Who Could Have Saved Her Life,
c. ncago, May 24.—John Alexander
Dcwie, tho “faith healer,” was placed
under arrest here today, pursuant to the
action of the coroner’s jury, which de-
dared him “criminally responsible” for
the death of Mrs. Emma Lucy Judd.
H. Worthing Judd, a disciplo of Dowie
and husband of the victim, was placed
under arrest, having appeared at the
criminal court building in company
With his superior.
Both men wero taken boforo Judge
Toley, who admitted them to bail.
Henrika Bratsoh and Marv a Spech-
ar. “maternity" nurses, who were at
Mrs. Judd’s bodsido when she died,
weft arrested last night and later ro-
Hosed under bonds.
They Prayed; bhe Suffered*
Mrs. Judd died a week ago, after 10
hours of suffering. Her infant also died.
She Was a member of Dowie's congrega
tion. and it i3 claimed did not ask for
medical attendance. While Dowie and
his elders and the nurses were praying,
Mrs. Judd, according to the verdict of
tbo physiciaus who made the autopsy,
burst a blood vessel owing to intense
pain. Tho doctors said that the treat
ment given by the medical practitioners
would certainly have saved her life.
After listening to this testimony, tho
coroner's jury brought in a verdict,
« Judd, tho two nurses and Dowie
t the action of the grand jury.
SOUTH AMERICAN DISPUTE.
President Dluz May Uo Called Upon to
Arbitrate Trouble.
New Yoke, May 24.—According to a
Washington dispatch to Tho Tribune,
President Diaz of Mexico may bo ap
pealed to if Prosldent McKinley and
Secretary Hay aro unable to bring tho
disputants over tho Pan-American con
gress together. It is true Mexico has
not been popular with her southern
neighbor for several years, but it is
thought, in spite of this, President
Diaz’s personal influence will be strong
enough to reconcile tho Latin-American
countries for a conference, uow that the
attention of tho wholo world is betug
called to tho discord existing among
pooples that should bo on friendly
terms.
President Diaz, it is known, is quite
as eager as President McKinley to bring
about au harmonious understanding be-
twoen the nations of the uow world,
and the views of tho loaders of thought
in tho United Statosaro playingaprom
incut part. . „ ...
It is thought that Porn and Bolivia
have receivod assuranoes from Europe
of financial aid in recovering their lost
provinces and a way to the sea if those
nations succeed in so manipulating the
forthcoming Pau-Amerioon congress ns
to force arbitration on Chill. This ns-
suranco was given, of course, with the
view of stirring up just that form of
itrlfe which is now threatening to make
fntile tho attempt to hold another Pam
American cougresa.
