COMMERCE IN PHILIPPINES
Figures Showing Imports ami Ex*
ports For Seven Months.
Washington, Fob. 16.—The division
of insular affairs of the war department
today made public a statement showing
the commerce of the Philippines for the
seven months ended July 31, 1900. The
total value of merchandise, gold and
silver imported into the islands during
the period uamed was $13,309,554, an
increase of $3,820,396, or over 40 per
cent, compared with 1899.
The total exports from the Philippine!
to all countries combined amounted in
value to $15,624,015, an increase of 84**
per cent over 1899.
The trade with the United States was:
Imports from this country, $1,092,726;
exports, $1,826,678. These latter figures,
as compared with the results for the
same period of the preceding year, in
dicate a gain of over 70 per cent in the
imports aud a material decrease iu the
exports. _

Cincinn ati, Feb. 15.—Thirty passen
gers in a street car coming to Cincin
nati from Dayton, Ky., were carried
down a 50-foot embankment into the
bed of a small stream on tho Kentucky
side of the Ohio river between 9 aud 10
o’clock this morulug, aud only one of
the number escaped injury. At the
same time, not ono of the unmber was
instantly killed. How many may die
cannot yet be told.
The accident took. place at a point on
the stroet where th'e car was coming
down grade. Some sort of obstraotlon
seemed to suddenly divert the car.' It
turned to the right, crossed the side
walk with such momentum as to tear
down a fence, cut off the top of a small
tree aud dropped 50 feet dowu into the
bod of the littlo stream.
Brave Motorman.
As before stated, no oue was killed
outright, but tho bravo motorman,
Samuel Yates, who had stayed at his
post in a vain effort to check tho speed
of the car, was fearfully injured about
the head, aud was taken to Spears hos
pital, whore his injuries were said to be
fatal.
Among the others seriously injured
are W. H. McCormick, Bellevue; Miss
Edua Contaus, Bellevue, may die; Wm.
Spencer. Dayton, seriously injnred; A.
H. Waggner, Bellevue, severely; Miss
Ella Muxoll. Westwood, O.. seriously.
The greater number received slight
wounds and bruises. Miss Emma Hamp
ton was tho only one who escaped en
tirely, and she swooned when taken
from tho wreck.
