AMERICUS WANTS

WOBKED A BAD CHECK HERE
Sleek Artist Is Now In Lumpkin, But
Several Other Towns Will Take a
Whack at Him as Well-A Much
Wanted Check Worker.

Nearly §4,500 Will Be Distributed In Postoffice Robbers Come to
Sumter ' Grief In North Carolina.
When various towns in Georgia.
Alabama and Florida have settled
scores with Abe Kline he will be
brought to Americus to answer the
charge of working a worthless 84m
check upon one of the banks here, be
ing verbally introduced by some new
acquaintance.
Kline was arrested two or three days
ago at Lumpkin and is being held by
the Stewart county authorities, where
he is probably wanted.
He has the reputation of being one
of the sleekest citizens on the road.
After a stay of a few days in Ameri
cas, during which time he worked
himself into the good graces of several
citizens, some of whom invited him to
their homes, Kline cash a worthless
check for $40 and went liiB way.
A warrant was issued at the instance
of the Americus bank which so kindly
cashed Kline's check, but other towns
were ahead of us.
It scemB that Kline has operated in
various parts of Georgia as well as oth
er states meutioned. His specialty was
disposing of worthless checks, drafts,
and other papers which he could in
duce incautious purchasers to believe
had some monetary value,
Kline is said to have negotiated a
worthless draft for 815 in Home. The
paper was drawn on a Baltimore house,
and was cashed by a hotel man.
Kline was conyicted in Borne of
cheating and swindling, but managed
to pay his fine. The Carroll county
authorities were on hand and he was
carried to Carrollton. There he was
convicted and managed to escape by
coming up with the cash.
But Alabama and Florida want Kline
on various charges as well.
A day or two ago Gov. Candler was
about to honor a requisition of the
Governor of Alabama for Kline, when
he remembered that Georgia still had
some scores to settle.
When Stewart county finishes with
Kline, if he has committed a crime
there, he will probably bo brought to
Ameircus, unless some other Georgia
town has been victimized by him and
claims priority. In this event Ameri
cus will await her turn.
It looks like a case of barber's rules
"next” as regards Kline.
SOFT PLACES ARE PLENTIFDL
And the Georgia Boys Will Receive
Their Share in the Way of Army
Appointments. Our Congressmen
Are Working Hard.
Senator Bacon has filed with the
War Department formal endorsement
orders for appointment to the regular
army of every [Georgia officer now in
the Philippines according to the rank
each now holds in the volunteer ser
vice. In all of these cases he has
written epeoial requests that the ap
pointments be made.
He has also added his endorsement
to the applications! ouch officers of the
third Immune Regiment, and of the
Georgia regiments recruited for the
Spanish War, as may desire to enter
the service as lieutenants.
Senator Clay haB made similar re
commendations, and oaoh of the mem
bers of the House are looking after in
terests of men from his district. They
are all ready and willing to aid not
only those already holding commis
sions, but men in the ranks who can
fill the requirements.
In other words, nobody is being
Blighted, bo he officer or private.
It is taken for granted at the War
Department that the men now in the
Philippines will be given the first
chance at these regular army berths,
then will come the volunteers like
Bay's Immunes who saw service in
Cuba, and after them the men who vol
unteered for the Cuban war.
Of course political pull will,however,
have a good deal to do with it,

His Life Was Saved.
Mr. J. E. Lilly, a prominent citizen
Hannibal, Mo., lately had a wonder-
1 deliverance from a frightful death,
telling of it he says: “1 was taken

onia. My lungs beame hardened. I

NOT : HEREDITARY
In the main, consumption
is not hereditary; it is infectious
People are too afraid of heredi
ty ; better not think of the sub
ject at all. Infection occurs
continually.
Low vital force is hereditary;
which gives consumption its
chance. And infection plants
it.
Between the two, the crop
is a big one: about onc-sixth
of the human race, so far as is
known.
We suppose it needn’t be 5
per cent, if people would take
fair care and Scott’s emulsion
of cod-liver oil.
The care saves life in all
ways; the emulsion is specially
aimed at the lungs, beside its
general food-effect.
We'll send you a little to try, if you like.

FIFTY DOLLARS FOR MONUMENT
Macon Citizen Makes a Liberal Con'
tribution.
Mrs. John A, Cobb, representing
both the Ladies Memorial Association
and Daughters of the Confederacy,
received yesterday a check for fifty
dollars from Captain J. Marsh John
ston, of Macon, as a donation in aid
ing theso ladies in paying the balance
duo upon our beautiful Confederate
monument. Captain Johnston is a
veteran of the Lost Cause and one of
Georgia’s best and most prominent
men. Ho owns large planting inter
ests in this county, and feels a great
interest in anything that concerns old
Sumter. This contribution to our
Confederate monument comes as
natural impulse of his great and no
ble heart. The world would be bet
ter with more snch men.
Judge T. M. Allen, of the court of
ordinary, distributed Saturday nearly
1,500 among Confederate widows and
Confederate soldiers of Americus
_ Sumter county, who are entitled
draw pensions annually. The ex-
.. snm paid out here was 84,330.
Many of the beneficiaries came for
ward and received their checks.
They range from 85 to $100, the first
amount being for the loss of a finger
and the 8100 check for the loss of a
limb. A majority of the checks were
ir 850 and 880 each.
There are twenty-three widows here,
these receive 880 each. Besides
these Spartan women there are fifty
old soldiers here who draw a pension,
making a total of seventy-three checks
received. Only pensioners who have
drawn heretofore are included.
But there are many poor and really
needy old soldiers in Sumter who ean-
get upon rolls, because they can
not get all the witnesses and evidence
required by the state.
Many very worthy ones here have
thus been turned down by tho depart
ment in recent years.
Then, too, the rolls are fall. Some
few of those in Americas who draw
their annual stipend are well-to-do
people; own beautiful homes and fine
plantations. But they are wounded
veterans and, under the law, are en
titled to draw along with the poorest
comrade.
But many a poor old fellow, really
needy and in direst want, cannot get
on the honor roll because it is fnll or
his “papers” are irregular.

After tt Pistol Fight With the l’ost-

quished and Officers Put On Their
Trail.
Asheville, N. C., Feb. 0 — Last
night about 10 o’clock four masked men
attempted to rob tbe postofflee and store
at Emma, the first station out from
Asheville, ou the Mul-phy branch of the
Southern railway, with the result tbat
two white men and one negro aro dan
gerously shot, and one white man and a
negro escaped injury but aro now in
jail.
About 10 o'clock Samuel Alexander,
assistant postmaster and clerk at Emma,
was aroused by a knock and a request
to get some one’s mail. On opening the
door, Alexander was covered by a pistol
and ordered to unlock the safe, which he
did. Oae robber held a pistol on Alex
ander while the other began to loot the
safe.
“It Was the Cat.”
A cat lying in the store jnmped clown,
making considerable noise and caused
the robber to turu his eye a moment,
when Alexander grasped the pistol of
tho robber going through the safe, which
he had laid down, and began firing,
and at the same time the robber opened
fire on him. The two robbers were
badly wounded, oue possibly fatally,
and Alexander has ugly shots in the
side, abdomen and back.
The robbers got away from the build
ing, and Alexander gave the Odd Fel
lows signal of distress, which brought
tbe postmaster. Tho police were no
tified, and by 3:30 this morning all tbe
robbers were safe in jail. Two of the
robbers were white and two negroes.
The white men are Russ Gates and
Dudley Johnson, the latter supposed to
bo a man wanted in Florida for murder.
The negroes are Ben Foster and Harry
Miller, ex-convicts, well known to the
local police.
Considerable sandbagging has been
going on in Asheville for several weeks.
