New York, Jan. 25.—A World dis
patch from Cowes says:
Qtieeu Victoria’s will was opened and
examined yesterday by the duly consti
tuted authorities. Nothing will ever
made public officially as to tho
amouut of her fortune. It is generally
supposed that this preliminary inspec
tion was made in order to follow exactly
her majesty’s directions in regard to
her fuueral. It is known that the queen
made a will early in her reign, which
was repeatedly altered and added to as
children and grandchildren were born
and as her estates rapidly advanced in
value. This proceeded uutil 18Utf, when
her majesty decided to have an entirely
new document drawn, and with great
personal care this >vas accomplished.
Provisions of Will.
Those in a position to make any sort
of a guess as to the provisions ,of the
will declare that the Princess Beatrice,
widow of Prince Henry of Batten burg,
will be the principal beneficiary. Sbe
is the governor of the Isle of Wight and
will probably inherit Osborne House
and the whole estate surrounding it.
Then the Duke of Connaught and his
sons, who have been great favorites
with Queen Victoria, will receive a
large portion of the fortune. The duke
will probably become the owner of Bal
moral and the Scottish property.
The queen's second duughter. Princess
Christiau of Schleswig Holstein, is not
rich, and it is expected she and her four
children will be liberally provided for.
Edward VII, who will be amply pro
vided for bv the country, and the Duke
of York, who comes into the duchy of
Cornwall aud will be the Prince of
Wales, probably will not be snarers in
the late queen’s private fortunes.
The Late Queen’s Wealth.
Estimates made by the best informed
persons iu the financial field fix tho
value of Queen Victoria's private estate
at something between $.>0,000,00) ami
$';<), )U0.000 Parliament on her acces
sion granted her *1,025,000. Flint sum,
it was estimated, would maintain the
roval establishment and leave the sov
ereign $300,000 for pocket money or per-
annul expenses. Kiuce tin* lieathof Al
bert, the prince consort. it ia asserted
her majesty lias saved *250,000 a year of
that sum. This money, together with
its increftien,t, inis been invested under
the best advice that Loudon, the tinau-
cial center oi the world, could supply.
Added to it and accumulating euch year
is the sum of *2.300.000. the private for-
tuue of the prince consort, which was
bequeathed to the queen. She was nlso
the legatee of many admiring subjects
one of thorn deeding to her *2J 00,000.

GREEK UPRISING

Son of Chief Snake Captured

TO BE HELD AS A HOSTAGE
Indians Decline to Comply With Sum

Troops Have Not Yet Arrived at
Scene of the Disturbances.
Muscogee, L T., Jan. 25.—The Greek
uprising continues dangerous, the troop*
having us yet failed to arrive. United
States Marshal Bennett has captured
tho 17-year-old sou of Chief Snake and
has notified the latter that the boy
would be held as a hostage uutil Qie Iu*
dians surrendered. They so far have re
fused, and today hold two councils, oil!
at Bristow and ouo at Rush Hill.
The oue at Bristow stated that thi
threatened attack ou that town had not
yet begun, but the citizens are coutinu*
ing to arm themselves aud prepare for
an emergency. Marshal Bennett ex«
presses fear of bloodshed if the troops
ordered from Fort Reno do uot arrive
soon.
Marshal Bennett returned from hu-
faula today, after a visit with five depu
ties to the home of Chief Suake. When
he first entered Snake’s house but threw
people were there. Iu loss than 20 min
utes 50 light horsemen of tho Indian* of
Snake’s band gathered. They were all
heavily armed, but. offered no harm to
the officers. The Indians lmd been pick
eted about evidently to protect their
chief or to give warning of an attack.
Snake was not to lxi found, and Beuuetl

SOBER ENGLISH JOURNALISM
Shocked at “American Methods” At
tending Queen** Death,
London, Jau. 28, — Sober English
journalism was shocked at the display
arouud the Osborue house by the cor
respondents of the new Euglish sheets
of what The Times termed “American
methods.”
The scone before the Ludgato gate
following the announcement of the
queen’s death certainly did uot fit the
occasion. A crowd of reporters assem
bled with caos, horses and bicycles.
Hardly had tho words “Her majesty has
passed away” fallen from ffie official s
lips before the reporters and messen
gers, with a wild whoop, started to race
down the steep hill, half a mile to the
telegragh office, sotno of them bawling
to their assistants below, “The queen is
dead.” One English reporter sent a
rival sprawling from his bicycle, which
skinned his face in tho dirt, whereupon
he knocked down the aggressor.
Some “Kaked” Reports.
The court officials have been exceed
ingly active in running to earth false
reports like the fictitious deathbed
scenes, aud have already secured the re
call of two correspondents. They aro
now investigating the sources of the
premature announcements of her majes
ty’s death published in America, for the
purpose of acting against the authors.
Having access to all the telegraph and
telephone messages, they have discov
ered that no report was sent from Oowea
before the queen’s death, therefore it
mnst have been “faked” iu Ixmdon or
America.
Adherence to Traditions.
An unique illustration of British ad
herence to traditions marked the sign
ing of tho proclamation at St. James
palace. The lord mayor is always one
of the signers, whereupon, according to
the view of tlie privy councillors, he
must retire before the king outers and
the speeches aro made. An .ancient pic
ture represents the lord mayor among
the receivers of the king, therefore the
mayors invariably claim this right.
Wednesday, however, the Duke or
Devonshire (lord president of the coun
cil) requested the lord mayor to leave
tho room, which he reluctantly did.
