If Americus does not get a govern
ment bmlding at no distant date it
will not be because our member in
Congress. Hon. E. B. Lewis, is not
working to that end. Such a building
was recommended two or three years
ago, but with the usual red tape at
tending such appropriations nothing
farther has been done. Postmaster
Smith recently sent to Washington, at
the request of the Department, draw-
inga of certain plats of ground here
that might be wanted aa the aite for
the building. Mr. Lewis ia now in
correspondence with Postmaster Smith
relative thereto, and from this It wonld
seem that our case had been reopened.
There is need of a government build
ing in Americas, and it is to be hoped
that Mr. Lewis will succeed at no dis
tant day in getting a favorable consid
eration therefor.

JUDGE RENDERED A DECISION
In Salter Case Appointing Two Ad
ministrators.
A case of more than nsnal interest,
locally, was determined yesterday in
the conrt of ordinary in the appoint
ment of administrator in the Salter es
tate. Both Mrs. Victoria Salter, wid
ow of Jesse Salter, and Eugene Salter,
a stepson, were applicants for the ap
pointment, and on Monday last the
case occupied nearly the entire ses
sion. Judge Allen took the matter
under advisement and yesterday ap
pointed Eugene J- Salter and Judge
F. W. Griffin administrators jointly.
The estate to be administered upon
is worth perhaps 820,000.

HOLDING SOME OF HIS COTTON.
Carload Is Shipped From Schley to
Americus.
Hon. H. II. Singletary, Schley's
representative in the Legislature,
shipped a carload of cotton bales to
Americas yesterday from his planta
tion in tnat county. The cotton was
piled np at Council A McOurrah’s and
made qnite a show for this season.
Mr, Singletary is among other farmers
in this section who are able to bold
their crop until the price suits them.
He has more cotton at home, aud .the
forty bales shipped here yesterday
will be held until thelmarket improves.

The fact that Americas is to be given
better rating of insurance by the
Southeastern Tariff Association is a
matter of general interest and the in
formation will be hailed with pleasure
by business men generally and all
others who insure.
Instead of a third class rating, the
city will be pnt on even a better basis
than second class.
For two days past representatives of
the Southeastern Tariff Association
have been in conference with local
agents relative to the desired re-rating
of the city.
And while the local men did not get
all they w ished.msny concessions were
made them and the town was pnt on a
basis between first and second class,
being a considerable advancement.
Rad we an additional department
and electric alarm system, such as At
lanta or Savannah, onr basis would be
first class.
The efficiency of the local depart
ment, however, is fully recognized,
and the excellent record made last year
as regards fire losses stamps it one of
the best in the South.
In the re-rating of the city yester
day the local agents secured a reduc
tion on some classes of property, while
upon others the rate was deemed suf
ficiently low already and is the same
charged in the larger cities where the
risk is even greater.
The new basis will probably become
effective in March, or soon thereafter.
