The Number Injured, However, Uus
Far In Kxces* of the Figures For
the Previous Year—The Deaths Re
sulting From Lockjaw, Etc.
Chicaoo, July 5. —The Tribune today
preseuts reports from all sections of
the country, showing the number of
persons killed and injured as a result of
celebrating the Fourth of July.
The number actually killed is less
than last year, being 19 against 30 then,
but the number of injured is considera
bly larger, the figures being 1,811,
against 1,395.
The real list of fatalities will, how
ever, not be known until the number of
delays resulting from lockjaw caused by
toy pistol wounds come in.
Last year in Chicago there wore no
deaths reported on July 5 from toy pis
tols, but before the mouth was oat 95
had died from the resulting lookjaw,
and the remainder of the country sent
in equally fatal records.
Chicago last year had 1 death and 42
injured. This time no death is reported,
but there is a list of 103 injured.
The number of wounds from toy pis
tols, however, is limited to 5, which
would indicate that the prohibition put
on that dangerous toy was at least par
tially effective.
Philadelphia Leads.
Of other cities, Philadelphia makes
the largest showing. It reports l»o
casualties of every kind and description,
and Cincinnati comes next, with 150.
New York was singularly lucky, being
behind Chicago in the list of injured,
but it had three deaths resulting from
an explosion of fireworks; and New Lou
don had a premature explosion of a can*
...U:WfiTH killed.

the famous Celebration.
New Yore, July 4.—The observance
of Independence day iu this city was
more than usually quiet this year.
There were flagraising ceremonies at
sunrise at the Battery and at the block-
house iu Central park, but they were at
tended by very few people. Nearly
every one who could do so left tho city
yesterday, on account of th* intense
beat, and today the streets were almost
deserted.
Tammauy Hall held its regular inde
pendence day celebration, at whioh tho
Declaration of Independence was read
and speeches were made by Governor
Jennings of Florida and other leaders
of the Democratic party. Tho follow
ing letter of regret from William J.
Bryan, dated Washington, June 39, was
read:
“I congratulate Tammany on the fidel

turning anniversary of the signing of
the Declaration of Independence. I

truths set forth in that declaration,
special emphasis will be given to the as

Striking Machinists Demonstrate II
In Federal Court*
Cincinnati, July 6.—A novel spectacle
was presented in the United States dls*
trict court wlion 70 striking machinists
who had been enjoined by tho order of
the court marched in a body to the
office of the United States marshal for
the purpose of facilitating the service
upon them which the marshal waa
bound to make. As the name of each
one was called he stepped forward and
received a copy of the injunction and
his subpoena) in chancery. The ma
chinists’ lodges were served through
their presidents.
The strikers voluntarily took this
course, realizing fhe difficulty of finding
their members, some of whom are in
camp. They desired in this way to give
proof of their intention to obey the
law.

Three deaths and eight prostrations

Chicago. July 8.—A delightfully oool

today and the forcecaster says moderate
temperature will prevail at least till
