One of the most beautiful old bcmes
about Americas, a landmark of the
regime before the war, was sold yes
terday. The property was owned by
W. E. Morphey. a former citizen now
residing in Tuczon, Arizona, and is
better known, perhaps, as the old Dr.
Black place. It is a large mansion and
occupies a lino site on the o-e«t of
Brooklyn Heights. The purchaser is
Mr. S. H. Fuller, of Fredonia, Ala.
who will take up his residence in this
city. While upon a visit to his broth

Fuller admired the old place and on
yesterday closed the deal for it. The
purchase price was $1,000, though the
house cost originally f4,000 or 15,000,

Slaver of Slade in Americus, EnHoute
Home-
C. S. Allen, who six years ago killed
Paul Hill Slade upon the streets of
Dawson, was iD Americus yesterday,
en route from the state penitentiary
camp at Riehwood to Dawson, where he
goes a free citizen.
And he goes with the full sanction of
Gov. Candler.
For some time past Messrs. Yeomans
A Raines, of Dawson, attorneys for the
prisoner, have been working zealously
to secure his freedom.
This at last has been accomplished,
and yesterday morning the doors of the
prison at Riehwood in Dooly connty,
were thrown open and Allen again
breathed the air of freedom after a con-
finement of five years.
He was convicted in 1S'J5, and some
time thereafter sent to Riehwood. Tho
details of the murder of Slade are well
remembered.
Mr. Allen was accompanied here yes
terday by his faithful attorney, Mr. A.
M. Raines, who felt quite elated at his
success in getting his man out of the
pen where a jury had consigned nim
for life.
They will go to Dawson on the early
train this morning. ,
Once Splendid Hotel Is Now Tottering
In Decay.
It is truly a lamentablo fact that tho
Hotel Windsor, once the pride of
Americus, is going to wreck. It is
not known who owns this property,
but it is a fact that unless some re
pairs are put upon it it will soon be
uninhabitable. Americas can but re
gret that this splendid hostelry should
fall into decay for lack of management
and attention. It behooves those in
terested to lay aside all differences
and unite in the salvation of this mag
nificent edifice, ere it is too late. It
is only a question of time when It will
not be worth half the amount of the
mortgage now plastered upon it.

dozen wrooked bridges in Americus, a
large foroe was put to work upon it as
Boon ns the terrible storm subsided
and the wators receded. The old
bridge, washed irom its moorings,
was dismantled and eome of the tim

one. The ombankmonts leading to
the bridge have been rebnilt, and trav

for new bridges at Plam, McGa.rab,
Jackson and Lee streets, all of whioh
were Bwept away last week, and with

Cotton Crop In This Section is Being
Damaged.
The quality of mnch of the cotton
bronght to Americns yesterday show
ed the effect of the recent severe etorm
and cloudburst, whereby much cotton
was destroyed and even more was
damaged. To this resnlt is to be ad
ded the spell of bad weather now’ gen
eral over this section of the state. The
cotton crop here, in the opinion of
many who have given it carefnl study,
will be short in comparison with last
year’s crop, and a large portion of
what is made will be storm-damaged
Upon the whole the prospeot is none
too roseate.'
