Chicago, Feb. 23. — In accordance

the duy # > program tnc club will give u
banqnet ut the Auditorium tonight.
The Marquette club will also give a din
ner duriug the evening, at which appro
priate speeches will be made.
Celebrations held during the day or
scheduled for the night by other clubi
and organizations were numerous.
Banks, railroad offices, the board of
trade, the Stock Exchange and the ma
jority of the schools were closed. Ad-

dresso. were made at the University of
Chicago and the Northwestern nmver-
sity at Evanstou. Five thousand chtl*
dren crowded into the Auditorium dur*
ing the forenoou, a special program
having been arranged for them.
Tho event of the day was the big af*
ternoou meeting at the Auditorium,
which Frederick Harrison, tho famous
English author aud philoshophical ora
tor, was tho chief speaker, his subject
being "George Washington.
The railroad offices closed at 1 p. m..
haring signed’ a petition to do so which
had been circulated by the Canadian
Pacific aud Grand Trunk railways
“Patriotism and C haracter.’
Bishop Spalding of Psora delivered
au eloquent address on "Patriotism and
Character.” He spoke in part as fol
lows: . , _
“A*-’ they alouo are Christiaus who
strive to lead a high aud worthy life. t-o
only those who aro seriously intent ou
making themselves wise, strong and
virtuous are patriots. Words are ldl*
unless they are tilled with meaning by
the deeds of those who utter them. A I
soldier may die in battle for his country
and be only a mercenary, but ho who
so lives as to make men thankful that
he is their fellow citizen is a i»atriot.
By making use of the opportunities
which liberty offers, oue may amass
vast wealth and be an enemy of free
dom, but he who frees himself from
within by overcoming ignorance and
greed makes us think well not only of
himself but of his country also.
“The characteristics of true Ameri
can good will, sympathy with the help
less and oppressed, intelligence, up-
righteousness, energy, courage and in
dustry, and if we love our country and
desire to make its institutions perma
nent we must labor to cultivate these
virtues iu ourselves and in those whom
\ve are able to influence.
“The love of education ill the deep
sense of the word aud the love of coun
try are oue aud the same love. Noth
ing but education, domestic, religious
aud scholastic, can form the virtues
which make patriots. • Character is the
man himself; it is precisely this moral
S owth which it is the-chief business ol
e school to promote, and if it fails iu
this it fails radically*
Value of Character.
“A characterless man is neither good
in himself nor good in his relations to
any form of tho social environments.
If the average of moral and intellectual
culture were higher, we should be able
not onlv to procure the needs aud com
forts of life with less effort, hut we
should have the wisdom and strougth
to denv ourselves many things which
are harmful and mere wastes of indi
vidual aud national force. Ail the lux
uries involve dissipation of vital energy
ami deterioration of the quality of life.
But among the luxuries tin sensible man
' w iU place tho great works of art, winch
spring from the highest activities of the
soul, ami without which our wuule ex
istence must sink to lower levels.
-What more striking instance could
there be of the ermte kiml of tuinkmg
iu vogue among us than that a mover-
sitv professor should deem it not absurd
to "place u grout money gatherer ou the
sumo footing with a great poet, The
oue is n mechanical; the other a vital
, man. Kiches are akin to fear, to cow
ardice ami death, but tho highest
thought rightly expressed is the Hue
essence of the purest life stored up for
all who are able to appreciate and ad-
ire even to file remotest age.
