n.j 13 - - The Associated
i.-i^ijv informed that tho
special dispatches announcing that the
Nicaragua negotiations had reached a
deiiuite phase and that United States
Ambassador Choate was conferring
with Lord Pauncefote and Lord Lans-
dowuo are utterly without foundation.
According to this official information,
the only stage reached is that of consul
tation between the Marquis of Lans-
dowue and Lord Pauncefote, and Am
bassador Choate will have to see the
foreign minister a good many more
times before the affair is ready to put
before the cabinet. It is also said that
Mr. Choate has not been and is not
likely to be consulted at all
Senator Lodge Talks.
United States Senator Lodge has ar
rived in Loudon, but will stay here on
ly a few days, then proceeding to Bay
reuth and returning here in September.
In the course of a conversation the sen
ator said:
“This is purtly a holiday trip. I do
not intend to meet any English states
men or to discuss any matters connect
ed with foreign affairs. As regards the
Nicaragua canal, I suppose there will
be a lot more talking before anything is
done. If Senator Krye retains his other
chairmanship, then Senator Cullom will
take the position as chairman of the for
eign relations committee. It is merely a
matter of seniority. What Senators
Frye and CjIIoiu intend to do I do not
yet know."
TARIFF DIFFERENCES.
These Have Given Way to Differences
In Kellgions.
New York, July 13.—The rumor that
the continental powers intend to com
bine in a boycott of American poods
when the commercial treaties expire is
regarded in Kugland, a Tribune dis
patch from Loudon says, merely as a
suggestion by angry Viennese trades
men who expect to be undersold.
Tne Spectator points out that states
men are only too well aware that, uuless
Great Britain were included in a tariff,
American goods would be simply pur
chased by Englishmen anil sent out at a
nominal increase in price. Besides,
trado is not one-sided, and the stoppage
of all American purchases wouid be
more felt on tho continent than in
America.
This rumor, however, indicates the
importance which trade is assuming in
international politics and the extremo
bitterness produced by commercial riv
alry. Differences as to the tariffs have
taken tho place of differences as to re
ligion.
HOTEL IS BURNED.
Guests Escape In Night Clothes—Sev
eral Injured.
Butte, Mon., July 13.—At 2:40 this
morning a still alarm was turned in
from the Butte hotel, a 4-story structure
on Broadway, The firemen were un
able to locate tho blaze for some 30 min
utes, and the greatest confusion pre
vailed. A number of guests on the
lower floors succeeded iu groping their
way downstairs in tho smoke and es-
caping with nothing but their night
clothes. Scores of others were rescued
from the upper windows.
At 4 o’clock the tiro was completely
under control, and tho hotel manage
ment state that to their best knowledge
all the guests and help havo been ac
counted for.
The injured are:
Gus Kuglish of Anaconda, leg broken
in jumping from window.
Joe Devine, cut aud bruised in jump
iug from fire escape.
A number of others sustained trivial
injuries.
The interior of tho hotel is completely
gutted, aud Mr. Hugh Wilson, the les
see of the hotel, estimates his loss at
190,000.
The cigar store of J. A. Heilbrouer
and the saloon of J. Lange were also
somewhat damaged. The hotel guests
lost a quaumy of personal effects, most
of which they threw out of the windows
in their excitement. Their losses will
be considerable.
Investigation of Bobberies.
Chattanooga, July 13.—Colonel W.
P. Rodgers of the Twenty-ninth United
States iufautry has been in the city for
several days investigating the recent
wholesale robberies of government sup
plies from tho local recruiting station
by one of the soldiers on detail assist
ing the sergeant iu charge. Tho col
onel exonerates tho officer iu charge of
the station, but the extent of his finding
will not bo revealed until he reaches
Washington. It is believed his rejiort
will result iu more stringent regulations
for recruiting stations.
