Macox, April .20.—The express car of

this morning by two men who boarded
the train at Macon. The car was going
through from Atlanta to Savannah.
The express messenger was J. N. White
and the conductor Henry Morgan.
Some time after the train pulled out
of Macon, the two men, who bad «o-
creted themselves in some way, entered
the express car and confronted White.
They quickly stezed and bound him
hand and foot and threw a sack over
his head. They went through hi* pack
ages and secured about $560, bat left a
$1,000 package lying on the floor. Thoy
wore nnnble to do anythiug with the
safe, as it wus a combination affair.

THE ADVISER OF M'LAURIN
Former Senator 31. (’. Ilntlcr Accept*
i lie Responsibility.
Washington, April -0.—General M.
C. Butler, formerly senator from South
Carolina, is out in an authorized iuter
view, generally approving the course of
Senator Me La ur in iu everything tho
latter has done recently along political
lines, except his speech in behalf of the
ship subsidy bill.
General Butler and Senator McLau*
riu held frequent conference* during
the lust session of congress with regard
to national affairs, and Senator Butler
claims the credit of having advised Sen
utor McLiuriii to vote for the ratiftca
tion of the peace treaty, and also to sup
port tho policy of the administration in
regard to the Philippines. Senator But
ler was among the* call-.rs upon tho pros
ideuc today and it is uot unlikely that
tho political situation in South Carolina
was alluded to during the interview.
General Butler and Senator McLau-
riu both deny any inteution of joiuiug
iu a movement looking to the organiza
tion of a white Republican party in the
south. They claim that they are simply
taking a practical common sense view of
the situation which a change in indus
trial conditions has brought about.
They claim the right to entertain au
honest difference of opinion from those
who still adhere to the Democratic prin
ciples laid down in the Kansas City
platform. They also claim they are not
alone among southern Democrats who
decline to be bound by the declarations
of the Bryan convention, ami predict
that future development in tho south
will justify the course they ure now
