" 0M ” 14 ' BAD WRECK ON
THE PLANT SYSTEM
Tlie consumption of sugar in the
world is something immense—almost
beyond computation in pounds, and
when we speak of it we employ the
word tons to express our idea in regard
to it. This consumption is daily in
creasing at leaps and bounds.
The coming sugar territory lays to
the south of Macon from about this
latitude to the gulf and to the south
Atlantic coast. It will be found when
the experiments are made — and made
they will be in the near future — that
the Southern part of this state and
Middle Florida is to become a great
sugar producing section. It is already
know that the low lands in this area
named will produce cane containing
two per cent, sucrose more than the
Louisiana cane, and that the high or
ndgelands, while they will not yield
as many tons per acre, will produce
four per cent, of sucrose more than the
Louisiana product. It is also known
that fresh pine lands without manure
will yield from fifteen to twenty tons
of cane per acre.
These facts are enough to guarantee
the success of sugar mills in South
(leorgia pitched on a large scale. They
will pay handsome dividends on the
money invested, and they will develop
a sure and paying money crop for the
farmers, for thero is no surer crop that
grows than the cane crop. Millions of
tuns of sugar can be produced in Houth
Georgia between the Savannah and the
Chattahoochee rivers. We have no
doubt that the railroads can be induced
to tlx a very low rate for the transpor
tation of cane in bulk to the mills, cen
trally located. We have no doubt that
the day is not distant when from Sa
rannah to Columbus, and from Fernan
dina to Bainbndge sugar mills will be
almost as common as pnblic gins. Why
not ? The possibilities are in the soil
the capacity is in the farmer to make
the sucrose; the capital is plentiful and
it must and will come to the field where
it can be most profitably employed.
This is no idle dream. It is a ma
ture and deliberate conclusion. Watch
it —Macon Telegraph.

SA8SING SAM JONES.
Really we fail to seo the justice in
the action of a Georgia municipal court
which fined a man for rising in a con
gregation to eay “that is false” when
the Rev. Sam Jones announced from
the pulpit that every man who drinks
is a cur. If Mr.Jones has license to go
about abasing people and calling them
curs and hog and such like, we know
of no good reason why those attacked
by him should he forbidden to retaliate
in kind. It is certainly false to say
that every man who takes a drink is a
cur, and we rather admire the free citi
zou of Georgia who had the nerve to
get on hiB feet and express his opinion

LET SOMETHING GOOD BE SAID
When ever the fair fame of friend or foe
The shadow of disgrace shall fall, Instead
Of words of blame, or proof of thus and so,
Let something Rood be said.
Forget not that no fellow beln? yet
May fall so low but love may lift Its head;
Even the cheek of shame with tears !s wet
If something good be said.
So generous heart may vainly turn aside
In ways of sympathy; no soul so dead
But may awaken strong and glortded
If something good be said.
And so I charge ye by the thorny crown
And by the cross on which the Savior bled,
And by your own soul's hope of fair renown.:
Let something good be said.
