Dr. Williams of Columbus Re
turns From Islands.
TALKS OF III3 ASSOCIATES
General Loiig&lreet** Son Promoted to
u Captaincy ami Now In Command
of a Garrison-Captain Wllcoxln of
Atlanta a Itcglmrntal Adjutant.|
CoU'MHi's, Ga., .Jan. 19.—Dr. Alliu
W. Williams, ju.>t home from the Phil
ippines, talks interestingly of the Geor
gia boys there. Several important posi
tions are filled by well known young
Georgians. Dr. Williams himself occu
pied several positions of trust and re
sponsibility while in the islands, the
last of which was executive officer of
the transport Pennsylvania.
Captain Louis F. Garrard, a sou of
Hon. L. F. Garrard of Columbus, is
now stationed at Yigau, in northern
Luzon, in the capacity of captain and
assistant quartermaster of volunteers.
He is at tin* head of his department in
that district.
Charles O. Keene, another Columbus
boy iu the far east, will soon be ap
pointed to a clerkship in the adjutant
general’s department. It will be quite
a promotion.
Van Mooty of Columbus is stationed
at Catbalogau, on the.island of Samar.
Lieutenant Stanford Moses of the
navy now occupies tb*j responsible posi
tion of executive officer of the flagship
Newark.
Lieutenant Jitn Kimbrough of Griffin
is at Calbayoc, ou the island of Samar.
Dr. Williamson dined with him while
on his cruise with the Pennsylvania.
While he was at Oalbavoc a typhoon ut
most completely demolished the town.
Th6 wind blew at the rate of 100 miles
pe> hour. '• *
Captain James Longstreet of Gaines
ville, a son of General James Loug-
street, is in command of a garrison on
the island of Romblom. He is one of
the most efficient officers of the Twenty-
ninth regiment, and is highly spoken of
by Colonel Harden. He was recently
promoted from lieutenant to captain.
Lieutenant Walker K. Wheatley of
Americus is as jovial and happy as ever.
He is now commissary at Catbalogan,
and will probably be promoted to a cap
taincy soon.
Captain Keuan of Macon has com
pletely recovered from his wound and
is on duty at Catbalogan.
Captain Wilooxson of Atlanta holds a
responsible position as adjutant of the
Twenty-ninth infantry, with headquar
ters at Catbalogan.
Catbalogan is a rather oddly situated
town. It is three-quarters of a mile
long and about, one-third of a mile wide
and is surrounded on all sides by moun
tains 2,500 and 3,000 feet high. The in
surgents occupy the mountains and pep
per the troops constantly. The Ameri
can force is too small to establish out
posts ou the mountain, and the situn
tion is thus very disagreeable. The Fil
ipinos are such poor marksmen that so
far the troops have escaped casualties,
although the houses are frequently
■truck by bullets. Only one death, that
of a native child, has resulted from the
daily fire of the insurgents, rather re
markable tq state.
“BRACING" AT WEST POINT
Cadets Made to Stand On Their Heads,
Sin*, Etc.
West Point, N, Y.,' Jan. 10.—'The
committee appointed by tlib house of
representatives to investigate the sub
ject of hazing at the Military academy
expects to got through with the taking
of testimony by midnight tonight, but
it is more than likely tlmt the session
mav be belli next Monday, as several
witnesses have yet to be examined.. The
congressmen are anxious to get away
lrcrn West Point, for business reasons,
mid thev will do their utmost to finish
““ so tlmt thov can return to Wash
ington tomorrow.
The lir.se witness examined this morn
ing was Cadet P.unker of Massachu
setts, who is n member of the present
third class. Last night some of the
plebes told tho committee that Bunker
had hazed them and given themtobasco
sauce during the encampmentjiytt sum-
“cadet Dillon said lie was compelled
t>v Banker to swallow from a half to a
leas poo u tul of the sauce, given him iu
a camp spoon. .
Bunker dented having ever given
more than 15 drops of snu to a cadet,
although admitting that lie had taken
part in the hazing of some pieties, and
when Judge Smith confronted him with
Dillon’s testimony the witness said he
did not recollect ever haring given such
a large nuantity to Dillon or auv other
^Banker, who said he weighed about
300 pounds and measured 5 feet 11
inches, only remembered having hazed
iwo men,' who were his ennal in
physique. The other plebes whom lie
hazed were all men. He had never en
gaged in lights, either ,a* ^principal or
assistant. Ills hazing was limited to
bracing, making men sing ont their
wash list to popular airs, ride broom
sticks, stand on their Wads and charge
x sparrows with fixed bayonets.
