Cassava is another important product
that can bo profitably raised in South
Georgia. Professor Stockbridgo of the
Florida Experiment Station says that
this plant furnishes an excellent feed
for stock as well as for mail. There aro
two species of the plant—one known as
the sweet, the other as the bitter cassava.
The former is tho one so highly recom
mended by Profossor Stockbridgo.
The sweet cassava, which is already
cultivated to a considerable extent in
Florida, has this supremo advantage
over the other spocies (tho bitter): that
it can be fed to stock in its natural state
without risk of harm, but with great
advantage. It is also a very palatable
table vegetable. It lias five-parted
leaves and longer roots, but generally
much lighter in weight than those of the
bitter cassava, which is such an impor
tant article of commerce in Brazil and
other South American countries.
The bitter cassava should never be
used for stock, becauso its sap contains
the highly poisonous hydrocyanic acid.
But this plant is also a very important
one in South America. Heat dissipates
the poisonous principle, and the concen
trated juice is used as tho basis of cassa-
veep tfnd other sauces, wliilo from the
sliced and dried roots aro produced sev
eral food preparations, as Brazilian ar
rowroot, tapioca, etc.
Let it be remembered that it is the
stceel cassava that is so highly recom
mended for South Georgia. Mr. L C.
Wade of the Southeru Railway com
pany, who has been to considerable
pains in investigating tho adaptability
of this plant to South Georgia soil, is sat
isfied that it will grow as well in Geor
gia as in Florida. Iu comparison with
other starch vegetables one aero of South
Georgia land will produce 4,000 pound!
of starch, while tho best corn or potatc
land in Illinois cr Michigan can produce
only 1,200 pounds of starch to the acre
from theso vegetables.
Whenever a sufficient araouut ol
cassava has been planted, starch facto
ries will bo startod, aud it has been esti
mated that theso will pay fivo dollars u
ton loaded on tho cars at any station
within 100 miles of their factory. Cas-
sara is easily propagated by cuttings of
the stem aud is of rapid growth, attain
ing maturity in six mouths. The pro
duction is at least sixteen times that ol

Cauo and Cassava Convention.
On April 9th there will be hold at
Brunswick, Go., a convention of those
interested in the introduction of cassava
cultivation into Georgia. They will
also discuss tho advantages to Georgia
of a very largo iucreaso iu the acreage
of sugar cane. It is their purpose to
inako South Georgia a center of agrl
cultural development and to promots
tho locating of factories for refining su
gar and syrup, aud others for making
starch aud stock food.
The introduction of these new indus
tries will greatly add to the population
and wealth of Georgia.—State Agri
cultural Department.
