Esteemed and Aged Citizen Has Pass
ed Away.
Resigns as Pastor of First Baptist
Chared.
HIS FUNERAL LAST FRIDAY HIS ACTION A GREAT SURPRISE
For Sixty Years a Resident of Ameri
cus. he is Honored and Esteemed
Among all as a Gentleman and
Faithful Public Official.
Both Americas and Sumter county
sustained a very severe loss in the
death of Judge Joseph Henry Allen,
which occurred shortly before 7 o’clock
Thursday morning at his residence on
Lee street after a severe illness of only
a few days with pneumonia.
The announcement of the death of
Judge Allen was a great shock to the
entire community.
For sixty one years a citizen of
Amencue and during nearly half of
that period a trusted public official, he
was esteemed highly by eyery resident
of Sumter.
For two years past Judge Allen had
been in very feeble health, and when
stricken with pneumonia a few days
ago his family and many warm friends
feared that he conld not survive the
attack. His death was both peaceful
and painless.
A faithful official, a generous and
true friend and Christian gentleman
has laid down life’s burden for a re
ward on high.
Judge Allen has resided in Ameri
cas since 1840 when his parents re
moved here from Stewart county,
coming thence from Marion county, Ga,
where this son was born on January
30th 1833,
He remained upon his father's farm
until he came to Americas as clerk in
a store and began a mercantile career.
This was interrupted by the Civil War,
young Henry Allen being among the
first here.to respond to the call to arms
in 1801.
And his career as a soldier was one
of which ho might be prond.
Enlisting as a private in the Ameri
cas Itifles, Ninth Georgia Regiment,
he fonght through the four years from
Manassas to Appomattox, where he
commanded his company.
In November 1805 he married Miss
Anna Stanford here. Eight children
blessed their union and of these Mr.
H. Egbert Allen, Mrs. Nix and Mrs.
Taylor survive him.
His wife died in 18S1 and seven years
later he married Miss Ella J. Adams,
of Talbot county, who died a year af
terwards.
In July 1873 Judge Allen was elected
clerk of the superior court of Sumter,
a position ho has since filled with his
sun to assist in the duties during his
later illness. He was a Mason of high
standing and consistent member of
the Methodist church.
Judge Allen was a pure man, a true
and tried friend; upright, honest and
honorable always, and all of Sumter
-county deplores his death. ,
The funeral services were held from
First MethodiBt ehurch at 3 o’clock
Friday afternoon and was largely
attended. The pallbonrcrs wore
Messrs. R. J Perry, Charles R. Crisp,
fleorge D, Wheatley, T. Wheatley, G,
T. Miller, A. W, Smith, E. A. Haw

Formal Resignation Is Tendered Last
Night- Will Go to Mississippi For
Present Church Will Be Without a
Pastor Now-
Rev. Samuel C. Dean, for nearly
four years the beloved pastor of the
First Baptist church of Americas, ten
dered to that congregation last night
his formal resignation and will leave
at noon tomorrow for Gulf Port, Miss
to reside for a time.
It is needless to state that this ac
tion upon the part of Mr. Dean causes
deep and sincere regret in Ameriens.
Nor is thisjfeeling confined to mem
bers of his congregation.
Dnring a pastorate of nearly four
years here Mr. Dean has endeared
himself not only to the people of his
church but to tho community at large.
His has been a great and good work
here, and its termination causes deep
sorrow.
But now providential circumstances,
very largely, renders it necessary that
he go to Gulf Port, Miss, for the pres
ent, where Mrs. Dean remains very ill
at her parents home.
Her health, Mr. Dean fears, is se
riously impaired, and as she cannot
return to Amoricus he determined yes
terday to gs there and remain indefi
nitely, hence his resignation as pastor,
which was tendered the churoh last
night.
The meeting was very largely at
tended and the proceedings were deep
ly impressive.
Mr. Dean was urged to withdraw
his resignation, but declined to do so.
He felt that it was best for him to go,
though he severs his connection with
rogret.
This was his first church, and he
feels deeply attached to it. It was
here that he was ordained a minister
of Christ. It was here the first years
of his happy wedded life were passed,
and it is here he formed friendships
long to endure.
Mr. Dean does not know just yet
what field he will enter, thugh he has
had a number of flattering offers from
other churches since coming here.
He is a scholarly and eloqnentyonng
minister of the GoBpel and a most
earnest worker. His genial nature
and pleasing personality has made him
strong friends all over Georgia and
wherever known, and they are legion.
Americas will give him up with deep
and sincere regret.
And Resolutions Expressing Same Contest For Office of Clerk of Sumter

Rev. Samuel C. Dean leaves this
morning for Gulf Port, Miss., where
Mrs. Dean is spending some time with
relatives and is quite ill, her serious
condition being the cause of his resign
ing the pastorate of his chnrcb here
that he might attend her.
Mr. Dean’s departure from Americus
is still a subject of very general and
sincere regret.
At a meeting of the membership of
First Baptist church, at which time his
formal resignation as pastor was ten
dered, the following resolutions were
adopted.
Americus, Ga., Feb. 14th, 11)01.
Whereas, After serving lor over three
years as pastor of the First Baptist
church of Americas, the Rev. Samuel
C. Dean has tendered his resignation,
for the reasons therein stated, and kaB
requested that the same be accepted,
and
Whereas, Dnring the time he has
been with us he has labored earnestly
and zealously for the Master’s cause,
and has endeared himself to the mem

good qualities; therefore
Be it Resolved, By the members of
the First Baptist Church of Americus,
iu conference assembled, that we re
luctantly accept his resignation with
profound regret at the dissolution of
the relationship that has existed be
tween him, as pastor, and ourselves
daring the period he has labored
among us.
That we eommend him to those amoDg
whom his lot may be cast in the future
as an able and consecrated minister of
the gospel.
That wherever he may go, our good
will and best wishes will follow him,
and our prayers will be offered for his
welfare and success in his sacred call
ing; and we trust and pray that the
Almighty Father will have him in His
care and keeping, and will lead his
footsteps in the path He would have
him walk.
That these resolutions be spread upon
the minutes of this church, a copy be
furnished to Brother Dean, and that
city papers be requested to publish the
same.

Young Couple Quietly Wedded Here
Last Night.
The friends of Miss Rosa M. Mize
and Mr. Kenneth Bass will be a bit
surprised this morning to learn of their
marriage last night. The young con-
plo had been engaged quite awhile,
and last evening decided that St. Val
entine's dav was the most appropriate
for such a happy event as contemplat
ed. Leaving tbo home of the yonng
lady’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W.
Mize, they drove to the parsonage of
Rev. K. Read and in tho presence of
several friends were united in mar
riage. It was a romantic affair and fit
ting finale to St. Valentine’s Dav.
Judge Thomas M. Allen, of the
Court of Ordinary, has appointed H.
E. Allen, for many years deputy clerk
of court, to discharge the duties of the
position hold by bis father until the
office is filled by a regular election to
be held a mouth hence.
The eleetion kaB been called for April
3rd by Ordinary Allen.
And already a number of aspirants
are in the field and making au active
canvass. Current report yesterday
was to the effect that six men desired
the office.
There may be others, as the office
pays from 32,500 to »3,500 per annum,
according to the amount of business
done. There is no stated salary, the
fee system prevailing. This, however,
is amply sufficient iu amount to make
it a very desirable place.
Of tho six aspirants named yester
day, all may not formally enter the
contest, but tkoro will be enough ol
them to make it interesting.
Several formal announcements will
bo made this week, perhaps.
As stated in yesterday's Times-Re
.order, the vacancy will bo filled at t
regular county election, in which all
duly qualified voters of whatever par
ty can participate. To qualify, a vo
ter must have paid his taxes for last
year and registered also.
The fact that yon voted in the last
connty election, being then duly quali
fied, does not permit you to vote in
this one for olerk unless your taxes
for 11)00 are paid.
Balance Due Upon Monument Is Not
Great.
So successful have been the members
of the Ladies Memorial Association

their efforts to pay for tho Confeder
ate monument already erected in
Ameriens that the balance remaining
unpaid amounts now to only $250, and
they hope to reduce this considerably
b.store General Clement A. Evbub de
livers his great address here on Memo
rial Day, April 20th. Tho generous
gi.’t of »50 from Captain J. Marsh
Johnston, of Macon, a week ago, was a
great encouragement to these devoted
women, whose fondest hope is to see
the monument paid for. This might
have been done long ago, with funds
then in hand for the purpose, but
when the Federal Government im
proved Andcrsonvtlle National Como-
terfand left throe hundred graves of
Confederate soldiers in the woods nn-
cared for, the Ladies Memorial Socie
ty of Americas took the monoy raised
for a monument, disinterred tho 3)0
patriots, representing every Southern
state, removed the ashes to beautifal
Oak Grove cemetery in Americus and
placed a marble slab at the bead
each.

BOUGHT MILLIONS OF MATCHES
Big Shipment cf the Light Producers
Here.
Ordinarily a match is a small affair,
but twenty-one million of them piled
up together is quite an unusual, not
to say striking spectacle. Piled up in
front of the Glover Grocery Co’s, store
yesterday were cases containing 21,-
800,000 of these diminutive light pro
dacers. There were fifty cases of
matches and the lot represented an
outlay of nearly $1,200. Think of that
amount invested iu matches by one
house. Many cords of wood were used
in their manufacture. The matches
aro two inches in length, and if laid on
the ground, end to end, would reach a
distance of 882 miles, or from Amerious
to Washington City. This story of a
match is unmatched and unmatchable.
