raUtcr common in England, but, so far
known, more money is pat up on Mor-
*, B than on any other person, and
much more than was invested on the
la . e (Jtteon’s life.
of course the life of a person like
Morgan would be of immeasurably
greater consequence to investors in
Ur -e undertakings than would that of
Victoria or any other British monarch.
Tbs death of Morgan at the preseut
l3je wo uUl be calculated to have a far
,re a ter disturbing influence on the
stock market.and through this medium
,,0 .-eueral business, than Victoria’s
flemlso exerted,or than that of Edward
Vif. could have. In fact, the death of
• he i biceti caused scarcely a ripple
. world's bourses. That of the pre-
. , u t British monarch would, under ex
istiu" conditions, have somewhat more
~ , t |jnt it would be slight compared
wUh that which would result from the
death of some great magnate ill the
world of liuanco like Morgan, Ilarri-
n.au or llockefellcr.
The effect would be world wide as
well as instantaneous. The intimacy
cl the commercial relations of each
country with every other one, and tho
extension and multiplication of the de
vices for transferring ownership in pro
perty from one hemisphere to the other
swiftly and cheaply, have transformed
the whole world into a single bnsincss
community. Race lines drop out in the
realm of finance. Lipton from Ireland
cornered pork in Chicago, and fixed
the price for every country which nsod
it. Morgan's enterprises oxtend over n
large part of Europe as well as over tho
p n ited States. Nobody on either con
tinent asked or eared anything about
the nationality of these personages. In
a financial sense there are fewer race
lines today than thero were in the time
of Charlemagne's or Otho's Holy
Roman Empire. Mandates go out
these days from New York and London
which secure more universal acquice-
cenco than did any command which
was issued from the Eternal City in
the age of Caesar or Trajan.

DEEP SNOW; HARD FREEZE
Georgia Sustains the Heaviest Fall
of “The Beautiful” and Texas Gets
Three to Six Inches—Fair but Colder
Weather Predicted.
Atlanta. Feb. 23. — The southern
states, from Texas to the Atlantic coast,
were given their first tasto of winter
last night and morning, snow falling in
many places, from Charleston, 8. C., to
central and northern Texas, and almost
to the gulf. The storm, which was over
the west gulf coast last, night, moved
rapidly to the east during the night and
is central today over northern Florida,
where snow is expected daring the next
12 hours.

• PLANTATION MANNERS "
The Philadelphia Press, commenting
on recent utterances of Senator Till
man, of South Carolina, who asked the
question, “The war is over, is it not?”
says: “Well, the war is over, but it
cannot bo said with equal truth that
plantation manuers are over.” This
reads like tho utterance of a Northern
radical sheet or bloody shirt waver of a
generation ago. Persons who try to be
severe by sneering at “plantation man
ners, M are not apt to have much know-
lodge of manners of any character. No
man has over used tho phrase as a torm
of reproach who ever had any know
ledge of plantation manners. The
manuers of the old Southern planta
tion commanded the admiration of the
world, aud it is to bo regretted that they
are not more in vogue to-day. There
has never been a higher type of civili
zation tliau that of the old South; never
a higher standard of honor and brav
ery, of honesty and chivalry;never more
intelligent observance of the gentili
ties, refinements, courtesies aud civili
ties of life; never people of more gen
tle breeding and true culture than
those of which tho old South boasted—
that old South which has forever pass
ed, but which lingers in the memory
like a sweet perfume. Iu the loss of it
w e have gained some things, desirable,
hut wo lievo lost some things that will
make us forever poorer, no matter how
rich in material wealth v;e may'grow.
The cheap person who sneers; at plau-
tati«tu manners reminds one of a tramp
sneering at the clean skin and linen of
AgcuUcman. As to Senator Tillman,
the mauiitrs he displays in the Senate

imediateiy called out, but
gained such headway that
it was impossible to either save the
Maddox building or coniine it to this.
Almost immediately alter the explosion
the flames leaped over the 20-foot alley
between the Maddox building aud the
Markham house five story building, the
reurof which was soon fiercely burning.
The Maddox Grocery company Will
perhaps be the heaviest losers. They
carried an immense stock of groceries
and lmd hundreds of orders which it
will be impossible to fill. It is reported
that they carried papers worth $125,000
iu their safe, which is said to be fire
proof and it is hojied will be recovered
uninjured.
Weather,
reuuneu vy wo —- -—
this morning extends to the southern
portion of Georgia and to the coasts of
Alabama and Louisiana.
Iu some portions of the south the
snowstorm was brought on the wings of
high northwest winds, which wrecked
all telegraph aud telephone communica
tion.
Ileuvlest Fall 111 Georgia.
The heaviest snowfall recorded is at
LaGrauge, Ga., where the precipitation
was 10 inches. At Birmingham thero
Is about 0 inches; Montgomery reports
a similar depth and very cold weather;
southern Alis.-issippi reports the first
snow in some places in two years; there
is none at New Orleans.
The precipitation reported at Dallas
is 3 inches aud in northwestern Texas
from 3 to 0 inches. The snow' is, of
course, of great benefit to the growing
wheat, but it is feared will cause severe
loss to livestock.
Fiv
The intense cold added greatly to the
difficulty of fighting the fire, the ther*
mometer at 2 o’clock this morning hav
ing fallen to 1C above zero. Long icicles
hung from the ludder up which the fire
men had to climb, the firemen them
selves were coated with ice, and water
that collected in pools about the streets
was frozen hard. So fur as has been
ascertained, no lives were lost in the
fire.
This is the same block that was almost
totally burned when the old Markham
House was destroyed iu 1896. The loss
at this time will bo greater than then,
tho buildings being comparatively now
and much better structures than the
old. The 5-storv building on the site of
the old hotel was considered one of the
best fire risks in the city.
AMERICUS FUKNIIURE AND
•lies In Atlanta.
Iu Atlanta snow began falling last
night, aud by 10 o’clock this morning
tho ground was covered to a depth of 5
inches. All trains were from 20 minutes
to 2 hours late, causing a consequent de
lay to mails. The street car companies
called out their men at 2 o’clock this
morning and put their cars into service
for the purpose of keeping their tracks
open. This served in a measure to avert
a complete suspension of service this
morning.
Fair and much colder weather is pre
dicted for tonight and Sunday.
Snow In Savannah.
Savannah. Feb. 23.—Savannah is in
the grip of the storm king today—snow
ing, sleeting aud raining by turns. The
weather bureau predicts a temperature
of 21 for tonight. Great injury has
been done to young vegetables on the
truck farms.

Father Intimates Son Was Misled by
.Mrs. Wilson.
Atlanta, Feb. 23.—Relative to the
connection of Will Hamilton with Mrs.
Helen M. Wilson, the finding of whose
bodies created a profound sensation last
week, an interesting letter has been
written to Atlanta by Dr. W. T. Ham-
iltou, the father of the unfortunate
young man, who lives in Alexander
City, Ala.
This letfer not only gives some light
on the life of Hamilton as passed before
his coming to Atlanta, but also tells the
story of his infatuation for tho woman
whose life he destroyed. The father
states that he was unable to wean his
son from bis love for the woman by any
consideration he could offer.
The father also tells an iutercsting
story regarding his son’s inheriting sev
eral thousand dollars which he soon
spent. No direct charges are made, but
it is intimated that Mrs. Wilson recoived
tho benefit of much of the sum spent.
In what wav this benefit was incurred
the father does not say. Ho docs say,
however, that as long as Hamilton wus
nble to play the gentleman he held favor
iu the sight of Mrs. Wilson.
