Atlanta, March 22.—Commissioner
O. B. Stevens of the department of ag
riculture has gone to southwest Georgia
on a mission of importance.
Reports have been received recently
to the effeot that a good deal of contra
band gnano was being brought into the
state from Alubama by way of the Chat
tahoochee river. These roports soon
reached the agricultural department,
and w-ith its usual vigilance it began an
investigation.
To prosecute this investigation and
determine to what extent the law is
being violated was the object cf Com
missioner Stevens’ trip. He proposed,
it is understood, to look thoroughly into
the matter and determine whether such
illegal shipments are heiug made into
the state aud to what extent.
