ficers on Lookout for Suspect.
A plucky citizen anil a daring black
burglar engaged tc a desperate hand-
to-hand encounter yesterday morning,
each grappling the other and perhaps
expecting death momentarily.
The fearful episode took place at the
residence of Mr. Charles l nderwooh
at 520 Lamar street.
The negro was palled from under
the bed and, finding escape cut off as
he supposed, turned upon Mr. Under
wood who had seized him.
For several minutes the two men
were engaged in combat, the negro
making a desperate effort to escape,
while Mr. Underwood was trying to
hold him until help arrived or he
could secure some weapon.
In the struggle the negro's shirt was
nearly torn from him.
Making a desperate effort, the bur
glar freed himself from Mr. Under
wood's clutches, and dashing through
an open window, reached the streot.
This was not done, however, before
Underwood clearly recognized him,
and he with several of his friends, kept
up a dilligent search for the burglar.
Ashe is well known his capture is a
matter of time only.
It said that the presence of the
negro in the room was detected by the
unmistakable“odour de Afritjue”wliich
literally filled the premises.

BROUGHT BALES TO AMERICUS.
Company Has Written Agreement
With City Whereby Property Re
verts to Donors In Event It Ceases
to Be Operated as Main Shops.
The Times-Recorder several days
ago made mentiou of rumors current
to the effect that certain departments
of the Seaboard Railway shops in
Americas might be removed to Ports
mouth, to build up the Bhops there,
and that some machinery had been
shipped.
Since that time these rumors have
been given wider currency, until now
the report lias gone out that the en
tire shops are to be picked up bodily
and carried to Portsmouth.
When iu reality there’ll be nothing
of the kind whatever.
It was even said that all of the foun
dry department had boen shipped away.
Upon the contrary the foundry, or a
goodly portion of it, was rnnning all
right late yesterday afternoon. Some
parts of machinery might havo have
gone but the foundry is still doing
business hero.
It has also been reported that two
coaches injured in the Preston wreck
last Saturday had been sent from the
Americas shops to Portsmouth.
These same cars can be Been at the
Americas shops today, whero they are
being repaired.
It is stated positively by parties in a
position to know that little if any of
the equipment of the shops here has
been sent away, but iu snob eventuali
ty it would be for temporary use, in al 1
probability.
Iu fact, an enormous lot of repair
work has been done at the Americus
shops this year. Cars aad coaohes
from each of the five divisions, it is
Baid, have been overhauled here and
put in first class condition This be
ing true, as stated, there will be no
great volume of car repair work for a
time, and this force of employes may
be reduced temporarily,
As yet, however, but two Bktiled car
builders have been laid off, and their
enspension is temporary.
This statement was made the Times
Recorder yesterday by a gentleman in
position to know. But the foroe may
be cut even more daring the summer,
mucuous or uctjl tlie (all work.
Certainly there will bo no remoyal
of the shops from Amerieus.
In refutation of this rumor, it may
be stated that under the agreement be
tween the city and the railroad company
all of that splendid proporty, given by
the city, would revert to the donors iu
the event of sncli removal, this being
one of the stipulations thereto.
And this eontract will be enforced to
the letter. Muoh hae been Baid idly
of the removal of tue shops. The
Times-Recorder does not believe it.
Americus will always havo the shops.

IT’S AN
ILL OMEN
Thinks the wife, to have the wedding ring
»lip from the finger. "Something is going
to happen.” _ .
Something is happening. That ring
could hardly be pulled from the finger
hen it was put there a few years ago.
Now it slips off by its own weight. How
thin the fingers have grown! And the
fingers don't grow thin alone. How thin
the face is and how thin the once plump
form. Almost unconsciously the wife
has been fading and wasting away. The
strength given to children has never been
regained. Drains which should have been
stopped have been neglected.
That is a common experience with
women, unless some friend has shared
with them the secret of the strengthening
and healing power of Dr. Pierce’s Favorite
Prescription. It regulates the periods,
dries the drains which undermine the
strength, heals inflammation and ulcera
tion. and cares female weakness. It makes
the baby’s advent practically painless and
gives vigor and vitality to nursing mothers.

Conference of Steel Workers and Em*

Pittsburg, July 13.—The joint con
ference of representatives of the steel
corporations aud the Amalgamated As
sociation of Steel and Tin workers was
resumed at the Hotel Lincoln at 10
o’clock this morning. Both sides were
cheerful aud a strong effort will be made
today to bring the conference to a speedy
close. While no date has been set for
a final adjournment, several of the con
ferees are arranging to leave the city
this evening, and as President Shaffer
has declared that he will not consent to
any further postponement of tho con
ferences, it is believed a settlement or
disagreement will be reached before
nightfall.
President Shaffer made the announce
ment before entering the conference
this morning that he regarded further
delay as useless aud harmful for both
sides. The issue has to be met, he said,
and there is no use in prolonging it.
The same representatives of the man
ufacturers were present at the confer
ences as on preceding days.
At 10:30 o’clock the conference opened.
After an hour aud a half tho confer

to have the conferees talk wore fruit

STRIKERS CRIPPLE ENGINES,
Methods They Employ to Harass Offi

Asheville, N. C., July 13.—Accord
ing to what is technically known in the
local yards of the Southern as “round
house talk,” the striking machinists are
not pursuing a course of utter docility.
It is said that tho machinists or their
sympathizers, in order to prevent any
forgetfulness on the part of the road
officials, have adopted a method of ob
struction, which, while iu uo wise dan
gerous, is none the less trying ou the
official nervous system.
By manipulating certain machinery
the steam is allowed to escape from the
largo chests on either side of the engiue
aud then the train necessarily stops.
This was done Sunday at Seneca, S. C.,
causing considerable delay. Tho pas
senger train which should get hero from
the south at 10 o’clock did not arrive
until after noon. As soon as tho steam
blew out an engine at Greenville was
sent for, but upon the arrival at Seneca
was found to have two hot boxes. The
expense of repairing an engine when it
is blown out iu this way is said to be quit. 3
