AMERICAS, GA., APRIL. 5, 1801,
Things have boon so quiet at Manila
that Kansas concluded to play her
trump card, Gen. Funston.
The Congressional Record is no
quitter. It is still struggling with
last session’s flow of eloquenco.

Editor Dick Grubb, of the Darien
Gazette, says that he has a high regard
for Mr. Bryan but he would like him
still better if ho would quit trying for
the third term nomination.
The Daily News, of Meridian, says,
very aptly and properly, iu discussing
the question now being detailed, of re
stricting acreage of the coming cotton
crop, by a concerted movement of the
farmers with a view to maintain a high
price for cotton iu 1001-02, that there is
one way and only one, by which cotton
production can be restricted, and that
is through the indirect means of niak-
other crops more prolitable. We
believe that when the South fully real
izes the economy in raising at home
the things consumed at home;when we
row ottr own bread, pack our owu
meat, manufacture the cotton we grow,
convert into usable articles our wealth
of timber, when, iu short, we create a
market for other products than cotton,
the laud and labor gi' en to^the sur
plusage of the staple will be diverted
to more profitable employment and]tho
cotton acreage will bo normally and
naturally diminished.
WHY MANY YOUNG MEN FAIL.
One trouble with many young men
who go out iu business is, they try to
do too many things at once. The re
sult is that they don’t know as muoh
as they ought to about aDy one thing,
and they naturally fall. The trouble
with young meu who work on salaries
is that they are always afraid of doiDg
more thau they are paid for. They
don’t enter into their work with the
right spirit. To got on and be appre
ciated a young man must do more
thau he is paid for. When he does
something his employer has not
thought of he shows that ho is valua
ble. Mon are always willing to pay

not approached in this city—nor are the pr.ees.

INTERESTING HOBNOBBINQ
Relations Between tier many and Italy
Are Cordial.
Berlin, April 8 —The Lokal Aozia-
ger understands that the conference be
tween the imperial chancellor. Conn!
Von Buelow, aud Signor ZauardelU,
the Italian premier, at Verona, yester
day, which was of considerable length,
was intended to remove the false im
pression created by insinuation;, in the
French press regarding the relations bo-
tween Italy aud Germany. The paper
interprets the meeting as presaging the
contiunauco of friendly relations be
tween the two countries nnd says that
the leave-taking of the two statesmen
was cordial
In offioial circles ir is admitted that
while the meeting arV’eroua was acci
dental, Signor Zutiardello being on hia
way to his country estate, the relations
between the two countries were dis
cussed. Senor Zaruadello, it is said,
gave entirely satislactory assurauces.
Tho Texas cotton growers have benn
called to meet for -the purpose of de
vising a plan for a reduction of the
cotton acreage. Prosident Peters, of
tho Cotton Growers’ Protective As
sociation of that state, assorts that if
tho acreage is iuceasod the price of
cotton will be below 0. cents next fall,
aud will consequent)- result in grent
financial calamity. The farmers
throughout the south should consider
this mattor carefully and act upon the
experience gained from the past. They
have tlioir welfaro iu their owu hands
in this respect. If they shall coniine
the production of cotton this yenr to
an amount not exceeding nine aud a
half or ten million bales, the crop will
bo prolitable to them, but if they plant
too largo an acreage aul the crop
reaches twelve million bales, tiny
cannot hope to receive a price that
will more than cover tho cost of pro
duction.

Southern commerce and progress must
languish, on account of the failure of
the rivers aud harbors bill, which was

Toulon, France, April 2 —There is
