Jeffries and ISuhllu freparins to
Break Camp and Take tlie Itoad
Kor Tame Kxlilbitlons-Ttie Pro-
moters “In the Hole.”
Cincinnati, Feb. 15.-The majesty of
the law is certainly forcibly seen in
Cincinnati today. A 10-round boat be
tween Childs and Martin for the negro
championship of the world and a 30-
round bout between Jeffries and Uuhliu
for the heavyweight championship of
the world had been schodulad for Saeu-
ferfest hall tonight. That huge hall
stands alone on the commons adjoining
the Zoological gardens. No doors are
open. No ono is at the box office or
elsewhere in or about the great struct
ure. The Saengerfest board, that lost
$07,000 originally in the struoture, has
reoentl.v expended about *5,000 more in
remodeling the hall for the
boxing contests. They put in SO large
stoves and many arc lights. In the re-
Modeling provision was made for 3,oou
people in private boxes. These, with an
addlffoual seating capacity for 15,000
people, are likely to remain empty until
the wrecking company removes them
elsewhere. ,
The regulation ring remains in the
pit of the great amphitheatre also, as a
memento of previous announcements
and presont failures. The telegraph
dMhpaniel had strung dozens of wires
to the building, but they will have
nothing to flash throughthe desert air ot
that locality. As late as yesterday there
were rumors of troops swarming into
this suburban section, but uo soldiers or
citiisens can be seeu about that great
structure today.
Principal* Give It Up*
While no such scones of desolation
are observed at the training quarters
either of JefTrles or Ruhlin, yet it is
evident that they are discouraged and
are preparing to break camp. Jeffries
will join his oompany at Oolnmbus to
morrow and Ruhlin will spar with Den-
var Ed Martin at Marietta tomorrow
night, after whioh both will fill engage-
- ments for whioh thoy have beou sched
uled by their managers for the rost ot
^BntAhe most disconsolate parties of
all are to be found "down town’ at the
conferences of the Saongerfest Athletio
association with their oonnsel, Managers
Brady Madden, Cook and others. They
are holding informal oonferehces in sec
tions during the forenoon and expeot to
hold a joint conference after business
hours late this aftoruoou. It is not a
question of sottjlng up after the per
formance with them so much as after
the injunction. They are settling pn a
basis of largely increased expenses, In
stead of paying off their deficits, in
addition to remodelling the hall and
thousands of dollars of other «o?uses.
they have now a forfeit of |3,.i00 each
with the contestants to adjust._ They
are also considering the propriety of
carrying the injunction case to the cir-
onit and supreme courts. They have
six leading law ttrms engaged on their
side and have already expended largo
sums of money for counsel in tho litiga
tion, and the question of additional ex
pense in this lino is entering largoly
into the question of carrying the case to
the higher courts.
•‘There Are Olliers.”
The Saongerfest Athletio association
Is not tho onlv loser. Manager Brady
oancelled profitable dates for many
weeks for Jeffries and his company so
that be conld go into training and bas
been at a great expense in maintaining
bis training quarters. His loss is esti
mated at about *18,000. Manager Mad
den has had a similar experience in
taking Rubliu off of the road and sup
porting the large force at his training
quarters, and he estimates his losses at
more than half of that of Brady.
All of the parties who have been
connected with the proposed roil tost
that will not take place tonight are now
talking about their losses. They sBy
thev do not want any more such "sure
things,” where those in authority ore
not expected to interfere. All efforts
today are devoted to plans for getting
out of the "unpleasantness” involved
in the existiug difficulties.
