r This prior-to-stock-taking-sale will not continue
indefinitely; it is important, therefore, that you attend
this sale immediately, and that you anticipate your
wants for sometime to come.
The handsome residence of Mr.
Thornton Wheatley narrowly escaped
destruction by fire at 10 o'clock yester-
dap morning, the flames having their
origin in a cnimney flue and spreading
with snch rapidity that the roof was
soon ablaze.
That any portion of the bnilding was
saved seems miracnlons.
The department did efficient work,
and after bottling with the flames for
nearly an hour the fire was extinguish
ed though the house was very badly
damaged.
A high wind prevailed, which ren
dered the work of the firemen much
more difficult, besides endangering oth
er bnildings in the neighborhood. At
one time the entire roof was envelop
ed and the spectators considered its
destruction almost sure.
The department was ably assisted by
willing citizens, many of them old flre-
men who also knew what to do and
how to do it.
The flames licked angrily at the roof,
as the flremen fought them hack.
In the meanwhile nearly all furni
ture, carpets pictures and other con
tents wore taken carefully from the
hoHse to the lawn. There was no un
due excitement, and the handsome
furniture waB removed with but slight
loss or breakage of the artioles.
Threo streams of water were pouring
npon the roof in the meanwhile, and
the flremen soon had the flames nnder
control.
While several • gentlemen were re
moving the effects from a second floor
room the burning ceiling fell upon
them, but barring a few slight cats
andscorohed hands they escaped with
out iDjnry.
Americus has rarely seen a fire better
managed in every way.
The loss will amount to several
thousand dollars, which is fully cover
cd by insurance in the Southern Mu
tual. Mr. Wheatley had more than
$4,000 insurance on his dwelling and
furniture. The Iobs sustained bus not
yet been estimated.
The efficient work of the department,
no doubt, prevented the most serious
conflagration in recent years in Ameri-
ons.

Sonthern Railway, extending from
Chattanooga to Carrollton, Ga., where
it conneots with the Central.
The Seaboard secured IK) percent of
the stock of the other company.
The Chattanooga, Rome and South
ern Railway is 140 miles long and ex
tends south to Carrollton. This point
is about a hundred miles north of Co
lumbus, the nearest point on the old
Georgia fc Alabama, where the lines
might oonneot.
The newly acquired road passes
through Lafayette, TrioD, Rome and
CedartowD, and at Carrollton conneots
with the Savannah, Griffin and North
Alabama road, a part of the Central of
Georgia system.
The Chattanooga, Rome andColnm-

old Central railway system, giving it a
line to Chattanooga, but when the
Central went into the hands of receiv
