hannesburg the country has been start
led by the receipt ot news of desperate
fighting and heavy British losses within
40 miles of the g >hl reof city. Tho bat
tle at Vlad:vou:Liu on the Durban-Jo-
liannesburg ro'd reported by Lord
Kitchener today is tho most serious en
gagement since General Clement's re
verse at Magaliesburg. It shows Gen
eral Delarey is in no way daunted by
the capture of 11 of his guns by Gen
eral Babiugton, six weeks ago.
Tho garrison at Vladvontoin, appa
rently largely composed of yeomanry,
bad 174 men put out of action. That
their as-ailauts camo to close quarters
and suffered heavily is shown by the
number of dead loft on tho field.
The dispatch from Lord Kitchener,
dated Pretoria, May 30, is as follows:
“Dixon’s force at Vladifontein was at-
tricked yesterday by Delarey’s forces and
there was severo fighting. The enemy
Whs eventually driven off, with heavy
loss, leaving 35 dead. I regret that our
casualties also were severe. The killed
and wounded uumbered 174. Four offi
cers wero killed.”
