all negroes, were executed in the yard
of the jail of Screven county this after
noon at 12:20 o’clock, for the murder of
two white men. The necks of four of
them were broken by the fall.
The negroes bore up well. They sang
nt the jail and afterward marched be
tween a body of soldiers to the scaffold.
Here they made a short talk and re

“Knights of the Archer.”
These five negroes wore convicted of
a murder committed under au alleged
criminal conspiracy by an organized
band of blacks known as “Knights of
the Archer.” The motto of the organ
ization, it is said, was “Death to the
Whites.” This gang, under the leader
ship of a negro desperado known as An
drew McKinney, terrorized for a long
time the law-abiding negroes of Screven
county, from whom it is said they ex
acted constant tribute and protection.
The murder for which the men died was
but the culmination of a long series of
crimes and misdemeanors of varying
degrees.
It is common report that the charter
of this oathbeund organization was sign
ed in blood, and McKinney assembled
bis band only at night, when he swore
them, with awesome rites, to secrecy
and to deeds of death. They preyed on
the barns and farmhouses on both the
Georgia and South Carolina banks of
the Savannah river, terrorized the peace
ful and well-disposed members of their
own race and conducted a campaign of
murder and robbery.
Story of tile Crime.
On a night in October, 1899, Milton
Mears, a constable of Screven county,
started out from Sylvauia to servo a
warrant for the arrest of Joe Sanders, a
young negro who was wanted for some
trivial offense against the law. While
the existence and objects of the
“Knights of the Archer” were not at
that time definitely known, they were
suspected, and common report assigned
young Sanders and his father, Jesse
Sanders, to membership in the organi
zation. Mears was accompanied by
Fillmore Herrington and Captain Jesse
Wade.
The men were apprehensive of no
trouble. They went up to the veranda
of the Sanders’ house, which was situ
ated in the outskirts of the Savannah
river, the swamp at this place being
about 1 mile wide. It was about 9
o’clock at night. Captain Wade called
to the elder Sanders, who came to the
door. He stated to Sanders that they
had con** to arrest his boy and that he
could go along to the magistrate’s home,
where a bond could be arranged and the
boy liberated. Sanders replied that thev
could not get the boy, and went back
into the house, closing the door behind
him.
Signal For Slaughter.
Suddenly there camo from the swamp
the wailing note of the mocking bird,
clear and distinct. It was followed by
one other of o similar cn&racter, and the
men started—chilled to the bone.
A second later a fusillade began.
From the cracks between the logs of tho
cabin and from a thicket of dwarf trees
close by came the flash of rifles and
shotguns, and the three men, all desper
ately wounded, fell to the ground. Cap
tain Wade, despite many wounds man
aged to crawl to bis buggy aud make
bis way to Sylvauia, where he told of
the shooting.
Herrington and Mears were found
near the Sanders cabin, literally shot to
f aeces, but the few hours that had been
ost between the commission of the
homicide and the arrival of the posse at
the scene of the crime had sufficed for
the escape of the murderers For days
and weeks the search for them con
tinned, and one after another five were
arrested and placed in jail here. These
were the men who met death today.
Others Ksenpe.
The others, including McKinney and
the real loaders of the Knights of the
Archer, successfully effected their es
cape and have never been captured.
Through woods aud swamps that abound
in Screven county, across the river into
South Carolina, aud in every lumber
and turpentine camp in four states and
in the slums of every southern city they
have been sought for bat nevjfr cap
tured.
The attorneys for the five negroes ex
hausted every effort in their behalf;
every possible appeal was made for ex
ecutive clemency, but Governor Candler
aud the purdou bourd steadfastly de
clined to interfere.
A negro, at present unknown, writing
from Augusta, threatened to assassiunte
Governor Candler if the executions took
place.
