Mr.. TUMkfu'l ©rjllil'Hurtl lives in the beautiful village of Brighton,

toIINSTON’S SARSAPARILLA. Mrs. Hurd inherited a tendency and pro*

and often is, the prime cause or consumption.
Speaking of lice case, Mrs. Ilurd says: “I was troubled for many years
vritli a bad skin disease. My arms an ( i limbs would break out in a mass of
.ores, discharging yellow matter. My neck began to swell and became very
unsightly in appearance. My body was covered with scrofulous eruptions..
Mv eyes were also greatly Inflamed and weakened, and they pained me very
much. My blood was in a very bad condition and my head ached severely
at frequent intervals, and I bad no appetite. I had sores also in my ears. I
wa s In a miserable condition. I had tried every remedy that had.been recom
mended, and doctor after doctor had failed. One of the best physicians In
tbe state told me I must die of scrofulous consumption, as internal abcesses
were beginning to form. I at length was told of Dr. Johnston, of Detroit, and
his famous Sarsaparilla. I tried a bottle, more as an experiment than any
thing else, as I had no faith in it, and greatly to my agreeable surprise, I
began to grow better. Ton can be sure I kept on taking it I took a great
many bottles. But I steadily improved until I became entirely well. All the
sores healed up. all the bad symptoms disappeared. I gained perfect health,
and I have never been troubled with scrofula since. Of course an old lady
of 83 rears is not a young woman, but I have had remarkably good health
since then, and I firmly believe that JOHNSTON’S SARSAPARILLA is the
greatest Wood purifier anil the best medicine In the wide world, both for
scrofula and as a spring medicine.” This remarkably interesting old lady did
not lok to be more than sixty, and she repeated several times, “I believe my
lire was saved by JOHNSTON’S SARSAPARILLA.”

SATURDAY’S PROCEEDINGS
A Quarter of a Million Dollars Ap

position — Ollier Hills Passed — A
Laugh lu the Senate.
Washington, iTeb. 23.—The bill pro
viding for the Louisiana Purchase Ex*
position at St*. Louis has passed tho sen
ate, with an amendment which provides
for thq closing of the exposition on Sun
day and a farther amendment providing
for a government exhibit at the Charles
ton exposition. The bill passed the sen
ate without division. It made an ap
propriation of 1250,000 for the govern
ment exhibit On motion of Mr. Toller,
an amendment providing for the closing
of the Charleston exposition on Sundays
was adopted, aud the Tillman amend
ment was then agreed to without di
vision. Then, without a dissenting
voice, the bill was paosed.
Tho fortification appropriation bill
was taken up, aud Mr. Butler of North
Carolina spoke of the largo appropria
tions contained in this and other meas
ures. He criticised the appropriation
of $225,000 for the purchase of Cash
ing’s island, Maine, for fortification
purposes.
Cuused a Laugh.
Mr. Pettigrew created a laugh during
the presentation of the morning busi
ness by proposing an amendment to the
army appropriation bill, reading: “And
that the title of tho presineut shall
hereafter be ‘The President of the so-
called Republic of the United States
and the Emperor of tUe Islands of the
Sea.’ ••
Mr. Butler jocularly asked if the com
ing inauguration ceremonies wer6 taking
into account this imperial regime.
“Yes, everything will be conducted
with due pomp,” remarked Mr. Petti
grew.
“The senaior from South Dakota (Pet
tigrew) aud the seuuror from North
Carolina (Butler) and myself shouldnol
feel concerned about such matters,” in
terjected Mr. Chandler, “for none of
us will be hero.”
Mr. Chandler’s reference to the speedy
retirement of himself and Messrs. Pet
tigrew and Butler raised another laugh.
Southern Bills Fussed.
Among the other bills passed by the
senate were the following: Authorizing
a street car bridge across the Alabama
river at Montgomery, Ala.; authorizing
the construction of a bridge across
Bavoca bay, Calhoun county, Tex.
Mr. Morgan made a speech demand
ing that the canal bill should be made
the regular order of the senate. He said
every parliamentary strategy was being
used to defeat the bill. He thought it
time for plain talk, while some of our
people in authority were being kicked
and cuffed about by King Edward VII;
also, that it was time for some attention
to be given to this purely Atnericau en
terprise.

ELEVEN KILLED
AND 43 INJURED
Result of Accident on the
Pennsylvania Railroad.
CONDUCTOR WAS AT FAULT
Fast Express Crashes Into an Accom
modation Train, the Conductor of
the Latter flavins Failed to Fully
Carry GU*t fils Orders.
Trenton, f»b. 22.—The total number
of dead-In tile Pennsylvania wreck at
Rusliug's Siting hear Bordentowu last
night is now known to be at least ten.
There are eight bodies in the Trenton
morgue, aud Coroner Bower went to
tho scene of the wreck this morning to
bring two more bodies to Trenton that
had been taken from underneath the
wreckage during the early moruing.
The only dead persona yet identified
are Engineer Earle of the “Nellie Bly”
express, Baggagemhster James Bir
mingham of the local train, and J. F.
“~aile of Trenton, who was a passenger
on the local train. One of the passen
gers is thought to be William McKin
ney of Trenton.
Engineer Thompson of the looal train
is in a very precarious condition. Frank
Borden, a passengor on the local train
who had lost both legs, probably will
die. Two others of the injured, both
Italians, are in a serious condition, but
all of the others are sure to recover.
Fireman Garwood of the local train,
who is at tho Mercer hospital, is cred
ited with having made the statement
that the orders to Engineer Thompson
of the looal were to take the siding at
Rnslings and await the passing of the
second section of the “Nellie Bljr.” As
it was the third section of the train
that crashed iuto the local, there ap
pears to have been a misunderstanding
of orders.
Responsibility Fixed.
Philadelphia, Feb. 23.—Superin
tendent Abercrombie of the Amboy di
vision of tho Pennsylvania railroad said
today, regarding the responsibility for
the wreck near Bordentowu last night,
that Conductor Edward Sapp of tbe ac
commodation train, which left Camden
at 8:30 yesterday afternoon, had instruc
tions to wait on the siding until the
three sections of the express train had
passed. Instead of doing this, he laid,
Sapp ran on to the main line after only
two sections bad gono by.
Throe bodies were found today in the
Raritan canal. They are those of Ital
ian laborers and have been identified.
This makes the list of dead 11 and the
list of injured 43—25 serious and 18
slight.
Conductor Sapp, who is badly injured,
is as his home in Bordentwon. He has
made no statement, aud Superintendent
Abercrombio says an explanation will
not be demanded of him at present, as
the mental, strain might prove fatal.
Hotlies Uadly Charred.
Trenton, Feb. 33.—Tho total number
of dead as a result of the wreck at Rus-
lings Siding, near Bordentowu, last
night is now ascertained to be 11. Bo-
sides the eight bodies brought to Tren
ton last night, three more were brought
in this morning. They were badly
charred. One was that of a woman
who was so badly burned that there Is
nothing left bat her breast aud her head.
Of the number killed, besides Engineer
Earle and Baggngemaster Birmingham,
three others have been identified. One
It J. Walter Nuilo, a Trenton salesman.
Another is that of William Mlnney, a
laborer, supposed to live at Florenoe,
N. J. Another identified was —
Stokes of Bristol, Pa.
Three Trenton potters who worked at
tho Ironsides pottery, Bordentown, are
supposed to have been on the train.
They are missing. Their names aro
Thomas O. McGee, John Gates aud John
Farrell.

Columbia, 8. C., Feb. 22.—James W.

Phenix section, iu Greenwood county,
at the time of the election riots in No
vember, 1803, was shot down iu tbe
street of McCormick yesterday by a
partv of masked mou.
Several days ago Tolbert arrived at
McCormick, aud has been engaged in
renting his property. The people of the
towu iliii not molest him, and he paid
uo attention to an anonymous letter re
ceived advising him to leave at once.
Yesterday a party of masked men rodo
iuto town from the country and en
countered Tolbert, who was having
some repairs done to oue of his build
ings. On being ordered to surrender,
Tolbert began shooting. Ho emptied his
pistol, tiie masked men also firing, both
parties backing away frum eaeii other
till Tolbert tell.
A voting man named Martin, who
was vi- ; “' **g in the town, is said to bo
tuorta y tot, and Tolbert's condition
is mot serious; he — >s shot through
tiie left lung and out a? t.
Countrymen are „..(.tiering in tho
towu, aud the feeling is that if Martin
dies Tolbert will be lynched. His
brother will attempt to have him moved
to Augusta, believing the risk better
than his remaining in McCormick.

Miners Penned In a Pit Into Which
Water Hushes. ,
Tuscaloosa, Ala., Feb. 21.—Thirteen
miners wero entombed in the insane
hospital coal mines, two miles from
here, by 10 feet of water, yesterday
afternoon. Elevon others escaped be
fore the rnshing waters coaid hem them
in. The accident was due to the care
lessness of a miner wno was digging
cool close to an abandoned shaft which
had been filled with water some time.
The wall was cut throngh and the
water poured in on the miners, all of
whom were negroes. There is a large
force of hands at work pnmping tho
water oat of the mines, bat little pro
gress is being made, as it fills np almost
os rapidly as it is pumped ont.
Tho fate of the entombed miners is
problematical, as it will take from 24 to
48 hoars to clear the mines. At present
there appears practically no hope for
them unless there is some way by which
air can reach them.
