Misses Liz
zie and Callie, who, with the stricken
hnsband and father, have the tender-
est sympathy of many friends.

Resolutions For 1901.
jt jt jt,
I have resolved lo iucrease the volume of my business in every
department—save book-keeping—to sell more for caBh and less on
credit. To accomplish this end I shall charge only the very low
est possible margin of profit. .
My sales in 1900 exceeded any of onr previous annual achieve
ments. but the advent of today will find us going one better, for
1901. My New Year's wish to all is Peace, Plenty and .Pros
perity,

Another Warehouse Company to Be
Formed Here.
The Chambliss Warehouse Company
is the latest corporation proposed for
Americas, and is already a reality.
The ineorporators are Messrs. It. S.
Oliver, W. S. Roach, J. L. Johnson,
O. A. Chambliss and J, M. Johnson,
all prominent farmers and business
men of the city or county. They pro
pose to conduct a large warehouse and
supply business iu Americus at the
warehouse now occupied by J. L.
Chambliss & Co. The new corpora
tion will have a paid np capital stock
of 815,000, though backed by all the
money that may be needed in conduct
ing a large business. The application
for charter appears elsewhere in the
Times-Itecorder.
Millions Given Away.
It Is certainly gratifying to the pub
lic to know of one concern in the land
whoare not afraid to be generous
the needy aod suffering. Tbe proprie
tors of Dr. King’s New Discovery for
Consumption, Coughs and Cods, have
given away over ten million trial Dottles
of this great medicine; and h: ,o tbe sat
isfaction oJ knowing It has absolutely
cured thousands cf hopeless cases.
Asthma, Brono Itis, Hoarseness and all
diseases of the Throat, Chest and Lunea
a'e surely cured by it. Call on E. J.
Etdrldge, druggist, and get a free trial
bottle. Regular size 50c. and $1. Every
bottle guaranteed, or price refunded.
Only Three Have Complied With Law
So Far.
Americas merchants who eell alco
hoi, pistole, cigarettes and other dead
ly weapons are not registering in num
bers with the ordinary, ae required by
law. Judge Alien stated yesterday
that tbus far only one dealer in each of
the above destructive agencies bad
registered in his office, though there
are many others engaged in business
here. Probably a hundred barrels of
alcohol are now Bold in Americas an
nually "for scientific and mechanical
purposes” while stacks of cigarettes
are sold. This year tbe state license
to sell cigarettes has been raised to 310,
and as there is very little profit in the
business some of tbe former dealers
here may discontinue the sale. Be
sides the lines of business above
enumerated, all owners of pool and
billiard tables and street vendors of
“medicines” mast take oat a license.

DEATH OF WELL KNOWN LADY.
Mrs. Bettie Williams of Roney, Died
Wednesday.
Mrs. Bettie Williams died yesterday
morning at Roney, several miles west
of Americas, after an illnesB of some
length. The deceased was nearly
eighty years of age and the widow of
the late JndgeA. J. Williams once,
one of Sumter’s best known citizens.
Several sons and daughters survive
her. The funeral services will be held
at Roney this (Thursday) afternoon.
Red Hot From the Gun
Waa the ball that hit G. B. Steadman
of Newark, Mich., iu the Civil War. It
caused horrible uicers that no treatment
helped for 30 years. Then Buoklen’s
Arnloa Salvo cured bun. Cures cuts,
biulaes, burns, boils, felons, corns, skin
eruptions. Best pile cure on earth
25 cents a bo i. Cure guaranteed. Sold
by E. J. Eldridge, druggist.
BOUGHT A LARGE PLANTATION.
Jenkins Place m Fifteenth is Sold
Yesterday.
Mr. J. M. Johnson purchased yester-
dayfrom Mr. John T. Taylor the Jenk
ins plantation of 00o acres in the Fif
teenth district of Sumter aud lying
eight miles east of Americas. Mr.
Johnson is an extensive and success
ful farmer, owning already much val
uable land in Sumter besides the fine
place bonght yesterday.
AGAIN IT GOES TO TEN CENTS.
Cotton Market Was Quite Bullish
Yesterday.
Again it looks like the farmer, who
nervily held on to his cotton, wonld
get tbe coveted ten cents for it, and
that right soon.
The market took a considerable
stride upward yesterday.
January contracts touched ten cents
for tne first time since October lOtb,
last year, when the fearful stamp pat
the market down 149 points, or a cent
and a half.
Then it was tnat January dropped
from 10:18 down to 8:75, and froze ont
tbe bull element in the South to the
tune of millions.
Yesterday’s advance, therelore, was
the greatest in nearly three months.
In the Americus market the best cot
ton brought 9) to llj cents yesterday,
but it is only a question of short time
before it brings “even money” for
which onr farmers have held it.
IN OLDEN TIMES
People overlooked the importance of
permanently beneficial effects and were
satisfied with transient action; bntnow
that it i9 generally known that Syrrp
of Figs will permanently overcome
habitual constipation, well informed
people will not buy other laxatives,
which aet for a time, bat finally injure
the system. Boy tbe gennine, made
by the California Fig Syrnp Co.
A DIVIDEND TO STOCK HOLDERS
Bank of Southwestern Georgia Pays
Eight Per Cent.
At tbe annual meeting of directors
of tbe Bank of Southwestern Georgia
yesterday a cash dividend of 5 per cent
was deolared upon the oapital stock of
8100,000 for the business done in tbe
last six months. The July dividend was
3 per cent,or8 per eent for the pastyear.
This is indeed a most gratifying ex
hibit, aud reflects creditably npon the
financial ability of tbe bank’s excellent
corps of officers. The annual meeting
of stockholders of this solid old financi
al institntion will be held at 10 o'clock
this morning.
