fair did not take place. It was be
litved in police circles that something
sensational would trauspire. aud thut
the mystery, or at least one feature
would be cleared up.
The detectives say now that the de
velopment is off, which probably
meaDS that the clew they were on aud
which promised so much has tuined
out to bo worthless.
One of the clews worked upon was
the story told by a small white boy
living near the fedoral.prison. The boy
stated that he saw a white man ana a
negro get oil a car the night C. II.
Frazer delivered tho $501 as a ransom,
and that the white man held a pistol in
hand.
It developed that tho white man was
Frazer himself, and tho negro .was
only an ordinary passenger who lived
in the country.
It is said that eome of the money
Frazer gave op was marked, but if
this was bo it amounted to nothing, os
tho gold has never been heard from.
The officers have ceased to advance
theories, and it now looks as if they
had decided to abandon the caso.
The fact that tho reward of $5C0 of
fered by Captain N. H. Frazez hoB not
been withdrawn is a matter of consider
able interest. In spite of the fact that
the family has alroady given up 8500
for Bass Frazer, the distracted parents
still announce that the money origi
nally offered is on deposit in the Mer
chants and Farmers’ bank of Union
Springs, Ala.

Mrs. Rebecca Bass, an aged aud es
timable woman, passed away yester
day at her home here after an illness of
several weeks, resulting from paraly
sis. The deceased was seventy years
of age, the widow of the late Rice Bssb,
and was widely known throughout

The funeral will take place at 3 p. m.

FIRST FIRE IN A YEAR'S TIME.
Distance and Delay Caused First
Fire Loss.
The Gnerry fire yesterday was the
first loss in Americas in more than a
year-that is, where the building en
dangered was not saved with only
slight damage. List year d record for
the department was a magnificent one,
the total loss by fire in Americas dur
ing the entire year being less than six
hundred dollars. Bat for the long dis
tance and delay in getting tho alarm
yesterday the Guerry house would have
been saved as well.
Crowds Greeted It and Sung Loud

ANOTHER PLANT IS PROBABLE.
Parties Here May Build a Guano Fac
tory.
It is reported upon good authority
that parties iu Americus contemplate
establishing a large fertilizer plant
here at an early dato. Even now. ii is
said, eucli a movement is well under
way. and actual work npon the build
ings may begin early in tho spring.
Parlies formerly engaged in the ninnu-
fac'uro of commercial fertilizers have
interested local capitalists in tbo pro
posed enterprise, and tbo building of
a large aud well equipped factory is
pretty well regarded as au assured
fact. Americus would hail tbo build

plant—if not a cotton factory, why not
another gaano plant.
A FORTUNE IN GEORGIA MULES.
Farmers Spending Vast Amount For
Them.
The farmers about Americus have
probably invested a hundred thousand
dollars in mules this year, or a sum
nearly approaobing that fignre, while
other towns in this part of the state re
port enormous sales as well. Dawson
has received and disposed of thirty-
threo carloads of mules already, and
the “season” is just at its height
Averaging twenty-five mules to the
car the number sold would be 3.25, aud
at 8110 per head the amount paid would
bo $115,500. Millions of Georgia
money will go for males this year.
18 CAPTURED NEAR AMERICUS.
And Carried to Arkansas for Wife
Murder.
TheBheriffof Monticelio, Ark , was
in Americas yesterday en route back
to that state with David Loyd, au aged
negro, charged with wife murder. The
crime of which Loyd stands charged
was committed Christmas, the old ne
gro immediately fleeing to Georgia for
safety. Ho stopped at Leesburg, and
a letter written to a relative at home
betrayed his whereabouts. Lovd is
about sixty years of age and, it is said,
does not douytbe killing. The sheriff'
had him securely ehainod, hand and
feet.
BABY’S BUSINESS
A healthy baby is comfort

to grow.
Aside from acute diseases,
his food is the cause of most
of his troubles. But Scott’s

lie isn’t sick; only a little
hitch, somewhere, in his ma

growth.
It is a great thing to do, for
a baby, to help him over a hitch
with mere food—the emulsion
is food that has the tact to get
there.
The tact to get there is med
icine.

which is held to be a misdemeanor. The
use of the drug has rapidly spread until
