Mr. Hardy is a conductor on the
Seaboard and was out of the city.
Mrs. Hardy, who was very seriously
ill, was carried from the burning build
ing before it fell in.
The fire was discovered about 3.30
o’clock by a young man, a boarder,
who occupied a second floor room.
Ho was nearly suffocated, and barely
escaped with his life. All of his cloth
ing and effects were lost, except what
he donned in hasty flight.
The Hardy’s lost all of their furni
ture and household goods, though this
was insured for $1,000. There was $000
on the dwelling house.
Two hundred dollars in bills, drawn
from the bank Friday, was burned,
along with Mrs. Hardy’s trunk.
The fire department responded to
the alarm and covered the distance of
a mile quickly, but the building was
already ablaze from top to bottom and
could not be saved. A stiff wind was
blowing, and firebrands were carried
nearly a half mile away.
The house was remote from other
buildings, else the damage might have
been greater.

In addition to the liquor tax there
are several other taxes which will be

& FORTUNE FOR A PLANTATION.
Fifty Thousand Dollars Paid For a
Cotton Farm.
Not many Americus people who had
fifty thousand dollars would put it in
one cotton plantation, but Mr- L. F.
Humber, of Columbus, has done this.
He has just returned from Mississippi,
where he went a few days ago to look
after his extensive farming interest in
that state. Mr. Humber, like Colonel
W. L. Tillman, believes in the fertile
acres of Mississippi, and has been
steadily increasing his investments
there. On his recent trip he made per-
haps the biggest investment of all, for,
in conjunction with a well known Co
lumbus business man, he bought a
$50,000 farm. It is said that tha place,a
ependid plantation, is worth more than
this, but he and his friend secured it
at *50,000—rather a good round sum
for individuals to put into farm lands.
It is understood that $50 per acre was
paid for the plantation.
“wet” counties pay a large revenue

of twelve months in the chaingang,
may decide to don the stripes instead
of lighting the case.
However, he has not yet announced
just what he will do. He is in a box,
and his monumental nerve is less ap
parent than heretofore.
The unexpected turn ol affairs was
calculated to unnerve him.
Should Kline raise $375 necessary to
pay out of jail he will be immediately
handed over to officers for trial else
where, either in Florida or Alabama.
A term of six months in jail is one al
ternative in his sentence.
If appealed to the supreme court the
case could not be reached in several
months.
Until convicted of the crime charg
ed Sheriff Bell was quite considerate of
Kline, allowing him to eat at his own
table, bat now he is back in a cage and
getB the same fare given the other pri
soners there.
Kline's recolleotions of Americas'
hospitality will be far from pleasant.

Former Resident of Ellaville Takes
His Life.
News of the tragic death of R. E.
Elliott, received here yesterday morn
ing, was quite a shock to the, many
AmericuB friends of the unfortunate
young man who, tired of life, ended
his unhappy career at Folsom's Hotel
in Atlanta by taking poison. Mr.
Elliott was for several years editor of
the News at Ellaville and quite popular
there as in Americas, whore he came
frequently on business. His death was
deliberately planned, as evidenced by
the contents of a note addressed to Dr.
Burt, directing the disposition of his
body. No cause for the rash act can
be assigned by his friendBin Americas.
Mr. Elliott was 34 years of age and
unmarried.
horror of the whole orthodox world,
has, by speech and writing, unceasingly
striven to separate himself from all com-
munion with tlio orthodox church, and
this not only clandestinely, but openly
and in the knowledge of all persons.
All attempts to dissuade him from this
conduct have proved without avail.
Consequently, the orthodox church no
longer considers him to bo one of its
members and cannot regard him
as such so long ns he does not become
reconciled to the church. We pray the
Lord to restore him to the comprehen
sion of the truth. We pray, O Merciful

sinner, to hear us, have mercy on him
aud restore him to the holy church.

A. MOST WONDERFUL CURE.
A Grand Old Lady Give. Her Experience.
Mrs, Thankful Orilla Hurd lives in the beautiful village of Brighton,
Livingston Co., Mlcb. This venerable and highly respected lady was born in
the year 1812, the year of the great war. In Hebron, Washington Co., New
York. She came to Michigan In 1810, the year of "Tippecanoe and Tyler
too " All her faculties are excellently preserved, and possessing a very re
tentive memory, her mind is full of interesting reminiscences of her early
life, of the early days of the Slate of Michigan and the interesting and re
markable people she' has met, and the stirring events of which she was a wit
ness. But nothing In her varied and manifold recollections are more mar
velous and worthy of attention than are her experiences In the use of
JOHNSTON’S SARSAPARILLA. Mrs. Hurd inherited a tendency and pre
disposition to scrofula, that terribly destructive blood taint which has cursed
and Is cursing the lives or thousands and marking thousands more os vic
tims of the death angel. Transmitted from generation*to generation, it U
found In neary every family in one form or another. It may make Its ap
pearance In dreadful running sores, in unsightly swellings In the neck or
goitre, or in eruptions of varied forms. Attacking the mucous membrope, it
may be known as catarrh in the head, or developing in the lungs It may be,
and often Is, the prime cause of consumption.
Speaking of her case, Mrs. Hurd says: “I was troubled for many years
with a bad skin disease. My arms an<j limbs would break out In a mass of
sores, discharging yellow matter. My neck began to swell and became very
unsightly in appearance. My body was covered with scrofulous eruptions..
My eyes were also greatly Inflamed and weakened, and they pained me very
much. My blood was in a very bad condition and my head ached severely
at frequent intervals, and I had no appetite. I had sores also in my ears. I
was in a miserable condition, I had tried every remedy that had been recom
mended, and doctor after doctor bad failed. One of the best physicians in
the state told me I must die of scrofulous consumption, as Internal abccsses
were beginning to form. I at length was told of Dr. Johnston, of Detroit, and
his famous Sarsaparilla. I tried n bottle, more as an experiment than any
thing else, ns I had no faith in it, and greatly to my agreeable surprise, I
began to grow better. You can be sure I kept on taking it. I took a great
many bottles. But I steadily improved until I became entirely well. All the
sores healed up, all the bad symptoms disappeared. I gained perfect health,
and I have never been troubled with scrofula since. Of course an old lady
of 83 years is not a young woman, but I have had remarkably good health
since then, and I firmly believe that JOHNSTON’S SARSAPARILLA Is the
greatest Wood purifier and the best medicine In the wide world, both for
scrofula and ns a spring medicine.” This remarkably Interesting old lady did
not lok to be more than sixty, and she repeated several times, “I believe my
life was saved by JOHNSTON’S SARSAPARILLA.”
