before a great while Russia will raise

causes the South no alarm, however.
Tho area for the production of cotton
has been gradually widening for mat»y
years and is now more than double
as large as it was at the beginning of
the civil war.
Cut this change will not hurt the
Sonth. It will only cause her to di
versify her crops more, to build up her
farm lands and make them more pro
ductive.
Many of our moat intelligent farmers
in the original cotton belt have long
since realized that the time would
come when Texas, Indian Territory
and other sections west of tbs -Missis
sippi would have a great advantage
over them in the production of cotton.
These lands are fresher and more pro
ductive than those in the original cot
ton belt. Crops are raised with leas
work and at a smaller cost.
Naturally, changes in the methods

of farming in Btates like Georgia must

up into small farms, crops must bo
diversified, lands must be built up aud
made more productive by systematic
change of crops and fertilization. In
the end, the new system will be better
than the old.
Here in the old eoath, almost every
variety of orop can be grown. Peach-
os, apples, grapes and other fruits must
be made money crops. Tobacoo can bo
profitably grown. Tea can be raised
in sections at a good profit. Corn and
grain aud hay crops must bo enlarged.
Sugar cane and potatoes must be
grown more extensively. All of these
things can be easily accomplished by

Those who are foolish enough to be
lieve that "trusts are good thiDga” will
no doubt have their minds disabused of
that idea by the plans which the great
steel trusts are preparing to carry into
effect. It appears that the combine has
determined to concentrate its plants in
two or three places, chiefly in Pitts
burg, and to abandon the small plants
scattered throughout the country. This
aciiou, it is safe to say, will not bo
■lewtd with favor by the people of tho
towns abandoned, many of which are
dependent upon the business of the steel
and iron industry and have, in foot,
grown np around the mills. What
the trust proposes to do with the
large army of workmen who are to
be thrown out of employment is apt
known, bat it is qnlte probable they
will be compelled to shift for them
selves as best they can.' Aside from
being left stranded by the closing pt
the mills in many now prosperous
towns, quite a number of workmen wtf 1
be subjected to heavy loss,as they bate
out of their savings purchased homes
ot their own,and these homes will have
to be sacrificed. Evon in the event
that the bust removes the workmen to
the few places where they propose to
concentrate the steel and iron mills the
removal will be a crushing blow to the
population of the towns which are
abandoned and their chief industry do
etroyed.
