The departure of the doctor from
Americus nearly two months ago and
his failure to return caused consider
able gossip at the time, and this was
not lessened as weeks wore on and
the doctor came not.
Thou it wbb that his office effects
were qniekly attached.
“Dr” Broaddus evidently did an im
mense business in the “healing art
during his brief sojourn here. Even
after his departure there came hun
dreds of letters addressed to “Tho

Farmers Made a Good Thing ot It
Last Season.
A thrifty and far sighted farmer ban
tered an Americas merchant yesterday
to swop off bacon for cotton, pound for
pound, tho meat to ho delivered dur
ing the year and the cotton to be
handel over next fall.
Bat the grocer smiled a takemefora-
dfool smile and declined.
Last spring he was picked up by this
same very gentle and unsophisticated
farmer, aud while it was a good trade
for both, the pork peddler will stay out
of the game this year.
They traded then on a pound for
pound basis, and while cotton staid at
10 cents and above the farmer steadily
sold his crop and pocketed the coin.
His meat bill was not then duo. It was
paid later with 8 cent cotton.
One of his neighbors, who made a
similar trade with a local merchant, got
seared and settled when cotton was at
11 cants, fearing that it was going to
15 cents. . . .
Meat is now worth 10 cents at retail
and cotton only 8- cents. Next fall the
price of eotton maybe much less, hence
the unwillingness of the looal merchant
to swap hia 10 oent moat for eotton
whioh may bring only 5 cents.
