CHURCH HAS CALLED A PASTOR.
Pulpit of First Baptist May Soon Be
Filled
The membership of First Baptist
church has called Rev. R. E. Neigh
bour, of Dublin, Ga. to that pulpit.
This notion was taken Sunday morn
ing, aud a committee of live members
will today notify Mr. Neighbour of his
unanimous election and aek that he
acoept the call.
Mr. Neighbour preached here three
Sundays ago and favorably impressed
the church body and others who heatd
Ilia discourse.
The pulpit of this church has been
vacant for two months, Rev. S. 0.
Dean, for four years pastor of the
church, baviog resigned to go to Mis
sissippi. Since that time several able
ministers from different sections of
the stato have filled the pulpit there
through courtesy.
The church hopes that Mr. Neigh
bour will accept tho call here.

in Americas for throe days exhibiting
this bale, and has interest.e<l many

BURNED A HOTEL AND STORES.
Abbeville Had a Considerable Blaze
Yesterday.
Faseengers coming in on tbo Sea
board train yesterday reported a con
siderable fire at Abbeville, which oo-
ourred early in the day. Tne baggage
room of the Seaboard was destroyed,
together with a quantity of baggage.
The flames also devoured a frame ho
tel nearby, two stores and a saloon,
along with a part of tho contents of
each. The loss will probably approxi
mate 810,000, and la only partly cov
ered by insurance.
KILLING TROUT BY CONCUSSION.
Half Dozen Fine Ones Are Taken at
The Mill.
Many fine tront are exhibited daily
npon the streets here, and the manner
of their capture renders the sport cer
tain and interesting- A rifle is used
instead of a hook, tho fish being killed
by concussion. Rupert Baisdeu killed
six fine trout yesterday at Parker's
Mill, using only four cartridges. Three
of tho fish were killed with a single
shock of tho rifle.

Sheriff Finds Dozens of Them Paid
Already.
A month ago Tax - Collector Dnnn
turned over to Sheriff Bell a hatch of
perhaps two thonsaud fifaa issned
against tax defaulters, mostly for the
year lt)00. The officers went to work
and colleoted several hundred of the
fifas, hut in nnmerona instances where
they attempted to make levies the par
ties against whom the fifas were issued
would produce tax receipts, showing
that an error had been made some
where. Yesterday SUorift Bell went
upon another levying tonr, bnt after
presenting a dozen fifas, and having
eleven receipts for taxes drawn on him,
he bandied ap the entire lot of fifas,
perhaps a thousand, and turned them
back to the tax oolleotor’s office.

It is at this season that the little
crop mortgage finds its way to the
offiee of the clerk of court for record,
and within the past few days several
hundred have been entered upon the
big books there. Clerk Alien has re
corded more than a hundred this week
already, and the papers come in e
steady stream every day- These mort
gages are given principally by small
farmers and croppers and are for meat,
supplies and guano to be paid for next
fall.

A crowd of a dozen citizens with
heads bnnohed above a souttle hole on
Jaokeon street attracted mnoh atten
tion yesterday, and denizens of Cotton
avenue who had completed their day’i
work at ID a m. came np to investi
gate. Tbo "fishing fovor” bad spread,
and these citizens, who felt disinclined
to walk a mile to Mnckalee crook, were
fishing for big rats in the basement pf
a store. Hooks were baited with
cheese, and soveral gray whiskered
old rodents were yanked to tbo aide-
walk to tbo intense delight of the
‘‘fishermen 41 and the 381 onlookers
gathered abont the spot.

many rifles, is expected to surrender
shortly at Silting, in Cavite province.
