409 Jackson Street, - Americus, Ga,
Former Salesman for Whitley'Co. is
on Trial.
A case of considerable local interest
was entered upon in superior court
yesterday, that of the State versus E-
L. Heyes, charged with embezzlement,
the Whitley Grocery Co. with which
Mr. Hejs was formerly connected in
the capacity of traveling salesman,
having instituted the proceedings
against him.
The trial occupied the entire session
and is not yet concladed.
A strong array of legal talent repres
ents both the State and the defense.
Solicitor-General F. A. Hooper is as
sisted bv Messrs. Blalock, Cobb, Fort
and AA’inchester in the prosecution of
the case.
Mr. HeyB’ attorneys ore Messrs.
Hudson, Williame, Stephens, of
Preston, and Hickey, of the Lump
kin bar.
The entire morning session was taken
up in drawing a jury. Forty-eight
jurors were available, and from that
number Messrs. E. 8. Oliver, T. J.
Stewart, J. 15. Duckworth, A. B. How
ard. J. B. Kinard, W. B. Johnson, A.
8. Perry, AA T . A. Gammage, L. D. Wise,
John Mills, W. A. Bray and G. W,
Dostcr, were selected to pass apon the
merits of the case.
Not until the afternoon was the case
finally entered upon,
Mr. C. R. AVhitley, president of the
Whitley Grocery Co. was upon the
stand for several hours and made a full
aud suecint statement of that side of
the case. He was followed by Major
W. S, Gillis, whon tbo state rested for
the present.
At this juncture counsel for tho de
fendant retired for consultation.
Upon their return Mr. Heys took the
stand and made his statement, which
was listened to with breathless atten
tion by the great throng in tho court
room.
He reviewed at length the charges
preferred against him, explaining the
alleged shortage in his cash returns to
the honso and denying vehemently any
wrong doing. Each trausaction charged
was entered iuto at length by defend
ant, who thus sought to exonerate him
self of criminality.
Somewhat to the surprise of the
spectators, the defense introduced no
testimony beyond the statement of Mr.
Hoys, though many witnesses were
summoned.
Both sides then announced closed,
and unless the case is reopened this
morning a conclusion will soon be
reached as only tho argument of coun
sel romains to follow. It was expected
at first that, from the number of wit
nesses summoned, tho case would con
sume several days.
A verdict, however, may be reached
today. Tue amount of the alloged dis
crepancy or shortage in Mr. Hoys ac
counts is about §2,030 or §2,300.

The special meetings to begin at
First Baptist ehnrch next Sunday
promise to be fall of interest and will
attract large congregations daily. The
pastor, Kov. It. E. Neighbour, is desir
ous of meeting the people of the conn
ty us well as of the town, and already
has accepted invitations to preach at
several country churches dnring the
summer months. It is his purpose al
so, it is said, to preach at the railway
shops here at some future time, pro
vided permission is granted and a room

The Teachers of Webster County In
Sessicn.
Preston, Ga. Jane 12,—The annual
session of Webster Connty teachers as
sembled at Preston June 3rd with
Prof. A. F, Archer, of Lake City, Fla.
as conductor. By his courtesy aud
gentlemanly manner, Prof Archer en
deared himself to the teachers and
those who had the opportunity of hear
ing him.
It lsthe verdict of all the teachers
that he has the true conception of the
duties of a conductor.
The daily routine of work was inter
spersed with music, with Miss Aunie
Lee Bell as organist. The teachers
feel grateful to her for her kind assist
ance. May she be the recipient of the
sunshine which she carries with her.
On Tuesday night, the good people
of Preston entertained the teachers at
Lawn Party on the oonrt house square,
the constancy of the man in the moon,
which shone beautifully, giving in
spiration to each Romeo in discussing
subjects (cot pedagogical) with u
Juliet.
To Misses Ella Moore and Ella Bell
especial credit is given for their efforts
to make this occasion successful.
They succeeded, and it is the opinion
of all the teachers that “their good
looks are excelled only by their good
deeds.” May their lives be as refresh
ing as the cake and ice cream which
they served.
Wednesday night at the Baptist
Church, we were delightfully enter
tained by Prof. Archer’s lecture on
the "Philosophy of Life, or the Storms
and Sunshine of Life,” It grinned
like a basket of possum heads from be
ginning to ending with anecdotes,
which were heartily appreciated.
The teachers, resident and visiting,
entertained the people of Preston with
an extemporaneous entertainment at
tbo school house Thursday night.
The orations of Messrs. Archer,
Spivey, Slappoy and the recitations of
Misses Harris, Kidd and Stapleton
were models of excellence. Tears of
laughter streamed from the eyes of all
at the rendition of the "Old school
debate" by Hollis Kenyon,
The ontertainmont was enjoyed bv
all; people were sorry they oould not
laugh more. Beaatifnl music was far
nished by Miss Bell, Messrs. Bell and
Sapp.
The last entertainment was given on
F.iday night at the hospitable home of
Mr. aud B. S. Bell. It was enjoyed
by quite a crowd of young people.
I know that I voioo a sentiment com
mon to all the teachers when I say
that the institute was oue of the most
successful ever attended. To Com
missiouer Stevens, Prof. Archer, tho
good people of Preston, the connty
board of education and all, in tho
name of the teachers, I thank yon for
the hospitality which we have received
at your hands.

And all that thou hast done for me.
