THE 1MERICUS WEEKLY T1MES-RECORDER: FRIDAY, APRIL £, mi.
COUNCIL MAY DERIVE EEVENUE
from Flourishing Oat Patch On the
Avenue.
A year or two ago the city council
branched out into farming as a aide is
sue, and the sale of oats from the flour-
ishing fields of the deserted soldiers’
camp did mnch to bolster up tbetreas-
nry, even then not overflowing.
Another opportunity now awaits the
aolons, for portions of Cotton avenue
are pictures of emerald hue. Where
the sidewalks have fallen down a crop
of "volunteer” oats have grown up,
and will soon be ripe nnto the harvest.
Many farmers in town yesterday de
clared they were the best oats in the
oonnty, and pnt a high estimate upon
the probable yield. The harvest will
be signaliaed with a free barbecue, and
it is likely that the gubernatorial can
dldates will be invited to meet here in
joint debate at that time. There'll be
no rye for them, but we will have oats.
POLICE THREATEN
AMERICUS VAGS.
Chief Wheeler Sava loiterers Must

CRUSADE TO RROIN TOMORROW
FIVE REGISTER WITH ORDINARY
To ISell Cigarettes and Alcohol In
Sumter.
There are but five places in Hnmter
county including Americas, where al
cohol and cigarettes can be purchased,
aooording to the list of dealers who,
nnder the law, have registered in the
office of the ordinary,
Every dealer in these articles is re
quired to register in January,
The list shows that five bare done so
to date, and the presumption is that
there are no others. It there are oth
ers they should register.
People in other special lines of busi
ness are likewise required to registrar,
and a half dozen here have done so.
Two or three, registering as Confeder
ate veterans, are not required to pay a
speoial lioenee tax.
A penalty is imposed upon any who
fail to comply with this law.
BROOKS FRIENDS ABE GRIEVED
At Verdict Which May Break His
Neck.
During the trial in Savannah this
week of Henry Brooks, an Amerieus
negro, for the murder of Officer Fender,
the greatest interest has been aroused
among his relatives and friends here,
who will grieve at the verdict which
may oonaign him tn the gallows.
Brooks has not lived here in several
years, though he is well remembered
by many. He was defended by Judge
Twiggs, himself a former residont of
' Amerieus.
And Vagabonds Here Must Explain
How They Live—All Found With
out a Job Must Get One or Answer
to Charge of Vagrancy.
Police Chief Wheeler issues an of
ficial ukase in which he declares that
Americos is to freed from the gangs of
vagrants and loiterers that hang about
town and do nothing, a menace to soci
ety and a danger to the entire com
munity.
Chief Wheeler says they mnst show
good papers or else walk the plank.
And if be carries out bis present in
tentions there’ll be work for the po
lice, for as many Idlers roam the streets
of Amerions as of any other city in the
state.
And Chief Wheeler says he Is in
dead earnest. Beginning tomorrow, be
says, every idle person seen upon the
streets and every suspicions oharaoter
must show the police evidenoe that he
has a job. The polioe will not be Aim
flammed, either.
Unless a suspect can measure up to
the police requirements he will have to
be measured for a striped suit immedi
ately.
This good work is started not a day
too soon, either.
Amerieus is afflicted with a large
class of vagrants; men who refuse to
work at any price and live at the ex
pense of others. Instances are cited
where they refused work here recent
ly at a dollar a day.
The progress of Chief Wheeler's cru
sade will be noted from c ay to day
in The Times-Becorder, whioh ap
plauds his purpose. Let him clean ont
the vagrants hero, -

Nt Dealer Hat Rush of Business
—This Year.
:Ji T. O. Hargis, the veteran stook
tfealor, said here yesterday that he had
sold this season already 3,800 horses
and mules, and was not yet' throngb.
He makes Atlanta headquarters at
prosoot, though he comes frequently
to Amerions to dispose of stook. The
sales made by Mr. Hargis, when tak
en with that of aoores of other dealers,
would indioate that farmers generally
bad "jined the cavalry.”
DOWNING IN AMERICUS PRISON
White Prisoner From Dooly Brought
Over Here.
O. L. Downing, a well known resi
dent of Dooly county, was brought to
Amerieus from Vienna yesterday and
placod in Sumter’s jail. He was con'
vioted at the recent term of Dooly court
of the killing of Dr. W. W. Joiner
several montha ago and aeutenoed to a
life term in the penitentiary. A motion
for a new trial haa been made, and
pending this Mr. Downing will be kept
in the jail here.
CALLED MEETING OF FARMERS.
Those of Sumter Will Discuss Cotton
Acreage.
Mr. Thomas B. Hooks, president of
the Snmter oonnty branch of the Cot*
ton Growers Protective Association,
was in Americas yesterday. He calls
an important meeting oi the loeal as
sociation for Saturday next at city hall,
convening at 10 o’clock, and nrgea ail

ton next fall to attend.
GUIT AMERICUS FOR OKLAHOMA
Where They Will Make Their Home
In Future.
After a residence of many years in
Amerieus Mr. John L. Harper and
family gc to Oklahoma City to reside.

children going direct to Oklihoms

I who will regret their departure.’
There are thousands of men
and women, as well as ever,
with holes in their lungs: con
sumption stopped.
Consumption stopped is con
sumption cured. What does
it?
Some change in the way of
life and Scott’s emulsion of
cod-liver oil.
With the emulsion, give
some attention to circum
stances ; change from a dark
damp close room to a sunny
dry airj’ one; from city to coun
try ; from'hard to an easy life;
indoors to out.
A hole in the lungs once
healed is no worse than a too-
tight waist or waistcoat.
Take the emulsion, and give
it a chance to heal the wound.
MILLIONS OF MELONS PLANTED,
Grower* About America* Will Raiie
Canteloupes
That meet delicate and delicious of
melons, the csnteloupe, will be raised
in greatest abundance about Americne
this year. In fac', there, will be "mil.
lions of melons” as local trackers,
planting for shipping purposes, will
put in quite a large acreage here.
Several have planted already, while
others are just preparing laud and dia,
cussing among themselves the best va
rieties of seed.
While the “RockylFord” is. esteem
ed ae a fine melon for shipping, prob
ably the best variety for this purpose,
it is not as much favored in the Ameri
cas market as other varieties as easily
grown here.
However, a large acreage will be
planted in the Bocky Fords,
One grower stated yesterday that be
had already planted sixteen acres in
Boeky Fords and wonld plant more.
Last season his cantaloupe crop netted
him 8400 per car on track at his ship
ping point, And he shipped several
carloads of them, too.
Other growers whom he meniloned
received (2 net for crates holding three
pecks. This beats any other farming
heard of here.
The cantaloupe is a fine shipper, and
is always in demand.
There was hardly a time last year
wheu the local market was glutted, the
fine varieties always being in demand
and at good prices. It is a surer crop
than peaches, ae the young vines come
on long afterj,Jack Frost has gone
North.
And the luscious cautelonpe will
bring many bright dollars to Georgia
this year.
We’ll send you a little to try, If you like.

FH0SFECT OF ABUNDANT CROP.
Growers Still Believe the Peach Crop
Is Safe.
There ia little doubt among local
fruitgrowers regarding the prospect
of an abundant crop, and only onedan-
ger, the April full moon, confronts
them. Up about Fort Valley fruit
growers ere equally hopeful, The
Leader say* that should^ the poach
crop pass the tali moon period ot April
3d without injury, the growers can be
gin buying orates and getting ready
(or shipping. A large yield will then
be fully assured as far as human ob
nervation teaehes and nothing short oi
a miracle will prevent.

TENEMENT HORROR
IN NEW YORK CITY
Mother and Two Children
Perish In Fire.
THEY LIVED ON TOP FL00H
Father and One Child Reached the
Ground in Safety—Kscape of Other
Three Cut OfT lly the Ruthless
Flames and Suffocating Smoke.
New York, March 30—Mrs. Esther
Cohen and two of her children, Benja
min, aged 5, and Sophia, 1 year old,
perished by the barniug of a 5-story
tenement house at Dclancey and Nor
folk streets early today. In the panic
which occurred mothers lost their rea
son and threw their children from the
windows and fire escapes to the street
below. That all were caught by the po
lice and firemen and escaped serious in
jury seems almost a miracle. Follow
ing is a list of the injured:
Max Salisbury, burned about hands
and body.
John J. Reardon, detective, cut on
hands and face by failing glass.
Michael Oestfeldt, suffering from
shock and contusions.
There were 13 families in the house.
The fire was discovered at 3:30 by tbe
wife of the janitor, who aroused her
husband, and together they went to the
front of the house, giving the alarm.
Tbe Ill-Fated Cohens.
On the top floor of the tenement lived
Morris Cohen, his wife and their chil
dren, Sophia, Harry and Benjamin. The
flames were already through tho roof
wheu they were awakened. Escape by
the hallway was cut off. Groping
through the smoke to the window,
Cohan picked up the boy Harry, and
calling to his wife to follow, got out on
the fire escape and started to descend.
Mrs. Cohen carried the baby in her
arms, and the boy Benjamin followed.
Out on the fire escape the flames and
smoke which burst from the windows
below them separated them from their
family, and only Cohen and the boy
reached the street.
When the firemen were able to reach
the top floor they found the bodies of
Mrs. Oohen and the other two children,
blackened and burned, lying on the fire
escape lauding.
The damage by the fire is estimated
at $10,000.
SUICIDED IN PRISON CELL
SEVEN RUNNING SORES CURED
Johnston’s Sarsaparilla
QUART BOTTLES.
THE GREAT SPRING mEDICINE.
JOHNSTON’S SARSAPARILLA as a Blood Food and Nsrve Energizer. Is the
greatest SPRING MEDICINE ever discovered. It comes as a rich blessing from
heaven to the "worn out," the run down, the overworked and debilitated. That •• tired
leellng," those "sinking spe’ls," the languor and despondency which arise from badly nour
ished nerves, from thin, vitiated blood and an underfed body, vanish as if by a magic
spell. The weariness, lassitude and nervous prostration which accompany the spring,
time and the heat of summer, are conquered and banished at once. For every form of
neurasthenia, and all ailments of tho brain and nerve, insomnia, hysteria and nervousness
generally, it Is almost a specific. It furnishes the very elements to rebuild worn-out nerve
tissues. It teeds brain, nerve centers and nerves, calming and equalizing their action; it
makes rich, red, honest blood. Newness of life, new hope, new strength follow Its faith
ful use. It makes the weak strong, and the old young again.
It was the antlqusted (but now happily exploded) method In the good old times, to
treat Salt Rheum, Scrofula, Cancer and other troublesome disorders arising from
BLOOD TAINT with powerful alteratives, such ss mercury, arsenic and other mineral
agents. It was expected by this treatment that the poison could be killed while the blood
was left to course through its channels holding in its circulation the specific germs of the
disease. But In this way, every pari oi the body became more or less diseased. Noth
ing can be more terrible than a horribly destrucflva blood faint. It not only attacks viru
lently the different structures of the body, but many times the bones are honey-combed
and destroyed. It often seeks out tho nerves and spinal cord, and again It will bring de
cay and death to some vital organ, as the kidneys, liver or stomach. There Is only one
scientific method for the cure of bipod taint. That Is, PURIFICATION I Every particle
of the blood must be removed through the execretory channels, the lungs, kidneys, bowels,
liver and skin. " First pure, then peaceable." The great restorative, reconstructive and
vitalizer of the blood, JOHNSTON’S SARSAPARILLA, not only radically and ex
haustively removes the taint, but also removes ail mercury, calomel and other minerals,
and fills the veins and arteries with the ruby, glowing current of vitality. "The blood is
the life." Good health means pure blood. The old and reliable remedy, JOHNSTON’S
SARSAPARILLA, is universally regarded as tho greatest Blood Purifier ever discov
ered. This fact Is now established beyond question or cavil.

A London fog Is en expensive visita
tion. A day of it. counting the day at
eight liours. Is estimated to cost any
thing from £50,000 to £100.000 In hard
cash. No small proportion of this goes
to tile gas and electric light companies,
which linve to supply about n third
more power than usual. But there nre
also the railways. Fog signaling is
expensive. At Claphani Junction alone
£50 lias been spent by n single railway
company during a day’s fog in extra
