Which Could Be of Benefit to Some
Here.
A man walked into a newspaper
office once upon a time, just as they
do in Americas occasionally, and ap
proaching the editor sail:
“Look hore, if you want something
to fill up your paper with, you might
gay in the morning that I have opened
a nice grocery store, and want the peo
ple to trade with me. "
“All right," replied the scribe,” bnt
had’nt you better put in a regular ad
vertisement for a month
“No, not right now" replied the new
comer “I just thought you might
make a newB item of my business in
order to fill np space."
“Well, don’t yon want to subscribe
for the paper" asked rhe news man.
“Well, no," replied the genteel
deadbeat, “Yon see, I take an Atlan
ta paper and three story paperB print
ed in Chicago, and that’s all I have
time to read,”
“All right," replied the news man,
and he smiled softly to himself.
That afternoon he went to the new
store and ordered a wagon load of gro
ceries sent to his house.
The new merchant was most oblig
ing. The hams, lard, flour, sugar and
coffee were weighed np, and when all
was loaded on the wagon he made ont a
bill for ten dollars.
“But I did’nt msan to pay for the
goods” said tbe scribe to tho pharisee.,
“I only ordered team to help ‘‘fill up”
your wagon, just as you ordered that
nows item today,"
Then the new grocer saw tbe point,
and tbe editor went back to his oflleo
and deftly pitched the "uows” item into
the waste basket.

BLOOD
We live by our blood, and
on it. We thrive or starve, as
our blood is rich or poor.
There is nothing else to live
on or by.
When strength is full and
spirits high, we are being re
freshed, hone muscle and brain,
in body and mind, with con
tinual flow of rich blood.
This is health.
When weak, in low spirits,
nc cheer, no spring, when rest
is not rest and sleep is not
sleep, we are starved; our blood
is poor; there is little nutri
ment in it.
Back of the blood, is food
to keep the blood rich. When
it fails, take Scott’s emulsion
of cod-liver oil. It sets the
whole body going again—man
woman and child.
Americus people were not a little as
tonished on awaking Saturday morn
ing to find the earth covered in snow
to a depth of three inches, while the
fleecy flakes still fell,
They had retired at the close of a de
lightful spring day, when bright sun
shine had made glad the earth. They
had seen the flowers in bloom, the bud
ding trees and singing birds, and the
thought of a snowstorm was as remote
to them as a South Paoiflo typhoon.
In fact, thoy read in Saturday’s
Times-Reeorder of the budding- -etc.
etc., ete.
Imagine their consternation, on look
ing from their paper, to see ths heavy
flakes falling upon an already snow-
covered ground. It was a sudden
transition from gentle spring back to
the clutches of hoary winter. Spring
was a bit too previous; that's all.
It was the first snow Americas had
seen since January 1st, 1900, and eager-
lv tho people went forth to snowball
each other.
Upon every residence street and in
the downtown district batteries were
quickly thrown up, ami woo be unto
the luckless pasBer-by. Staid matrons
and pretty girls alike enjoyed tho
sport and hurled the feathery balls.
But “the beautiful” was not to be of
very long duration.
By 10 o'clock < Id Sol wbb getting in
his work, and tho snow-covered streets
were soon transformed into rivnlets of
sluBh and mud, while the sidowalks
dried off rapidly.
On the roofs of many buildings the
snow drifted to a depth of ten or
twelve inches, and where protected
from the sun it still remains. The
green trees, bending beneath their
weight of snow, presented a beautiful
picture, tbe like of which is rarely
witnessed here.
This snowstorm was the heaviest
that ever fell in Americas, it is said

there was wild disorder, the house
catching fire in the meantime, but none

Sax Francisco, Feb. 22.—The steamer
Rio de Janeiro, h'om the Orient and
Honolulu, struck on a rock at an oarly
hour this morning just outside the
Golden Gate and sunk in 20 miuutes. A
large number were drowned.
The vessel had been lying off th*
Heads all night, an unusually heavy
fog prevailing. At 4 o’clock this morn*
ing she weighed anchor and headed for
tho city, in charge of Pilot Frank Gor
don. Shortly afterwards the vessel
struck a hidden rock and Pilot Jordan
shouted for all on board to take to the
boats. The wildest confusion prevailed
The passengers and crew alike scram
bled for the boats, and iu their endeavor
to escape from the rapidly sinking ves
sel many jumped overboard.
Captain Ward ordered several of the
boats alongside and the ladies of tht
cabin and other passengers were placed
in them. The boats were manned by
part of the crew and headed citywards.
So far as is known, but three of the
ship’s boats left the vessel.
On board the Rio de Janeiro were 29
cabin passengers, 15J iu the steerage

Washington s birthday was observed

tho rescued.
There is an unverified rumor to the
effect that Consul Wildeman of Hong-
Kong aud his son wero among those
who were drowned.
The vo: «el sank in less than SO min
utes, and is possible that tho list of
fatalities will bo large.
G. H. Sheets, a German officer, was
rescued by the life-saving crew. He
said that the fog prevented him from
seeing wku: was going on in the work
of rescue. He procured a life preserver,
fastoned it about him and jumped over
board.
Pilot Captain Jordan was taken on
board yesterday afternoon inside the
Farallones. The ship then laid to until
4:30 this morning, when the weather
cleared somewhat. Tho steamer then
started under hplf steam toward Point
Benito. She held to her courso uutil
5:20, when she struck a rock. There
was a terrific jar. Tho steamer kept an
even keel for 15 minutes, when sho sud'
denly plunged downward, bow first.
The number of lives lost in tho wreck
is variously estimated at from 50 to 150.
It is almost positive that Consul Wilde-
man, his wife aud two children are
among the number lost. Nothing has
been seen of tho Wildeman family since
the vessel struck tho rook.
Tho purser, John Rooney, is missing,
and all his papers, it is believed, went
dowu with the vessel. Unless ho is
found alive or his pouch is recovered, it
will be impossible to fully determine
tho total loss of life until tho agency of
