THE AMERICAS WEEKLY TIMES-RECORDER: FRIDAY, JUNE 14, 1901.
MONTEZUMA TO HELP AMERICOS
Our Fertilizers Will Be Manufactured
There.
The moneyed element in Americus
-who believo manufacturing interests
do not help a town, yet buy the prod
nets of mills located elsewhere, mav
find satisfaction in the fact that our
thrifty neighbor, Montezuma, pro
poses to become one of onr sources of
guano supply.
And thousands of Americus dollars
-will be expended there.
Ever alert to adTance her commer
cial interests, Montezuma men with
money to invest are going to put some
of it in a big cotton oil mill and ferti
lizer plant at once.
They are not afraid of the fertilizer
octopus, and knowing full well that
the farmers for miles around will pat
ronize a home enterprise in preference
to a foreign one, they are going to
build a big plant, giro employment to
their people and mako good money be
sides.
All of which is most commendable,
and a lino object lesson.
Americus, apparently, will never
have a fertilizer plant unless the peo
ple hero build it. Will they do it, or
will they buy of the Montezuma mill.
Montezuma is our neighbor; their
factory will be free and independent
of any trust, and if wo have no ferti
lizers to offer the trado of this terri
tory there certainly can be no objec
tion to the farmers of Sumter going to
Monteznma to purchase it.
But would it not be better to build a
small factory hero with home capital;
supply our farmers, give employment
to o half hundred home people and
make money besides?
The Central Itailroad is making a
survey of a prospective line between
Cuthbert and Lumpkin. The latter
place is on the main line of the Sea
board Air Line, between Americus and
Montgomery, and is twenty-two miles
from Cuthbert. It is an important
station, and tho Central will have a
try at some of the business of the Sea
board. Tho surveying party lias al
most completed its work. An official
of the Central said yesterday that tho
country through which tho line is to
run 6hows up well, and that a great
deal is hoped for from it. When com
pleted tho extension will be run in
connection with the .Control's lino
from Cuthbert to Fort Gaines.

"Our little daughter bad an almost fa
tal attack of whooping corgh and bron
chitis," writes Mrs. W. U. flnviland, of
Armonk, N, Y., "but, when ail other
remedies failed, we saved her lifo with
Dr. King’s New Discovery. Our niece,
who had Consumption in an advancod
stage, also used this wonderful medi

RESPONDS TO LAST ROLLCALL.
Death of a Well Known Veteran of
Sumter.
Tho announcement yesterday of tho
sudden death of Mr. Boss Potter was a
shock to his friends and caused uni
versal regret. Mr. Totter was a wide
ly known and successful farmer resid
ing near Americus, and was hold iu
highect esteem among his acquaint
ances. Yesterday morning it was ob
served by Mrs. I’ottor that ho was in a
comatose state, and he died withont
regaining conscionsnoss, Mr, Potter
was 5-1 years of age, and is survived by
his wife, throe grown sons and n

final tribute to a bravo old soldier aud

A Terrible Explosion.
"Of a gasoline stove burned a lady

VETERANS TO WEAR UNIFORMS
Heroes of the Sixties to Again Don
the Gray.
When the Board of Trustees of the
Soldiers’ Home meets again next
month, it is very probable that the
members will adopt a Confederate
gray uniform for the old soldiers who
are now living at the plaoe provided
for them by the stato. The trustees
are empowered to furnish clothing to
the inmates of the home, and the gom
oral opinion is that Confederate gray
would bo more appropriate than any
other kind of uniform that could bo
selected. Theu there is a sentiment
around the Confederate gray that will
endear it to every veterau and visitors
to tho home would, no doubt, bo
pleased to seo tho old heroes wearing
the uniforms they wore in the sixties.

Deafness Cannot Be Cured
by local applications, as they cannot

There is only ono way to cure deafness,
and that is by constitutional remedies.
Deaf noss Is caused by an li lUmed con

txllamed you have a rumbling sound of
Imperfect hearing, and when it is on

out and this tubo restored to its normal
condition, hearing will bo destroyed
forever; nine cases out of ten are caus

THE BARGAIN CRAZE.
Men, It la AIIckfiI, Are nm Mnch In
fected a* the Women.
“This perennial joke about the love
of women for bargains wearies me,”
said a bright business woman the other
day. “With most presumptuous supe
riority men charge our sex with au ex
travagant zeal for bargains, but I see
enough of business men to assure me
that they are just as eager as women
are to get an article at a few ceuts less
than the usual price.
“Mr. A is generally extravagant
in his personal expenditures, but lie Is
keen after bargains. The other day he
came into our office wearing an air of
great satisfaction, and his jubilation
bad no other foundation than the dis
covery pf a street stand where ‘sec
onds’ In lead pencils were sold at 2
cents each.
“‘If you know a good pencil when
you see it,’ he explained, ‘you can rum
mage In the pile and pick out 5 and 10
ceut pencils at 2 ceuts each or three
for 5.
“ ‘And that reminds me of another
bargain. You know the 10 cent cigars
I smoke? Well, there Is a little shop
down near the ferry where you can
get them four for a quarter. I just
beard of the place and ran down there
at lunchtime and tilled my pockets.
Great bargain.’
“And would you believe It, that man,
whose transactions run Into the mil
lions, went on telling my employer of
bargains in clothes, stationery, etc.,
and Mr. It stopped In the midst of
Ids estimates on a big eontrnct to note
addresses and to tell Mr. A of bar
gains be had discovered in neckwear
and shoes nml household supplies.
“Yet women are said to monopolize
the bargain hunting disease.”—New
York Press.
Assyrian 3Iay He Saved.
St. Johns, N. F., Juno 8.—The div
ers’ reports show that it will be com
paratively easy to tow off the Ley land
steamer Assyrian from her position off
Cape Race. They are now only await
ing the arrival of a suitable wrecking
tug, which is on her way from Sydney,
with powerful pumps and requisites,
which will euable the leaky holds to be
kept free from water and prevent the
vessel from foundering wueu drawn off
the rocks. Five schooners are now un
loading the cargo from tho after hold.
The ship’s own steam is hoisting out tho
cargo. The weather coutiuuos perfect.
Braises.
For an ordinary bruise such as re
sults from an ill directed hammer or
from a door shutting on one’s finger
use a mild astringent of some sort,
such as witch hazel or vinegar. Keep
the bruise constantly wet until the
pain ceases, using a bandage of old
muslin for wrapping. If the pain Is
very Intense, laudanum may be added.
After the pain has ceased and only dis
coloration and swelling remain to tell
the tale it Is a p od plan to apply a
stimulating liniment. This induces an
extra flow of fresh blood to tlm spot.
In tho case of a severe bruise the sup
ply of blood to the Injured part or: -t
be lessened by elevating it above the
heart and applying cold water or even
Ice.
Of course when the bruise, or contu
sion rather, is of such moment house
remedies should be indulged in only
while waiting for a doctor, a truth that
necessarily applies to all the various
emergencies that arise. In cases of se
vere burns physicians are often ham
pered by the home remedies that cover
the burns and hide the real extent of
the injury.

Massacre For Apoplexy.
Tlio medical profession recognizes to
day as it lias never done before tho re
markable aid of massage. It lias done
marvelous things for paralysis, even
for apoplexy, at wbieli doctors once
looked on helplessly. Apoplexy is enus
ed by a elot of blood on tbe brain, and
if that elot ean he broken up, if an
emptying can be effected of clogged
veins, recovery is in sight. Constant
massage of the forehead and skull will
do It (tills lias been proved over and
over again), while paralyzed limbs, by
patient, constant kneading, ean have
new life rubbed into them. — Good
