Official Organ of Sumter County.

Georgia for the 3d Congressional.IDlstrlcb
AMERICUS, GA., OCT. 11, 1801.
It is said that the 6,500 negroes in
Indianapolis hold tho balanoe of power
and can elect a mayor if they unite on
one candidate.
Americns did mako a contribution
to tho Soldiors Homo fund. It was
small, it is true, bnt perhaps some
other towns did no more.
Tho rebuilding fund of tho Georgia
Soldiers Home has not yet reached
,5,000. It was hoped that $10,000
night thus be raised by subscription.
Sumter’s exhibit at tbo State Fair in
Savannah is going to ba an excellent
one. Our farmers are working together
to that end to mako a snccess of it.
Presidont P.oosevelt’s iirst impor
tant appointment in tho South is the
appointment of a Democrat to a Fed
eral Judgeship — ox-Gov. Jones, of
Alabama.
It is stated that the annual report of
Hon.O.B.Stevens, commissioner of ag
riculture of Geoigia, to be made to the
governor within the next few days, will
include a recommendation to establish
three additional experiment stations,
ouo in North Goorgia and one in East
Georgia. It is said that there is now a
cash surplus to the credit of the Agri-
cnlttirai department which can be used
for this purpose.
Mr. Stevens is evidently on the right
track and it is probable that the com
ing session of the general assembly will
taka favorable action on his recommen
dation along this line.
The farmers of Georgia have been
very greatly benefited by the experi
ments made at the one station above
Griffin, and this is particularly true of
the farmers of middle Georgia. Many
experiments which prove successful at
the Griffin station will not work in
other sections of the state, however, and
for this reason it would be well to have
several experiment stations located in
as many different sections.
The farmers of Georgia, as a rale, are
intelligent and appreciative and there
is no (juestion bnt that the establish
ment of experiment stations in the sev
eral sections of the state would be help-
fall to the farmers, who would be grate
ful for this service on the part of the
state.—Macon News,
If a business man becomes involved
in debt be cuts expenses until he re
trieves his lost fortune. Amoricus, for
once at least, must assume the attitude
of the business man involved.
The reunion of veterans state camp,
will take place at Macon, Oet. 23, 24
during the holding of the great streat
fair to be held in that city during the
week beginning Oct. 21.
The Goorgia state treasury had a
balance of $730,722 in it Oct. 1. The
Savannah Press thinks that now is tho
Yirne to build tho new depot in Atlanta
and to pay oil tho teachers.
A daily newspaper office is a male
strom ol activity. So many things have
to ba attended to at once that the won
der is the newspapers are as accurate
ns they aro.
Every woman in the country
ought to know about
Rioiiter’s Frlcad
Those who do know about it
wonder how they ever got along
without it. It has robbed child
birth of its terrors for many a
young wife. It has preserved her
girlish figure and saved her much
suffering. It is an external lini
ment and carries with it therefore,
absolutely no danger of upsetting
the system as drugs taken intern
ally are apt to do. It is to be
rubbed into the abdomen to soften
and strengthen the muscles which
are to bear the strain. This means
much less pain. It also prevents
morning sickness and all of the
other discomforts of pregnancy.
A druggist of Macon, Ga., says:
“ I have sold a large quantity of
Mother’s Friend and have never
known an instance where it has
failed to produce the good results
claimed for it.”
A prominent lady of Lam-
berton, Ark., writes: "With my
first six children 1 was in labor
from 24 to 30 hours. After using
Mother’s Friend, my seventh was
born in 4 hours.”

General Gordon Invited:.
Jacksonville, Fla., Oct. 4.—General
Manager G. P. Healey of tho Florida
state fair has sent an invitation on the
part of the state fair directors to Gen*
eral John 13. Gordon, asking him to
come to Jacksonville and deliver an ad
dress at the opening of the fair, Nov. 19.
The fair will bo formally opened bv
Governor Jennings and General Gordon.

Importation of tunuiiluii Cuttle.
Edinburgh, Oct. 9 —Replying to an
influential delegation, representing Scot
tish agricultural interests, the president
of the board of agriculture, Mr. Han-
bury, said that so long as he was presi
dent of the board he would .never con
pent to the removal of the restriction!
on the importation of Canadian cattle.
When Congressman Maddox called
on President Roosevelt in Washington
a day or two ago, he remarked that his
district (the seventh; lay between At
lanta and Chattanooga.
Is not Cobb county in the Seventh
district?,” asked the president. He was
told that it was.
‘Then you represent my district,"
said the president quite gleefully.
President Roosevelt then spoke of
his intention tq visit Roswell, the home
of his mother.
And when he does come it may be
set down with as mnch certainty as the
snn shines that the people of Cobb
connty and the Seventh congressional
district will make him glad he came.
What a jubilation and barbecue time
it will be!
What President Roosevelt said to
Judge Maddox about hie southern pol
icy was confidential, bnt this much can
be said: It will be favorable to this
section.
President Roosevelt has expressed
his purpose of being president of the
entire nation — and with his big back
bone he will doubtless succeed.
It is confidently predicted by those
who know him and who have seen him
that he will be the best friend the
south has ever had in the presidential
chair.—Rome Tribune.
New York, Oct.-1.—The directors of
the American Locomotive company
have authorized the expenditure of $1,*
250,000 to enlarge the capacity of sev
eral plants owned by the company. The
greater part of this money will^be ex
pended unou the Brooks and Sbenec-
tariv plants. A former appropriation of
$500,000 for the purpo,e was found in
adequate and occasional allowance was
agreed upon. The new allowance will
bring the plants up to a capacity of
about 2,000 locomotives a year.
llrltisb and Spanish Iron Trust.
New York, Oct. 1.—Says The Trib
une’s London correspondent: “Rhmor
comes from Cardiff that the near future
will witness a huge amalgamation of
British and Spanish iron and steel in
terests in order to do battle against the
encroachments of the American steel
trust on the European market. Inqui
ries made in London have, however,
failed to substantiate the existence of
such a project. ”
