THE AMERICUS WEEKLY TIMES-RECORDER: FRIDAY, JULY 26. 1901.
HANDSOME PRICE IS DECLINED.
.For Store Property In Americus — No
Slump Here.
It :s reported that the owner of a
pieee of store property in Americus
recently declined a case offer of f S.OoO,
which is several thousand dollars
more, perhaps, than he paid for it as
an investment durine the “boom ’days
in Americus, when realty values were
inflated.
But there is no boom in Americas
now; no wild inflation.
But there is a stnong and steady de
mand for realty, and whenever a deal
is made the lisures evidence the fact
that property is worth more right now
than ever in the pant.
Is there one single vacant dwelling
house in Americas? Not one. There
can always be found a half dozen house
hunters, but the houses are not to be
had. Every dwelling built here with
in the past two years was rented long
before the shinglos went upon the
roof.
And a dozen could be rentod tomor
row if they were to be had.
Several pieces of property, both
store and residence, have changed
owners quite recently and always at an
advance over the prices paid one to
five years ago. That's not bad.
It is true, lamentably true, that
Americas' manufacturing interests are
not what they should be. If there
were other industries hero to afford
employment and bring people here the
value of realty would increase even
more, and other dwellings would be
erected.
With a thrifty population of N,200,
Americus can never go backward.
Hhe will continue to grow, and pres
ent prices of realty will soon rapidly
advance.

All Misdemeanor Cases Sent From
Superior Court Will Be Tried.
Many True Bills For Gambling and
Selling Whiskey.
The August session of the City Court
of Americus, convening shortly, will
probably be a lengthy one if even half
the cases nowappoaringjnpon the dock
et ore tried, Already the docket ap
pears to bo a fall one, and the end is
not in eight by a good deal.
Clerks Chambliss and Gatewood were
busy again yesterday issuing summons
for the horde of witnesses who will ap
pear.
Besides the large number of civil
cases originating in this oonrt, since
its establishment the first of the year,
a half hundred misdemeanor cases were
handed down from the superior court
recently.
Hence the full docket that will await
Judge C, R. Crisp.
Among the most "interesting” of the
big batch are the cases for gaming
and selling whiskey,
At the recent session of snpenor
court the grand jury indicted a seoro
of folks for gaming, and while some of
these hare “faced the mnsio” before
there are some of the gilded youtliB
who will explain tho mysteries of poker
for the first time—nit.
The gentleman who accommodating
ly sold a little booze on the quiet will
attempt to show the court that be
didn't do it,
While it is a fact that there has never
yet Ibeen a conviction hero in a case
tried for alleged violation of the local
option laws, tho record may be broken
when the city court mill griuds again.

White Man Turned Yellow.
Great consternation was felt by the
friends of M. A. Hogarty of Lexington,
Ky., when they saw ha was turning yel
low. His skin slowly cnauged color, also
his eyes, and ho suffered terribly. His
malady was Yellow Jaundlee. He nos
treated by the oest dootors, but without
benellt. Then he was advised to try
Eleotrio Bitters, the wonderful Stomach
and Liver remedy, and he writes: “After
taking two bottles 1 was wholly cured.”
A trial proves its matchless merit for
all Stomach, Liver aud Kidney troubles.

CROPS IN A BLAZE IN TEXAS.
Cotton and Corn Are Burning In the
Fields.
Georgia farmers are in clover as com
pared with those cl Texas, where, in
the cotton belt, there has been no rain
in three mouths. An Americas mer
chant received yesterday a letter from
his nephew there, who quite recently
has traveled from Vicksburg, Miss,
through all of central aud northern
Texas. He states that the corn crop is
literally burned up by drouth aud
will make nothing. The cotton crop is
the poorest ho ever saw in Texas, aud
he does not believe a half crop will be
made there. The weather is broiling
hot, he says, while the recent scorch
ing winds simply blistered all vegeta
tion. The sitnation there is truly
alarming.

And this earn will be largely in

obont Fort Valley and Marshallville,
ho was selling the balk of his crop
right here.
The first Elbertas nro now being

is the demand for peaohes that the

One Hundred Strong They Demand
Terms-
While Americns people have little
trouble on the score of servants, the
good housewives of a nearby town are
put to their wits end to get any help at
all. Nurses, housemaids, cooks and
washwomen to the number of a hun
dred have organized a society, the
president of which is a negro man who
gets a rakeoff, or percentage, for every
member employed. Without his sane
tion a member of the society will not
work in any household in the city,
auJ so dictatorial iB he that people are
sending into the country for servants
to do their plain housework,
Fruit Growers are Playing On the
Safe Side.
While Americus does not get a great
deal of “peach money” it is coming in
to the state now at the rate of about
850,000 per day aud its general distri
bution will add to the prosperity of
the peach state of the South.
Elbertas aud Georgia Belles are the
varieties now most in favor.
And for once, at least, the growers
are getting in on the ground floor by
receiving payment for their peaches
before they art shipped,
A gentleman from Fort Valley in
Americas yesterday says that such is
the demand for lino peaches that the
crop about Fort Valley and Marshall
ville is being largely sold right there
at the rate of it.35 per crate.
And the money comes first, in the
case of fire, os it were.
The price of 81.25 per crate of three
pecks is net, and the fruit grower
pockets his cash and goes home with
out fear of being wired for “freight
money" by the fellow np North.
He has sold bis peaches at a good
price and knows just exactly "where
he is at." Fruit growers like this
method of selling very well, and the
commission man takes all the chances
in shipping and selling the frnit.
Within a day or two Fort Valley and
Marshallville will ship together some
fifty carloads daily.

A FUNGUS GROWTH IN COTTON
Causes It to Wilt in The Lower Far
of State.
The farmers about Americus have
made but little complaint of “cotton
wilt,” but down in the lower part of
the state the weed is dying out from
the wilt. W. A. Orton, an assistant
pathologist from the Department of Ag-
riomtnre at Washington, is making in-
vestigation of the “wilt” about Valdos
to, and says the disease is caused by
fungns in the soil which clogs the
vessels in the stalk and causes the
plant to wilt. He says when the fan
gus once gete into the soil it will live
as long as cotton is planted upon that
soil.

Farmers Say Conditions Are Not So
Bad Now.
Farmers in AmericuB yesterday from
different portions of the country gave
a somewhat more cheerful opinion of
the crop prospect. Many of them have
entirely cleaned their cotton cf grass,
aud while the plant is small for the
season it is in healthy couditiou aud
will yield a fair crop. Some few farm
ers are still a little behind, hut favor
able seasons have put a majority of
them on the safe Bide.
Ice Cream Cost a Dime But Beer Was
Free
O. C. Montfort is a ginger-cake col
ored negro who has studied the iute
rior decorations of tho county jail on
several occasions ami is there agair
this time upon the usual charge of sel
ling liquor here.
Already similar charges had been
booked against him, and the trial is
still pending.
This time, it is said, Montfort tried
the unique plan of running a combin
ed tiger aud ice cream festival at his
villa, aud naturally the attendance was
immense.
The program, it is said, was to sell a
guest a plate of cream for 15 cents and
“fling in” free a glass of beer. Lem.
ouade also went at 15 cents a sing,
bit steep, probably, but for the faot
that it drew beer too.
But Chief Wheeler heard of Mont's
game and palled him.
Up at the city hall now is perhaps
ten or twenty gallons of bad whiskey
which the police fonnd on Montfort's
premises when he was nabbed the
last time on the old “tiger" charge.

FIVE CHILDREN ARE STRICKEN.
Scarlet Fever Strikes a Family Here
Hard Blow.
Scarlet fever made its appearance
over beyond Brooklyn Heights yester
day and in a neighborhood hitherto
free from the disease. City Physician
Hudson reported five little children
in the Livingston family over there ill
with fever, all the cases, seemingly,
developing within a day. The incident
is a rather remarkable one. The fever
is in light form fortunately.
If the predisposition to worms in
children is not cured they may become
emaciated, weakly and in danger of
convulsions. WHITE'S CREAM

Phenix, A. T., July 20.—A mining
case of exceedingly large proportions
was begun here when George Mitchell,
superintendent of LaCananea mines in
northern Sonora, began suit against
William Melozer of this city for $500,
000. Melozer is the main owner of La
Copete mine, also in northern Mexico.
Mitchell claims that he had an agree
ment with AJelozer, whereby he was to
receive 10 per cent of the stock of the
Copete nnue for exporting the property,
which he says he has not received.

What to a man who loves the air
Are trinkiets, guards, and jewels rare;
And what is wealth or fame to one
Who is a brother to the sun;
Who drinks the wine that morning spills
Upon the heaven-kissing hills,
And sees a ray of hope afar
In every glimmer of a star .
What to a man whose God is truth
Are spoils and strategems, forsooth—
Who looks beyond the doors of death
For loftier life, sublimer breath,
Who can forswear the state of kings
In knowledge of diviner things,
The dreams immortal that unroll
And burst to blossom in his soul?
