The Drummer Dons Bracelets and
Taxes Yesterday.
Sheriff Bell and Collector Dunn bad
ciouey to burn yesterday, though it is
not recorded that any of the lucre was
consigned to the lurid dames.
Bat there was a rush upon the part
of delinquents to pay taxes.
For the little hatch of 2,000 execu
tions, issued some days ago by Collec
tor Dunn, had begun to stir the tardy
ones and they came forward in droves
to square the little accounts.
Scores of levies had been made by
Sheriff Bell and Depnty Gatewood the
day before, with happy effect from a
financial standpoint. It tamed a
stream of.brignt dollars into the
exchequer.
Some people dielike to pav taxes
when due and will invariably wait un
til the execution is issued against their
property, which of course increases the
amount due.
Thousands of dollars is thus due the
state and Sumter county.
The flfas are for small amounts,
many of them, a large number being
against negroes for same ranging from
|2 to 310, though not a few whites owe
considerable sums. Sheriff Bell will
be obliged to oontinue levying upon
property until the executions, are
settled.

The many friends of former Fire
Chief Tom Smith, of the Americus de
partment, will regret to learn that he is
now totally blind and without any
hope of regaining his vision. The in
formation of his affliction was con
veyed in a telegram yesterday from bis
wife to his brother, Officer W, D.
Smith, and stated that when he awoke
yesterday morning the last vestige of
vision was gone. Mr, Smith's eyes
had been in a precarious state for some
time, the sight of one having been de
stroyed nearly two years ago and that
of the other greatly impaired. In Jan
uary he gave up the prsition of fire
chief, and with his family and sister

Goes to the Gang
Albert L. Kline bade adieu to Ameri
cus yesterday, after an enforced etay
of a month here, and wearing a neat
fitting gray suit and pair of steel hand-
cufls went to tbe convict camp to serve
a term of twelve months.
It was the final chapter in a sensa
tional court trial here.
Kline goes to Fleming’s camp, near
Bainbridge where, it is said, he will
chip turpentine boxes during his “lit
tle vacation off the road.”
As is well knoWD, Kline worked off
a worthless draft for $75 at the Bank of
Southwestern Georgia here some time
ago. He was tried last week npon the
charge of cheating and swindling, and
easily convicted.
Kline’s conviction was a great sur
prise to him. It was the first, after
many efforts.
The bravado and monumental nerve
exhibited during hie committal trial,
conducting with the astuteness of a
professional lawyer his own case, made
him an unique figure in the courtroom
here.
This spirit had borne him out of pre
vious 8crapes, no doubt, but it didn’t
go in Americas, aDd Kline's convic
tion followed.
Judge Crisp sentenced the gay dralt
writer to a term of twelve mouths m
the chaingang. six mouths in j til, or
pay $300, in addition to restoring the
375 gotten of the bank here.
It waB a horrible shock. At no oth
er place where he had cashed little
drafts had his victims sent him to the
chaingang, though they tried to do it.
Americus proved the Waterloo of Fi
nancier Kliue.
Yesterday the chaingaug guard came
to take him to the camps.
He was given a shave and haircut a
the jail, and but for the presence of
the bright steel wristlets one would
not have snppoeed him a prisoner un
der sentence.
Kline said that he had enough silk
hats and evening dress suits at Home,
where he was first arrested, to last him
five years. But dress suits will not be
stylish where he will reside for the
next twelve months.
Even this bright morning he may
have on the conventional garb so gen-
erally worn at Fleming's.

Few Escaped Who Attempted to De
fraud It.
If anyone ever rubbed up against the
Bank of Southwestern Georgia in a
criminal way and esoaped punishment
the fact is not a matter of record, Not
a iew who tried it are wearing stripes,
as this bank makes it a rule to prose
cute all suoh to the extent of tho law.
One Davenport, who attempted
count tae cash between suns, is doing
a twenty year j rb in the mines. An
other white man went up for seven
years for forgery. Two negroes who
tried the same little game last year are
now wearing stripes, while Albert
Kline, white, is the latest addition to
the bank’a chaingang “colony”. In
thus prosecuting criminals the bank
performs a public service which is ap
predated.
