Scarcely More Than 1-500 Bales In
the Warehouses.
MAN? FARMERS SOLD RECENTLY
"Weary of Waiting for Higher Price
They Closed Out and are Busy
Making Another Crop-Local Mar
ket Little Above 8c-
The recent perpendicular slump in
ootton values had the effect of very
greatly reducing the stock carried in
the Amencue warehouses,and just now
there arejperhaps less than 1,500 bales
held in the six warehouses here.
This was the estimate given the
Times Recorder yesterday by a cotton
man, and is about correct.
Not a few farmer?,tired ot holding for
• better price and fearing a further de
cline, closed ont their holdings the
past week at prices ranging about eight
cents or better.
One warehouse reported yesterday
the sale of 500 bales the past week, and
some of the other houses here probably
sold as much. From a stock of 4,000
bales held at the beginmngof theyear,
not more than 1,500 bales remain.
Just what will be done with this re
mains an interesting question.
It is owned by merchants and farm
ers who are perfectly able to carry it
. indefinitely, but will it bo the part
of wisdom to do this now '
With the great depression in the tex
tile world and curtailment of product
ion,the market continues to sag, and
ranges a little above the eight cent fig
ure? In the Americus market 8J cents
was the best paid yesterday.
In many of the Bmall towns in this
section there are goodly stocks of
cotton. .
In some of these places, it is said,
local merchants bought largely of spot
cotton when prices ranged about 10
cents, expecting it to be worth 1-} or
* 15 cents in the spring. Many hun
dred bales are thus held in south
Georgia.
And the owners of the cotton may
find it a bad investment in the end.
Appears to Have Collapsed, Nothing
Heard Now.
Is Americus going to have that great
fertilizer factory, the building of which
was announced with a flourish of trum
pets several months ago,and repeatedly
played on the soft pedal at short in
tervals since. It has been asserted
that the Yirginia-Carolina Chemical
Co., would certainly rebuild its acid
chambers hefe this spring and would,
at the same time, greatly increase the
capacity of its plant. Weeks revolve
into months and there is, apparently,
no indicatioa of a beginning of the
work. An immense q uantity of guano,
possibly 2-5,000 to 40,000 tons, have
been sold the farmers in this territory
this season, and at leaBt half of this
Bhould have been made in the factory
in Americas. It is hoped that the V-
C. people have not entirely abandoned
the idea of rebuilding their plant here,
as they have a good nuolous to begin
with, but if they will not stay in the
field there will he a fine opening here
for a local company to build and oper
ate a fertiliser plant.

Staple Articles Sold In Abundance In
Americus.
While the farm wagons may go out
of Americus loaded with guano the fact
that they come here laoded with some
thing better is none the less noticeable
and more worthy of mention. Just now
the farmers about AmericuB are selling
to merchants here thousands of Lush-
els of potatoes, wagon loads of mta
and hay, barrels of syrup and other
farm products that yield good cash
prices. Yesterday not less than adoz-
en farm wagons, all' well loaded with
meat, com, hay or potatoes, were to be
seen here, one farmer selling a gro
cery house 200 bushels potatoes for
1100 cash or trade. Maybe they are
going to plant lots of cotton this year
bnt the farmers of this county and
section have food supplies to do it with
in abundance.
country negroes are numbered among
the victims of a pair of very shrewd
road agents.
Two white men, well dressed and
possessing persuasive eloquence calcu
lated to arouse the cupidity of the un
bleached rustic, have been working the
farming districts near Americas re
cently, selling goods of all kinds to
negroes on the installment plan.
Baggies, wagons, pianos, clothing,
watches, sewing machines and, in fact,
any article that might bo suggested
was “sold” by these agents.
'1 he plan of procedure was to tako a
negro's order for anything in the
world he wanted, provided he made a
cash payment, this being regulated by
the amount he had.
No order was turned dowr; the
“agents” sold everything wanted ^
One old darkey ordered a new red
wagon, and handed over a solid silver
watch in lien of a cash payment. Anoth
er paid 82 on a suit of clothes, while
numerous others bought bicycles,
elocks, sewing machines, Bhotguus and
other artioles for which they had nn
need at all.
Tho "goods” were to be delivered at
the expiration of ten days.
Time was up Friday, anil as the
agents did not show up, of course, the
victimized blacks raised a hue and ory
and came to town to tell their troubles
to the police.
Farmers on whose plantations these
negroes work say that the “agents”
evidently made a rich haul near Ameri
cuB, and in one district in particular
reaped a harvest of dollars. Even in
telligent negroes witli plenty of money
were caught in the game,
Tho world ie full of fakirs, white
and black, and it appears that none of
