Our Great MU-Snnuner Clearance Sale I
YV
j£ will not weary you with a long introduc
tory as to the importance of this sale; but
simply say to you now and here, that the sole object
object of this big summer selling event is to dispose
of all surplus seasonable merchandise; and to that
end we have gone carefully through each section and
so reduced prices that there can be no mistake about
the bargain nature of the occasion. Of course a week
of such selling, at such prices, means a present
money loss; but what matters that when we gain
two-fold object. We clear our shelves for the
autumn stocks, and at the same time give our public
a buying benefit that they will appreciate. Just one
week will this sale last—six working days and it
will make a record for itself if money saving plays
any part in your buying economy.

The three Macon neeroes arrested
Monday for the part they took in the
trouble at Magnolia Dell wherein one
of their gang. Bill English, was killed
and two officers wounded, are still
locked up in Sumter conntj’s brick

And the chances are that they will

The names of the trio aro Ed Turner,
Ben Brown and King Washington,

to murder is against them. All are
securely tired behind the bars.
It is hoped no more serious charge
will havo to bo made.
The men will bo held upon this
charge only, pending the recovery of
Officer Albritton. It is said they were
engaged in the shooting affray prior to
the arrival of the polico upon the
scene, in whioh many shots were tired.
Hill Fitzgerald, an Americas negro
who played target for several of the
Macon coons, was arrested with the
three, but afterwards released.

Thrifty Citizen Will Supply a
Demand.
It is rattier remarkable that iu build-
,„g nt> thoiudustrieacf Americus it bas
remained for tho Twentieth century
mau to establish one most needed, an
institution for the propagation of craw
fish. But it is done.
And to this extent Amerieua strides
ahead of all Georgia cities.
Compared with a crawfish farm the
oil business is a pinhook affair, aud
even the plumber, the ioe king aud the
coal baron must respect tho owner of a
good crawfish farm.
Everybody knows that tho tail of a
erawtish is tho iinost bream bait in the
world. This fact creates a demand for
fish tails, not flsh yarns, and every dis
ciple of Isaac Walton when going to
the creek first hunts up a crawfish.
This necessitates a long delay which
should bo avoided, if possible.
And au Americas man has found that
way by going into the business of rais
ing crawfish, and already is claiming
kiu with John D, Kockefoller,
Amerions has a population of 8,200
souls, aud a fishing population of pos
sibly 4,100. To supply the needs o
these 4,100 pole toters, the crawfish
farmer will supply the "bait” at the
rate of a penny each, thereby reaping
a snug sum.
The crawfish is a docile beast, and
with proper care increases rapidly. If
the demand reaches 5,000 crawfish per
day, the profits can easily bo figured
CORN COOKED IN THE FIELDS.
Blistering Weather is Hurting the
Crops Here.
Unless it rains within tho next fou
or tivo days, it is is Bald, the crops iu
some sections about Americus will he
very seriously injured. Such was the
opinion of well informed farmers in
the city yesterday morning,
Sunday's rain was good as far as it
went, but was not very general over tho
whole county.
And even where the rains fall the
cornfields are showing evidences of
drouth. The corn is in good roasting
oar stage now, aud dry weather would
hurt it materially,
Capt. John A. Gobb returned yes
terday from a trip throuch the Fif
teenth district, one of the best agri
cultural sections of Snmter county,
and says that both coru aud cotton
will suffer unless it rains within a very
few days.
In the meanwhile the drouth through
out the cotton belt continues, and in
consequence the prioe of the staple is
rapidly climbing higher.

Stabbed a Country Merchant Below
The Heart.
Meagre particulars reached the city
yesterday of a serious cutting affray at
a country store in tho Seventeenth dis
trict, wherein Mr. Jack Smith was
seriously stabbed by a negro.
Mr, Smith iB a farmer, and also con
duots a country store.
The negro charged with doing the
cutting was Oscar Wright, who is very
well known about Americus. His
reputation is not tho very best.
It is said that Wright became anger
ed about an account. All the details
of the affair are not known, bat it is
said that the trouble was caused by au
effort to collect the bill.
Mr. Smith received one loug cut be'
low the region of tho heart. The wonnd
is not necessarily a dangerous one.
Wright at once fled the scene.

Machinery Department Has Plenty of
Work.
While work in the car building de
partment of the Seaboard shops in
Americus is practically suspended,
the reverse is true as regards the ma
chinery department. Every man
there is needed, and more might be
employed, possibly, as sinco the strike
began a considerable amount of re
pair work bas accumnlated. This is
being cleared away, however, as last
as the force available can handle it.
Wounded Officer Still Continues to
Improve.
Again yesterday the physicians gave
out the gratifying information that
Officer Albritton was bolding his own,
and that evidences of improvement
wore still apparent. He had a verv
good day, and at a late hour last night
was resting as well as one in his con
dition could be expected.
