THE 4MER1CUS WEEKLY TIMKS--RECORDER: FRIDAY, JANUARY 25, 1901.
THREE THOUSAND
TAX EXECUTIONS.
Will Be Issued Against Defaulters In
Sumter.
NEW COMPANY HAD A MEETING.
COLLECTOR IS GETTING READY.
To Proceed Against Those Who Re
fused to Pay Their Dues Hundred
Owe Poll Tax Only But It Swells
the List All the Same.
Retween 2,000 and 3,000 taxpayers
of Sumter county failed to pay their
dues to the state and county, and Tax
Collector Dunn is preparing to issue
tifas against this army of delinquents
to effect a settlement.
Already more than a thousand tifas
have been written ont, and the work is
not half completed.
Last year Collector Dunn issued
about 2,000 tifas againt delinquents,
and he stated yesterday that the num
ber this year would, in all probability,
be as large, or larger.
While hundreds of the executions to
be issued are for considerable amounts
the, great bulk are for poll tax or
amounts equally small. But huudrods
of them will yeild nothing, as poll tax “5“^ 8eryed throngh the SpaniBh ,
is rather hard to collect.
Collector Dunn docs not know the
exact number of exectutions to bo
issued or the amount of money repre
sented theroin, bnt it will be consider
able. If all was collected the tax rate
might be reduced considerably.
But if 2,000 or 3,COO citizens refuse
to pay, tho rate mnBt remain the same.
Would be Soldier Boys Attended In
Force.
A meeting of tho young men inter
ested in the organization of another
military company lu Americus was
held at city hall last night, and was
largely attended by the enthusiastic
young fellows who would wear the
uniform of Undo .Sam. .
Organization was effected and com
missioned ollicers elected.
E. A. Nisbet was elected captain; S.
E. Warlick first lieutenant and James
B, Vickers second lieutenant. The
roster of tho new company contains 05
names already.
The greatest enthusiasm prerailed,
and in tho event of acceptance by tho
state the new company will be one of
the yery best in the volunteer service.
The best young men of the city are
among the rank and file, and will take
a pride In their company.
The “Sumter Light Guards” is the
namo of the new company.
The name is not new. Forty years
ago another gallant band made that
name famous and embazoned it upon
tho history of the old South from
Americus to Appomattox.
And tho new company will do credit
to the name as well. Captain Nisbet
and Lieutenants Warlick and Vickers
oflicers of experience. Captain

Colors

of the Old Company
Wanted.
The new military company organized
here two nights ago, taking tho honor
ed name of the Snmtor Light Gnards,
will not want for colors when formally
mustered into service. The glorious
battle flag of the old company, the
Light Guards of the Civil War, is still
a treasured relio here, while the second
company bearing that name, and wbieb
passed ont of existence when the Amer
icas Light Infantry was organized
twenty years ago, likewise had a beau
tifnl stand of oolors. Captain Nisbet’a
now company would bo very glad to
eocnre this latter flog, anyway, after
the state accepts his command.

Careless Handling Tof the Gun Caused

A negro was shot in the head with a
rifle ball while ont hunting near Mag

fact that the wound was not inflicted at

more serious. Three or four boys
were our with the gun, and it is said

HOW TO GAIN FLESH
Persons have been known to
gain a pound a day by taking
an ounce of Scott’s emulsion.
It is strange, but it often
happens.
Somehow the ounce pro
duces the pound; it seems to
start the digestive machinery
going properly, so that the
patient is able to digest and
absorb his ordinary food, which
he could not do before, and
that is the way the gain is made.
A certain amount of flesh is
necessary for health; if you
have not got it you can get it
by taking Scott’s Emulsion.
You will find it just as use
ful in summer as in winter, and
if you are thriving upon it don’t
stop because the weather is
warm.

In the larger cities of the South the
tribote paid the memory of Lee on
Saturday may have been attended
with more military pomp and ceremo
ny, but nowhere was it more heartfelt
and sincere, or more impressive, than
that paid by Americus.
For nowhere in the South Is the
memory of the Confederacy and the
chieftain of her once powerful armies
more revered.
And it waa proper, then, on such oc
casion, that hundreds of those who
knew and loved the old South, the
South that followed Lee from Manas
sas to Appomattox, should thus honor
his memory.
The exorcises at the opera house
were appropriate and beautiful,
A detachment of the Americus Light
Infantry acted as an escort to Camp

half hundred of tho old soldiers had
seats npon the stage.
Tho Laities Memorial Association,

eracy. and members of Jack Felder
Camp, Sons of Veterans occupied seats
reserved for them, while a largo as
semblage of citizens listened to the
fineaddress delivered by Judge J. B,
Pilsbury.
The exercises were opened with
prayer by Rev. LeEoy G. Hondcrsou,
pastor of the Presbyterian chnrcli.

“That Duncan's store sells “warm”

stack of fine blankets piled np at the
front door. The whole lot of twenty
pairs were slightly singed, and it is
not an advertisement to state here that
they will be sold at half price.

In dealing with events eonnected
with the Civil War Judge Pilsbury is
in his element, and on this occasion
more than snstained his reputation as
a forceful narrator of events connected
with that period of our history. And
he was at hiB beet on this oocasion.
Incidents in the life of the great
commander were related, while a re
cital of his brilliant exploits upon the
battlefields of Virginia brought rouuds
of applause from the audience.
For nearly an hour the speaker held
the wrapt attention of hie hearers. He
paid tribate not only to Lee and the
tattered heroes who helped to make
him great, bnt to the women of the
Confederaov, heroines all, who suffer
ed and endured for their stricken conn
try.
It wbb a memorial occasion long to
be remembered m Americas.
A verv pleasing feature was the mu
sic, the entire assemblage joining in
the rendition of The Bonny Bine Flag;
Maryland uy Maryland, and that
grandest of all productions “Dixie”
the mere announcement of which was
received with applanse.
After this Rev* R- L. Bivins pro
nounced the benediction and Chair-
man J. L. Adderton announced the
memorial exercises at an end.

The’LSeaboard’s pavtrain reached
Americus yesterday on its monthly
round,tand something like 325,000 or
830,000 was paid to employes here.

But auother good feature was that
no employes in the mechanical depart

Some fear existed yesterday that the
