Washington, Feb. 28.—The con
ferees of the senate and house upon the
war revenue reduction bill today an
nounced the result of their deliberations
upon that measure. As already stated,
the report of the committee shows a
compromise all along the lines of the
bill, the changes in the prosent law be
ing as folliiws:
Tobacco—Twenty per cent discount
of the original tux of 12 cents per pound,
ns against 25 per cent reduction as fixed
by the senate and none as the bill passed

stated in these dispatches yesterday.
Cigars—On those weighing more than
8 pounds j ter 1,000 the house rate of $J
per 1,000 was retained, as against fo.oO
as fixed bv the senate and fJ.fSO as in
the present law. Ou thoso weighing
less than 3 pounds per 1,000, the senate
rate of 18 cents per pound was allowed
to stand, as against the rate of $1 per
1,000 as fixed by the existing law, which
was not disturbed by the house.
Cigarettes—Ou those weighing not
more than 3 pounds per 1,000, the sen
ate actiuu fixing the rate at 18 cents per
pound prevailed. The house did not
change the existing law.
B eer _The house rate of $1.00 per bar
rel and repealing the 78, discount was
retained.
Bankers' capital — Prosent law re*
tained, the senate receding from its
amendment. , , .
The stock brokers tax is repealed by
the original action of both housos.
Certificates of stock taansferred—
Rate of 2 cent for each $100 is re
tained, and tlieseuate amendment mak
ing the law include the transactions of
bucketshops was accepted by the house
conferees.
Sales of products at exchauges—The
xenate amendment exempting sales of
merchandise in actual course of trans
portation was accepted, but the rate of
1 cent for each $100 as fixed by the
present law was retained, the senate
amendment making the rate $3 being
disagreed to.
Bank checks—Uepoaled in accordance
with the house action.
Certificates of deposit—Tax repealod.
Promissory notes—Tax repealed.
Money orders—Tax repealed.
Bills of exchange, foreign—The rato
fixed at 2 cents for eacli $100, in accord
ance with the senate amendment.
Bills of lading for export—Repealed.
Express recoipts—Repealed.
Telephone measages—Ropealed.
Miscellaneous bonds—Tax repealed,
except mull bond of indemnity.
Certificates of damage and certificates
not otherwise specified—Repealed.
Charter party—Repealed.
Conveyance—Exempted below $3,000.
Above $i,500, 25 cents for each $500. in
accordance with the sonate action.
Telegraph messages—Tax repealed.
Insurance—Tux repealod ou all kinds
of insurance, in accordance witli the ac
tion of the house, the senate conferees
receding on all souate amendments.
Loates—Tax repealed.
Manifests tax—Repealed.
Mortgages—Repealed.
Steamer tickets—Tax repealed below
$50 in value and the rate fixed at 50
conts for each $50 in cost for that price
and over.
Protest—Tax repealed.
Warehouse receipts—Tax ropealed.
Proprietary medicines—Tax repealed
in accordance with house action, the
senato being disagreed to.
Perfumery and cosmitics—Tax re
pealed.
Chewing gntn—Tax repealed.
Legacies—Law modified so as to ex
clude from taxation legacies of charita
ble, religions, literary or educational
character.
The total reduction of the revenues as
made by the bill as agreed upon will
amount to about $I1,0*),000, as against
a reduction of $10,000,000 as passed the
house and $15.000,000as amended in the l
senate. The bill will take effect July 1 I
next. _____

Plot to Assassinate King of Italy |
Frustrated.
Rio m: Janeiro, March 2.—The po
lice have arrested here two Italiaus,
Cecirra and Donati, who sent a letter to
the king of Italy announcing that a con
spiracy had been formed to take his life.
Both prisoners denied at first that
they knew anything about the letter,
but the chief of police pressed them un
til they confessed. They said that a
man named Lavecehia. who has sailed
for Montevideo with the object of em
barking there for Genoa, had planned
to put dynamite beneath the Quirinal
and explode the palace.
The Bra/.iiiau authorities immediately
cabled to Rome and Genoa. The chief
of police of Genoa replied that Lavec
chia had been arrested.
New Transport Ship.
San Francisco, March 2.—The Brit
ish tramp steamer Samoa has been pur
chased by the government, and $200,u0<3
will be spout in fitting her up fur trans
port service. When the vessel has been
refitted she will be able to carry ovei
2,000 soldiers.
Shot by a Constable.
Roanoke, Ala., March 2.—Oscar Stitt
was shot and seriously if not fatally
wounded by H. J. White, at Stitt’i
bouse, near Wahadkee, in this county,
today. White is a constable and ths
difficulty occurred about levying an ex
