‘Captain Cook” better known in
Amerlcns, Georgia, as William Glover,
having been born and reared here, is
now the sensation in New York sport
ing circles. Glover, or Capt. Cook, as
he is generally known, long since ac
quired the phenomenal skill of walk
ing on the water, and once gave an ex
hibition of his prowess here. Jnst
now he is the admiration of New York
ers as he glides op and down the bay,
and baa annonnoed bis intention of
walking on the water to Coney Island,
ten miles away. Yesterday’s Journal
contained a fine piotnre of Capt. Cook,
wearing his canoe shoes.

FOR OLD AGE
To the old, as to babies, the
even balance of health is more
important than anything else
in the world. The possible
health, in age, is not high and
strong; it is only even.
There is no end, but death,
to the trouble that comes of
its loss.
It ought to be watched like
a baby’s.
Their future is short; but oh
how it turns on comfort I on

wrinkles of pain or of long se
rene enjoyment 1

It is notoriously trne that little care
oftimea is taken of cotton held in store,
the bales being allowed to remain oat
in the weather for months, and oftimea
they stand in paddles of water until
rotten.
A lot bongbt by an Americas firm
yesterday was in snch condition.
The lot consisted of 300 bales, and
was stored in a little railroad village in
south Georgia where it had been held
for eix months.
It cost the owner ten cents, and he
was going to hold it nntil the price
reached fifteen. BeoenUy he decided
that H might be best to close out the
lot at 8 cents rather than wait longer
for the advance.
Bat the cotton was not as good as
when he stored it away ont in the
weather last October.
The winter rains had damaged it
fearfully, and it was necessary that
each bale be picked over carefully.
This resulted in a total loss in weight
of 30,000 lbs. of euttOD.
This was an average of 150 ibs. to
the bale, a total of 30,000 lbs. net loss
At 10 cts. per pound this wonld have
meant a loss of 83,000, but there was
the diilerence of 810 per bale in the
cost price, 10 cts. and that at which it
was sold. In the aggregste the own
er lost some $4,500 or $5,000.
And this on a lot of 300 bales only.
Just suppose he had held a thousand,
and bad been as csreless in storing it.
Nothing Has Been Done Towards
Building Mill.
That mammoth fertilizer plant which
the Virginia-Carolina Company was
going to build in Americas appears to
have gone the way of the 1,787 cotton
factories projeoted doring the past de
cade. Six or eight months ago the
company gave positive assurance that
it wonld rebuild the bnrned acid cham
bers and restore generally tho plant
here, the work to begin early in the
Spring. Spring bas happened all
right enough, but the V-0 does'nt
happen to have done a thing, ao far as
wo are informed, towards making a
start on the new faotory. Many citi
zens, some of them in olose touch
with the company, do not bellevo now
that tho plant will bo restored for a
long time, if at all. This seems a mag-
nifieent field for a fertilizer faotory
and surely some company, local or for
eign, will enter it at no distant date.
CHEAPER THAN STEALING THEM.
Snatchers of Umbrellas Have Chance
to Reform.
That largo element of Amoricus>
population who do not deem It wrong
to attaoh themselves to umbrellas be
longing to other people ehonld go to
Duncan’s store tomorrow and reform
Reoently he purchased at 00 oents on
the dollar a lot of 300 fine parasols and
umbrellas, mannfaoturer's samples,
and la going to spread them—on tho
bargain counter. These range in tsI-
ue from $1.23 to 83.00, but tomorrow
the entire lot will go on sale at $1.10
foroholce. Its ohoapor than stealing
them, so go to Dunoon's and prepare
for the flood.
A Lite and Death Fight.
Mr. W. A, Hlnoa of Manchester, la.,
writing of his almost miraculous osoapo

which ended In Consumption. I bad

soon die. Then I began to use Dr Kina's

An instance of where persistency
had its rich reward was given here
yesterday by the reoeipt of a bank
cheok tor 8350, the value of a carload
of peaohes shipped last July to a nor
thern concern. Thon no returns came,
bat instead a letter reciting tho fact
that the peaohes arrived in a bad state
and asking for a check to oover freight
charges. Instead of complying with
this "modest” request the frait grow
ers hired a lawyer and began an inves
tigation. The fault, it seems, lay with
a northern railroad, whioh failed to
make prompt delivery of the oar, and
yesterday the olatm of 8350 was paid.
VAGRANTS GONE GLIMMERING.
Perhaps, as None Have Been Arrest
ed Here.
A week ago it was announced that
war wonld be waged upon the idle and
shiftless negroes in Americas. Evi
dently they heeded the warning and
got beyond reach of the police, aa not
a single arrest and conviotion was
made dnnng the week. The only ar
rest made apon this charge was that of
Sleek Walker, who is employed by tho
city bill poster, and Jnstioe Graham
immediately discharged him for laek of
evidence. Bat the police are still oo
the lookout for vagrants.

Mr, T. B. Hooks, president o' the lo

of the meeting is considered. Borne

time, but the indications are that the

-The percentage of the increase is less
than in the previous decode. Depopu

THE GREAT SPRING MEDICINE.
JOHNSTON’S SARSAPARILLA as a Blood Food and Nerve Energizer, is tho
greatest SPRING MEDICINE ever discovered. It comes as a rich blessing from
heaven to the " worn out," the run down, the overworked and debilitated. That " tlrel
feeling,” those "sinking spells,” the languor and despondency which arise from badly nour
ished nerves, from thin, vitiated blood and an underfed body, vanish as If by a magic
spell. The weariness, lassitude and nervous prostration which accompany the spring.
Ume and the heat of summer, are conquered and banished at once. For every form of
neurasthenia, and all ailments of the brain and nerve, Insomnia, hysteria and nervousness
generally. It is almost a specific. It furnishes the very elements to rebuild worn-out nervs
tissues. It feeds brain, nerve centers and nerves, calming and equalizing their action: it
makes rich, red, honest blood. Newness of life, new hope, new strength follow Its faith
ful use. It makes the weak strong, and the old young again.
It was the antiquated (but now happily exploded) method In Ihe good old times, to
treat 5alt Rheum, Scrofula, Cancer and other troublesome disorders arising from
BLOOD TAINT with powerful alteratives, such as mercury, arsenic and other miners 1
agents. It was expected by this treatment that the poison could be killed while the blool
was left to course through its channels holding in Its circulation Ihe specific germs of the
disease. But in this way, every part of the body became more or less diseased. Noth
ing can be more terrible than a horribly deatructivo blood taint. It not only attacks viru
lently the different structures of the body, but many times the bones are honey-combei
and destroyed. I! often seeks out the nerves and spinal cord, and again It will bring de
cay and death to some vital organ, as the kidneys, liver or stomach. There Is only ^ce
scientific method for the cure of blood taint. That is, PURIFICATION I Every partlc>
of the blood must be removed through the execretory channels, the lungs, kldne— '
