THE AMERICUS WEEKLY TIMES-RECORDER: FRIDAY, JUNE 28, 1901.
AGAINST MR, DUNCAN:
HERESY IS CHARGED
A Prominent Divine In the
Holston Conference.
TROUBLE IN THE CHURCH
tonsatloual Kcsolutions Concerning
I’aslor OisriMMMl by Congregation of
' t.nary M. h. t liurcli, South,
Chattanooga, Juno 'll.— It developed
today that at the quarterly conference
of Centenary M. E Church, South, this
week, sensational resolutions were in
troduced and discussed concerning Rev.
J. A. Duncan, pastor. A clause sub
stantially charges heresy, baaed, it is
said, on a statement from the pulpit
that he did not believe some things
taught by the church.
The principal grievance of the resolu
tions was regarding alleged neglect of
duty as pastor, instances being cited
where pastoral duties had been neg
lected for pleasure.
Cuing to Annual Conference.
The resolutions wore not adopted, it
being decided that the quarterly confer
ence was not of proper jurisdiction. The
dissatisfaction, which appears to be mu
tual between church and pastor, will be
aired in annual conference in Knoxville
next October.
Dr. Duncan was transferred here,
after the last annual conference, much
against his will and that of the cfcurch,
as he desired to remain at Knoxville,
and Centenary church wished to retain
Dr. Monk.
is u Social Favorite.
Centenary is the largest and most in
fluential church in this city. Dr. Dun
can is considered the most eminent di
vine in the Holston conference. He fs
devoted to golf and other athletic sports
and is a social favorite.
One of the charges made is that Dr.
Duncan refused to attend the bedside of
a dying child when sent for, on the
ground of a previous engagement, and
that he spent the time in playing bil
liards.
An Excellent Combination.
The pleasant method and beneficial
effects of the well known remedy,
Svnri* of Figs, manufactured by the
California Fig Syrup Co., illustrate
the valueof obtaining the liquid laxa
tive principles of plants known to be
medicinally laxative and presenting
them in the form most refreshing to the
taste and acceptable to the system. It
is the one perfect strengthening laxa
tive, cleansing the system effectually,
dispelling coldt, headaches and fevers
gently yet promptly and enabling one
ercoine habitual constipation per
manently. Its perfect freedom from
every objectionable quality and sub
stance, and its acting on the kidneys,
liver and bowels, without weakening
or irritating them, make it the ideal
laxative.
In the process of manufacturing figs
are used, as they are pleasant to the
taste, but the medicinal qualities of the
remedy are obtained from senna and
other aromatic plants, by a method
known to the California Fig Syrup
Co. only. In order to get its beneficial
effects and to avoid imitations, please
remember the full name of the Company
printed on the front of every package.

Raleigh, Juno 21.—High Point has a
sensation which stirs all that section.
Harry P. McKnight has been operating
there a Christian science and faith cure
college. He organized a stock company
and applied to tho secretary of state to
issue a charter to the “college” to grant
diplomas and confer degrees. The sec
retary refused. A few days later a
story was circulated connecting Mc
Knight with Miss Snider, a farmer’s
daughter, n pupil in McKnight’s “col
lege.” Chief of Police Ben net said he
saw’ McKnight at night with tho girl
and ho and another man followed them
to a cemetery, where he found them in
a compromising position. He gave them
some plain talk, returned to town and
told the news.
Tho next night a party of seven young
men determined to whitocap McKnight
and drive him out of town. Ouo per
sonated a deputy sheriff aud, going to
McKnight’s home, got him on the street.
McKnight suspected something, aud, as
tho youug men appeared, tired iuto
them, striking ouo on the foot. They
fled. He threatened to bring suit. To
day ho did so, charging assault against
Frank Secrest and seven others. Ho
has employed the ablest lawyers aud so
have tho alleged wbitecapers.
Miss Suider also brought suit today
against Rennet aud Frank Secrest,
charging slander, a very serious offense
in North Carolina.
The hearing is sot for today at
Greensboro, and hundreds of persons
will go there from High Point. Sensa
tional developments are promised. Feel
ing has been high against McKnight.

Women Lawyers Are Barred.
Memphis, June 21. —Miss Marion Grif
fin of Memphis was yesterday denied a
liceuso by the supremo court on tho
ground that a lawyer practicing law is
an officer of the court and the state con
stitution prohibits women from holding
offices. Judges NVilkes and Caldwell
delivered dissenting opinions, believing
the decision of the other justices as
reaching too far. There are a score of
women lawyers in Tennessee who have
been patiently awaiting the decision.
