And Consequently the Votere Didn’t
See the Neceisitv for Turning ont
in Strength—Will Assume New Du
ties Next Saturday.
Yesterday’s election for clerk of
court was about tbe quietest political
affair ever witnessed in the county,
and bat for an occasional remark at
the conrthonso touching thereon tbe av
erage citizen would hardly have known
that an eleotion; was being held.
Avery light vote was cast at tbe
ooartbonse, perhaps 150, and this was
donbless the case at all of the country
preoinots. Probably less than 200
votes were polled at all. There was no
opposition |to Mr. Chambliss, hence
tbe light vote cast.
Clerk Chambliss and Deputy Clerk
Gatewood will probably assume the
duties of their new office next Satur
day, by which time the former’s com
mission will be signed by Gov, Candler
and forwarded here. That was the
date suggested yesterday.
And they will find the office in ex
cellent shape; neat and clean and with
papers all in place. Clerk Allen was
bnsy yesterday pu'ting the office in
good order.
This wsb easy, however, as it was
always in excellent condition,
Clerk Allen was brought up in the
clerk's office, praotically, his father,
the lamented Judge J. H. Alien, hav
ing held it continuously for over 27
years, while the sou was his efficient
and faithful deputy, practically doing
all the work in recent years.
He was most attentive to his duties,
always obliging and courteous, aud his
genial presence will be missed at tbe
oourthonse. He has other business
interests, however, to which be will
devote his attention.

EXECUTION AGAINST
CHURCH MEMBERS.
A Wholesale Levy In the Ranks ol
. Bethelites.
UNLESS .THEY SETTLE CLAIMS
In Recent Litigation a Bill of Costs
Was Made But Never Paid—Now
Execution is Issued Against Those
Who Brought Lawsuit.
Consternation little abort of pande
monium may reign today among tbe
rank and file making np one element
of the membership of Big Bethel Bap
tist church when Sheriff Bell, armed
with a double barrel, rapid fire execu
tion, starts upon tbe warpath.
The tail end of a protracted meeting
there will be nothing in comparison.
Tbe execution is already issued, and
there will be a robust bowl in 144 col
ored homes if he enters there and be*
gins making an inventory of dishes,
tabs, blankets and brio a-brac.
For 144 members of Biggest Bethel,
it is slleged, are responsible for the
costs incurred in a large-sized and sen*
sational lawsnit against their good
dominie, Pastor Mnnson, a year or two
ago, and tbe “little matter” has been
carelessly overlooked.
But “those who dance must pay the
piper,” and while these Bethelites are
not prize winners in a terpeicborean
souse, they must settle.
For already the little bill against
them has whiskers on it,
Tbe execution, a formidable docu
ment in appearancr, was issued yester
day in tbe office of tbe clerk of court,
and is directed against the goods aud
chattels of 144 devout Bethelites, each
of whom are mentioned by name in the
aforesaid breech loading fifa.
The pots and kettles of Sister Brown,
the bed-spreads of Sister Jones and
the family cat of Sister Smith are sub
ject to seiznre and sale, as are tbe ra
zors and guns of the brothers.
Forty dollars worth of these house
hold ornaments must come down.
Of course when the sheriff calls for a
showdown tbe coin will be forthcom
ing, but he is forced to make levies un
less this is done. The story leaked
out with the raindrops yesterday, and
impromptu conferences among the
Bethelites were held on every street
corner.
And the chances are that in future
all differences will be adjusted in the
good old way, aud all will fight shy of
the courthouse.
