We lmvo heard "Armour’s Helmet

in very flattering terms.
Best Soil For Irish Potatoes.
Irish potatoes give the best results in
a rich sandy loam, neither too wet, nor
too dry. If the season should be n wet
one, a clay subsoil would bo unfavor
able to tho growth of the potato. A
calcareous soil can generally be coanted
on for producing a cron largo and of
fine quality. Whon the soil contains
but little lime, it is well to nso this as a
fertilizer.
The inverted sod of an old pasture Is
good for the Irish potato. When such a
sod is used, a little well rotted compost
should be harrowed in npoa it. A com
post made of mnek and leached ashes
makes an excellent manure for this crop.
Enemies of the Potato.
Tho potato rot is a disease not thor
oughly understood and no effoctunl
remedy has yet been discovered for
plants affected by it. Tho only thing
that can prevent spreading is tho de
struction of oil infected stems and
leaves. In localities where other crops
have been destroyed by the rot, a remo-
dy Is found by tho nso of lime In tho
hills and by occasional dnstlng of_the
growing plant with It. Sometimes a field
attaoked by the rot has been saved by
mowing off the top of tho plants.
It has been found that crops on which
commercial fertilizers have been usod
are less liable to this disease than thoso
where composts of various kinds and
farm manuros have been applied to tho

Suggestions as to Best JIanner of
Slarketlnjr, Ftc.
From pamphlets just issued by the
Unitod States Deportment of Agricult
ure wo gather many Interesting sugges
tions about eggs and tbo best manner of
marketing them.
Tho egg industry Is already of consid
erable commercial importance. The egg
production of tho United States for IS90
was ostimatod at 820,000,000 dozen, and
thoso flguros are generally considered
too low. Onr own state was oredlted
by tho census of 1890 with 11,632,788
dozou eggs. Tho demand has always
been somewhat abend of tho supply in
Goorgin. Under tho influonce of pam-
phlots sent ont by tho Agricultural De
partments of tho Unitod States and of
tho several states, assisted by the work
of tho various experiment stations, there
has boon of late years great improve
ment In tho methods of feeding and
caring for poultry and In tho selection
of laying stook, so that tho egg produc
tion has greatly Increased.
There Is always o market for poultry
and eggs for food, and tho raising of
fanoy stook for brooding purposes pays
well la some localities.
In earlier times, eggs, when sold, wore
marketed near the plaoa where they
wore produced. But with improved
methods of transportation largo quanti
ties are now shipped from tho Unitod
States and Canada to remote points on
this continent and ovon to England and
more distant countries. Thoro oro spo-
oiol egg cases for shipping to far-distant
points.
Of oourso eggs that are to be trans
ported a long dtstanoe must be kept
fresh by artificial moans. Fresh eggs
put Into cold storage with a puro atmos
phere at a temperature of 84 degrees
Febrenbeit suffer very llttlo change In
tholr quality. When carriod on cars or
steamships they should bo kopt In a
temperature of from 43 to 88 dogroos.
When tho cases are romerved from the
cold storago chamber, thoy should not
bo opened at oaco In a warm atmos
phere, but should bo loft for at loast two
days uuoponod.
Iu tho last two or throe yoars a now
method of preserving oggs has been
tested with gratifying results. The
North Dakota Experiment Station has
paid particular attention to this prob-
lom. Tho now method referred to is to
pack the eggs in a suitable vossel which
must be clean and swoet and then pour
oarofully over tneni a solution of what
Is oollod water glass. Tnls is tbo popu
lar name for potassium sillcato, or for
sodium silicate, tho oommeroial artiolo
being often a mixture of tho two. Water
glass is commonly sold in two forms, a
syrup-thick liquid, of about tho consls-
toncy of molassos, and a powder.
Acoordlug to tho results obtained
from experiments a solution of tho de
sired strength for preserving eggs may
bo made by dissolving ono part of tho
syrup thiok waterglass In ten porta of
wotor. If waterglass powder Is used,
It is very important to have on hand for
the fowls some kind of green food. In
sommer, too, they should havo a run
sufficiently large to give them abund-
once of succulent vegetable matter.
But, of course, one of tho most im
portant uses of egg* i* ike raising of
more chickens. There is always a great
demand in the market for broilers. In
order to increase tho supply of broiler,
and frying sized chickens the various
kind3 of incubators have been mode.
Every chicken raiser of this day ii fa
miliar with the incubator. Tho man
who goes into the business of raising
chickens for tbo market will need one!
but let him bowaro of cheap articles,
for, like almost all cheap things, they
are worthless.
The markot bos been flooded with in
cubators of various kinds at prices rang
ing from $5 to $16. These havo proved
unsatisfactory and bavo brought great
difavor upon all inch machines. Tho
trouble waa they were too oheap to be
of any aooount
If an Incubator is needed, buy only a

Dr. Bice P. Steddom, Unitod States

the work done by tho department of og*
rionltnre on the lino of getting onr cot-
tie rid of the tiok and securing a lower
ing of the qnnrantino lino. Ho said that
Georgia was perhaps doing better than
any of tho other sonthern states and
that In appreciation of tho work done in
this state the United States government
had decided to appoint a speolal Inspec

tho governmoat of the United States.
It has been the aim of tho Agricultn*
ral Department to encourage the effort*
of tho cattlo raiser* of Georgia for tho
